My ears did a quick little back-flip as I read through the message again on the small screen.

Hi Rory can I

call u tnight

around 4.30?

Important

business about

date. seeyou

Victor

Oh crap...

The possibilities were all too numerous and not all so pleasant. I mean, look at it, this could just be a very excited Victor wanting spill the secret about his extremely mysterious date plans, and to inflict me with that same ultra-special expectation he'd been going through all day, that of holding a secret and so much wanting to tell all about it. The idea of Victor floating in a happy hazy throughout his work day made me smile, of course it did, but any attempts to actually put that smile on my face were postponed by the reality of the other side of my overactive mind, the one that spoke loud and clear. Yeah...

WELL IT WAS VICTOR HE TOLD ME THAT HE'S GOING TO MEET YOU THIS THURSDAY AND I TOLD HIM THAT NO THAT'S WHEN WE ARE GOING TO THE AMUSEMENT PARK I LOVE THOSE CAROUSELS AND ROLLER COASTERS AND COTTON CANDY DO YOU LIKE COTTON CANDY RORY ITS SO GREAT IM GONNA BUY YOU SOME AND THEN WE CAN GO TO THE RAINBOW TEA CUP CAROUSEL WOW YOU AND VICTOR CAN SIT THERE PAW TO PAW AND I'M SITTING NEXT TO YOU BECAUSE HAVE TO KEEP YOU SAFE FROM ALL THE HOMOPHOBES IN THE RAINBOW CAROUSEL.

It seemed all too probable that Victor would only have bad news to give for me. His brother would probably not buy any excuses Victor could come up with to slip out of their home for a while, and the truth was bound to attract even further Cobb Holden attention to my poor golden butt, and that would destroy any chances of me actually maybe making friends with Victor's very fun butt again. Then again, maybe it was just me who was a man-nympho and couldn't think anything except hot anal sex with Victor Holden when I should have been thinking about holding paws and talking about things that weren't important but a smile to our faces, and then we'd go to the tea cup carousel and hold paws and ask Cobb to be the fairy godfather of our adopted children.

What'd a couple of more days be, anyway? It was Tuesday...that meant it'd only be...twelve more days until Cobb presumably left town again, leaving Victor quite free to go on living merrily along without having to cater to a loud-mawed brother all too keen on making his brother's life a misery even if he really didn't seem to mean it. Perhaps this was my old obsession coming back, slowly, stopping me from thinking about anything except Victor Holden, the Dobie I barely knew, except in the sexual sense - and only limitedly even there, I assure you, because there was still one Gayma Sutra's worth of things in my back pocket I was itching to try out with my new favorite Dobie.

"Bad news? Good news?"

My ears jumped as I realized that I was being spoken at, and I met the eyes of Mason, standing nearby with one of those heavy cardboard boxes held in his paws, watching me curiously. I smiled back to him and let my tail make a sufficiently flippant gesture.

"It was just a friend of mine asking if I had the time to talk on the phone later on," I replied to the wolf.

"That's cool," Mason's tail swished from side to side as he walked past me to put the box up to the shelf.

I waited for him to go back to the pile of book boxes before I flipped my phone around again and typed in a response to Victor.

Hi Victor!

Sure I can talk

with you then

hope all's okay

with you

Rory

I sent the message out into cyberspace and put my phone back into my pocket, feeling both even more curious about the date and just a little bit less hopeful about it actually coming to be, as I moved in to help Mason with the boxes.

We didn't talk more about the prospect of our man-date, sticking to some idle chit-chat instead, before we headed back up to the shop floor and jammed ourselves behind the counter again to join Marge who was just finishing up serving some coyote dude buying a whole stack of what looked suspiciously like Caledon Rocks paperbacks to me.

"Hope you come again soon!" Marge beamed at the young fellow as she handed over the red carrier bag bulging with the merchandise.

"Thanks, man!" the obviously college-bound coyote grinned, flicked his ears as a way of greeting, and made his tail-wagging way out of the bookstore, poorer in the wallet, more rich in the heart, now filled with heroic deeds written by that Colin Wishbellow fellow.

Marge's scowl only appeared after the coyote was out of sight, and her tail smacked against the counter behind us as she snuffled.

"Man?" the boobylicious cougar tugged on the hem of her duty shirt to make them bounce naturally.

"Did he just call you dude, Marge?" Mason's brow knit as he stared at the cougar.

I had to bite down my jaws a little so as not to smile too broadly as I leaned against my section of the counter.

"I think he did," I remarked.

Marge ruffled the back of her neck and snuffled.

"Kids these days, what's happening to the spoken language?" she complained.

"Hey, Marge!" ohhh...this was too good. "He didn't look any older than our Mason here, who're you calling a kid?"

The frat wolf's ears flicked rapidly as he suddenly became the center of the attention, if briefly, as Marge gave him a glance, before she turned to look at me and smacked me with her tail, over my hip.

"But Mason is a kid," Marge smirked.

"Hey!" the wolf grumbled.

