  • * * "Good Morning Swindon!" the digital alarm clock/radio called out. "It's another beautiful summers day, and it looks to be this way all week! Today it's clear sky's and it's going to be 70 and sunny, so all you Furries better make sure you have plenty of water or shade because things are only just begining to heat up! In todays news-" SMASH! Chris's fist came down hard on the radio, which fell immeadiatly into a dead silence followed by what sounded like minor electrical discharges as the digital display faded into blackness. "Todays news?" Chris thought to himself "It's 7:30 in the morning, there hasn't been time for any news..." It was then that he realised his biggest problem, it was saturday. Cursing his stupidity Chris climbed out of bed and decided that as he was already up he may as well start his day. After showering, getting dressed and a rushed breakfast he realised that he didn't have anything to do. The bills were payed, the bins were empty, the cat was out. Deciding that he may as well do something today Chris pulled on his jacket and headed out of the door. There was an empty silence in the house, nothing whirred, nothing moved, just nothing, complete emptiness. Untill the back door opened and Chris hurled his jacket back into the utility room. It was 70 degrees outside, he didn't need a jacket. "Hi Chris" a girl and her tiger friend called out and waved from a passing car. Chris waved back and turned left on the path away from his house. Chris was well known in his street and the ones nearby, but of course around that neighbourhood everybody knew everybody. "Hi Mrs Kingsley" Chris said to one of his neighbours "Nice day isn't it?" "Oh, yes dear, it's in the shop" the elderly turtle replied with a kind smile and a wave. Chris continued down the path smiling back, God only knows what she thought he said. Chris continued out into town, greeting various passer's-by and occasionally pausing for a quick word or two with some of his closer friends. As he got to the field his bad mood had nearly vanished and he was content to stand and watch the baseball game. The feild nearly always had some type of game going on, humans and furries often played together. Chris paused for a while to see if any of the regular players were out. He recognised a few faces but baseball had never been one of his favourite sports so he continued on his way down the path. "LOOK OUT!!!" Chris barely had time to turn around before the baseball slammed into the side of his skull and sent him to the ground, unconcious. "Marcus! I told you to be more careful where you hit that thing!" "I didn't do it on purpose! Besides it was Jerry who knocked out that window last week..." "Sarah, didn't you put a spell on the ball?" "I didn't think I'd have too!" "Maybe we should call the hospital?" "Wait! He's coming around" Chris opened his eyes slowly and tried to focus on the various shapes and colours that were swimming before his eyes. "W-what hit me?" he asked still trying to get his vision back. "Hey buddy, you ok?" a large orange blur's voice sounded distant. "How many claws am I holding up?" Despite being in a considerable amount of pain, Chris managed to think of a response. "Which one of you wants to know?" Several voices laughed, but a second later Chris felt himself being pulled up by two pair's of strong arms. His vision returning he could make out several faces, a couple of humans, and various furries, a Wolf and a Dragon were supporting him. "I'm fine" Chris said taking his arms from around them "I just need an ice pack" he said rubbing the side of his head. "I don't think an ice pack's gonna do it, you got hit pretty hard" The Dragon spoke, glaring at one of her friends. "Here, let me have a look" Chris waited as he felt the Dragon place her hand gently on the side of his head, she muttered some incomprehensible spell and the waves of pain washing through his skull slowly dissapeared. Magic was surprisingly common place, those days, although it was mostly limited to certain species. Not being sure what you say to someone after being rendered unconcious by a baseball, Chris made some quick goodbyes and headed back along the path. Collapsing into bed that night Chris's only thoughts were of what he'd do tommorow... and possibly if he'd invest in some sort of helmet. The alarm didn't go off the next day, most likely because it had been pushed into a bin after having it's electical cord pulled out, so again Chris decided to make the most of a good day. Not much happened again, friendly neighbours waved and talked, cars went by and the world went round... Untill Chris got to the field again. The same gang from yesterday were playing what appeared to be an 8 aside game of tennis, with about 6 balls. Chris stood by and watched the mayhem for a few minutes, after realising that he couldn't tell who was winning, or if there were even any teams, Chris decided that he was hungry, and set off for a nearby resturant to see if he could get a bacon sandwich this late in the afternoon... But then... "Yo dude! Watch out!" Chris barely had time to register the blinding pain as the tennis ball bounced off the back of his skull, he fell down onto his knees before giving into the darkness pressing into his vision and blacked out. "Dammit Marcus! Not again!" "I can't belive we hit someone else" "We didn't" "What?" "I don't believe it! It's the same guy!" Chris rolled over slowly onto his back, registering some vaguely fammiliar blobs in his memory. "We gotta stop meeting like this" A large green blob spoke in a gentle voice. "This happens one more time and someones buying me dinner" Chris said sitting up and holding the back of his skull. "Great, it's a date" The same voice spoke again. Others laughed as Chris felt a claw press gently against the back of his skull, a few moments passed and the waves of pain dissapeared once again. Chris stood up and looked around as his vision returned. "I wasn't serious" Chris said jokingly, hoping that the speaker would identify themselves. "Awww... Thats too bad, because I was" Chris spun around as the Female Dragon who had twice mended his skull smiled at him. "So how about you take me out tonight?" she said writing something onto a tennis ball. "Pick me up around 8?" she looked at him, without a hint of a joke, handing the pen back to her friend. "Um... Well I-I..." all he could manage was a poor stammer. "Great, I'll see you tonight". The Dragoness said as she grabbed his left hand and placed the tennis ball into it, "See you tonight" she and her friends walked away leaving Chris stood there with the tennis ball. After taking a few minutes to comprehend what had just happened, Chris looked down at the tennis ball. On it was written: "2 Bremhill close Penhill Ask for Sarah" Chris walked down the street and read the ball several times, he failed to realise how he couldn't know this girl, considering she lived right next door to him. He wondered if it was a joke and that she had merely wrote down a random address. But then he realised that even though everybody knew everybody, he knew surprisingly little about his next door neighbours, they never seemed to be in. Chris walked back up the path to his house, glancing up at number two, and wondered if she really did live there...
