The War

A single crack is heard across the open meadow and one guard falls. Men scatter for cover around their base as they try to locate the sniper. Humph... Foolish humans. Setting up a base so close to ours was careless. Ghost cycled another round into the rifles chamber and fired, dropping another guard. It's a mystery to me how they managed to suppress us for so long. Another shot rang out and the third guard fell. Ghost's white fur was hidden by the ghillie suit he wore made of spare cloth and leaves making sure none of his fur showed. His golden eyes were trained to spot things no other fur would see. Another shot and down went the fourth guard, this one a sergeant. Finally, one of the humans noticed his hiding spot and returned fire. Ghost simply shifted lower to the ground and fired getting another shot out dropping that particular human. So easy... Almost too easy... A whistling rang in his ear as artillery rounds fell down from overhead. Well... there goes my good mood... Ghost dashed from his hiding spot to escape the incoming shell's blast radius. He jumped behind a large pile of boulders and settled in between two of the larger ones. A nice vantage point actually... He could easily make out his surroundings which were mostly trees and the craters formed by the artillery shell's impact. Three... Two... One... Sure enough, a small patrol of humans slowly eased their way over the edge of the embankment. Ghost's ears twitched as he heard a subtle click as one of his claymores detonated, killing two of the humans in the immediate blast radius and injuring the other two. Their screams of pain went on while Ghost slowly and cautiously retreated from the area. I already got what I came for. He sealed a small pouch next to his hip that contained photographs of the base's layout and hourly patrol schedules. The rest was up to the main force. As he passed more trees and slowly crossed a small creek, he found himself on the edge of the rebel's base. Tents were mixed about here and there with more permanent structures like concrete bunkers and vehicle garage. He passed by one of the garage's main doors and headed straight for the center structure. He flicked his rifle's safety on as he passed more and more anthros cleaning their weapons. Tents went by until he arrived at a larger one with a hole cut out for a doorway. He walked in to see a bear and a black wolf conversing over a map of the area. He waited silently until they noticed him.

The bear turned,"Ghost. Good to see you made it back alive."

"I'm glad to be back Colonel. I was getting lonely out there." Ghost replied saluting the bear as the wolf turned.

"The major here was just explaining his plan of attack. Do you have them?" The colonel held out his paw as Ghost opened up the small pouch at his hip and retrieved the tiny card within and handed it over.

Ghost remembered what he had heard about him. He started out in the human's army at the beginning of the war but later left due to some unknown cause. His full name was Mark Anthony Theodore.

Most just called him Colonel "Mat" for short. He didn't mind either. His large build looked like it intimidated many young recruits to get focused on what had to be done.

"Glad to see you made it, brother." The black wolf smiled.

"I wouldn't miss it." Ghost looked at the black wolf. His brother Shadow, stood a head taller than him, black fur and glowing red eyes. Shadow always smiled for some reason. Don't know why, he just did.

Mat slipped the card into a slot on the table and a projector laid out red dots for enemy troops and red triangles for vehicles on the map. And there were a hell of a lot of red dots on the map.

"Damn... That's gotta be the biggest force we've seen since Octavus Delta. We might need air support for those artillery units in back." The bear circled them with a big paw,"and those tanks will be a problem too."

"Colonel the only problem is the amount of triple-a around the base." The map highlighted a whole nest of blue dots in the base and around it.

"Damn. We may need to send a squad in to take out some of the armor then." Shadow sighed when he thought about the whole thing. Mat did about the same when he saw all the patrols that moved around the base.

"Alright. Ghost, I need you to take a squad in and clear some of the armor so we can mount an assault at dawn." Mat kept looking down at the map and hoped that all of it would just disappear and he wouldn't have to be the one calling the shots.

"I'll start right now. Shadow?" Ghost turned to his brother.

"You can always count me in." Shadow punched his brother in the arm lightly.

"Alright then. Get to it." When the Colonel finished, Ghost and Shadow left his tent in search for a few more members to add to their squad.
