Halloween in Sandspur

I had been driving for over 5 hours. My destination was Sandspur, a place that has had a grisly murder streak that occurs every halloween. I,of course, being the 19 year old human that I am, found murder interesting. I wanted to BE there when the murders happened again. Biggest mistake of my life.

I reached the small town's border dog tired. I was greeted by a sign stating: "Welcome to Sandspur! You will never want to leave." I considered it one hell of a bad joke. It was 5 p.m. halloween day. Soon, ight would fall and the murders would begin. But I needed to find the motel first. I drove my old chevy down the olny road the town had, eyeing the old buildings around me until I stopped at the motel. Maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me, but I coulda swore that the vacancy sign lit up after the woman in the lobby saw me. Oh well. I was too tired to care. All I wanted to do was sleep through halloween night in that hell hole so I could go home and say that I lived through the murders. Christ, what was I thinking?

The woman smiled as I walked through the door. Her hair and eyes were a plain brown. Not much of a looker. But she did surprise me by handing me a key as soon as I reached the desk, smiling the whole time. "Don't I need to pay for this?" I asked, confused. She shook her head and replied: "You can pay me in the morning. The killing will start soon." I was dumbstruck at that point. Did she like the murders? Did she want to see them happen? Regardless, I grabbed the key, read the number, and went to room 1.

I opened the door and flopped on the dusty bed. But as soon as I did, I felt something hard under the covers. Curious, I pulled them aside and discovered a peice of paper and a large kitchen knife. I picked up the knife first and looked it over. Some kind of sick joke, maybe? Then I picked up the paper. What I read chilled my blood.

"At 8 p.m. sharp, the killing will begin. If you are reading this, then you must participate. Everyone will have a weapon at their disposal. Guest will recieve a complamentary knife and an extra hour to prepar before being hunted. In order to live in this game, you must kill at least one person. Anyone who refuses will die. This event ends at 6 a.m. sharp. If you kill someone, their weapon is yours to keep and use. Good luck, and happy halloween."

The paper slipped from my fingers. They couldn't be serious... could they? I was convinced that I badly needed sleep. Laying the knife on the night stand by the bed, I kicked off my shoes and slid under the covers. In moments I was out cold. Then all hell broke lose.

I heard a scream. I flailed as I shot out of bed, sure I was being murdered. But I wasn't. The clock by the door read 8:50. Seeing as there was no better time to test this joke, I headed out the door and towards the lobby. On the way, I passed a man in black who stopped me. He said, "You only have 10 minutes left to get ready, boy." Then he went on. For some reason, I really wanted my knife right then.

When I entered the lobby, I couldn't spot the woman. But then again, what did I expect? She would be asleep if she had any sense, right? So I turn and headed back to my room... until I saw red on the front desk. I froze. My heart raced and I struggled to breath. It couldn't be blood. It couldn't... But I had to make sure. I peeked over the edge... and ran back to my room at the fastest speed ever. What I had saw... Her blood all over the floor, her neck slashed open... No doubt she was dead.

I burst through my door and slammed it shut. I scrambled over to the night stand and grabbed my knife, my only means of protection. Whatever the woman had had, it did't protect her. What if someone had a gun? What would I do then? It didn't matter. All I had to do was get to my car and get the hell out of there. So, clutching the knife like it was the holy grail, I sprinted from the room, out through the lobby, and out to my car, entering it as fast as possible. Panting, I pressed the key into the ignition and turned it. Nothing. Panicing, I tryied again and again, but nothing was happening. They had ruined my truck so I couldn't leave. y phone didn't have any battery left, and I had no vehicle to drive. That left me only one choice. Kill or be killed. Holding the knife in the most stable way I could, I exited my car and started down the road. I didn't stand a ghost of a chance. They knew how to kill, I didn't. But I was sure I would not die alone...

***THE NEXT DAY***

Jessie stretched, shotgun laying at his feet. It had gotten plenty of use the previous night. Over half the town was dead, as was expected, but something new had happened that time. A new kid had played along. Jessie had personaly spotted the outsider dead outside the bar, a shard of glass wedged in his neck. A real pity that the kid hadn't survived. Jessie himself had killed 12 people. Many were people he really liked. But the rules were the rules. Not even demons live forever.

Jessie estimated that that year was the best yet, since a human got to play along. The human even killed three demons himself! Jessie sighed as he watched the police and press roll through. Another year, another batch of murder that the remaining townsfolk will refuse to help solve. Then its another long year until the fun begins again.