"Though I'm still not quite old enough to be your mother, which kind of saves you yet," the cougar's grin widened at equal rate to how Mason's ears dropped.

"Ha, ha," Mason snuffled.

"Sorry, Marge, guess it's just how it is today...the language degenerating because of Facebook and texts and Twitter...instead of saying ma'am, he could only say...man."

"You bastard," Marge hissed and treated me to a curved tail smack right over my ass. "I'm not old enough to be ma'am!"

"Not yet," Mason noted from the other side.

"Gotcha" I added.

"Oh, fffffff..."

This was turning out to be an interesting afternoon at the Albrecht Brothers.

The time did finally fly past, ever so slowly, in the wonderful world of book retail, until it was four pm and Crystal was coming in on duty for the evening shift, letting me off to my well-earned freedom! I quickly switched over to my street clothes in the locker room and checked my phone for the time. 4:10...still a little bit time left before Victor's promised phone call.

I hadn't heard about him since that text, so I was more than eager to get to know what he had to tell me. I bid my goodbyes to Marge and Mason and Crystal and headed out to the bus stop to catch the next one back home. The ride was uneventful and without a Victor-call, and as I stepped out of the sliding doors and off the curb, my phone told me that it was 4:25 now...still a little bit more left before the theoretical Victor contact. My grumbling belly reminded me that my fridge was pretty much empty now, so I decided to walk the one hundred yards or so to the nearby supermarket to fill out my stores, so to speak.

I grabbed a shopping cart from the huge stack by the doors and made my jaunty way into the busy supermarket. My first stop was at the bread section, and I chose some nice rolls and some toast into my cart. The shelf on the opposite side held an assortment of cakes and pies and pastries, and those plastic-wrapped treats were beckoning for me to have a little bite of cream and strawberry-filled Swiss rolls or chocolate muffins or doughnuts...damn...cravings...

My tail almost wound itself into a knot as I tried to resist the temptation of loading my cart with all sorts of sweet things and pigging myself out for good at home while doing something extremely productive like watching the television. I should be going out to the gym, rather, and then have a nice shower and a nice pawing off and I'd be shower fresh and happily purring and shiny-furred and just fantastic. I'd probably end up lying on the couch in some sort of a sugar coma watching American Idol reruns or something similarly great on the television, naked, of course and fondling my balls.

I determinedly pushed along the aisle and passed the all too delicious-looking cakes, and picked some salt crackers instead, and felt proud of myself.

The wall clock told me that it was 4:35 pm and there was still no sign of Victor.

I rounded the corner and found myself from the dairy section, facing another painstaking choice of skimmed, fully-skimmed, soya milk, lactose free, organic or UHT, and that was just the different kinds of milk, not to mention the cheeses, yoghurts and whatnot. At least I knew what I was after, and picked up the gallon of white stuff I preferred and simply walked on.

My phone began to vibrate by the time I reached the frozen meals shelf.

"Hi!" I must've sounded almost too eager as I flipped the phone to my ear and beamed at the unseen recipient of my super-fantastic HI!!!!!!!

"Hi, Rory!" the familiar rumble greeted me from the other end of the imaginary line.

"Hi, Victor," I replied, feeling the need to speak his name aloud.

"How're you doing, Rory?"

I was smiling as I piled some sliced chicken into my cart from the freezer, my tail looping happily behind me as I went along the wonderful road of shopping.

"Well I'm okay, I got out of work and am getting some food, I'm all out, hah."

I must've been a shining light in the darkness of unsophisticated chatter.

"Don't remind me, seems like I have to shop every day now, Cobb's eating like the proverbial horse," Victor didn't exactly sound very happy.

"Oh?" I knew this wasn't a healthy curiosity, but I pressed on.

"Well he does contribute to the costs by stuffing bills into my wallet but he lets me do all the actual shopping," Victor rumbled.

I tried not to chuckle, but the idea of the big Dobie pushing a comically small shopping cart just like mine, making his oversized way along the aisles was certainly a fun thing to behold in the mind's eye.

"That's a bit...ugh," I replied empathically.

"Well yeah, but at least he insists on cooking dinner every night," Victor chuckled. "Could be worse, that."

"How have you been?" I asked, loading fruit into a plastic bag one-pawedly while my other paw kept the phone at its proper place over my ear.

There was a small break before Victor spoke again.

"Just going to work these past two days, and spending time with Cobb," he replied. "He's been his usual fine self, now that he's not drinking coffee."

I allowed myself a little chuckle, just a small one.

"Any less hyperactive?" I asked.

"Much, although he still went out yesterday when I was working and bought another load of presents for me."

I decided that it was okay to chuckle again, so I did.

"What was it this time? More booze and chocolate?"

The silence that followed wasn't too reassuring, before Victor spoke up again.

"Some lactose-free chocolates, yes, in case...someone...might be visiting and feeling like eating chocolates," he replied.

I didn't really feel like laughing at that, although the message was all too clear.

"Now that's very thoughtful of him," I tried.

"Yeah," Victor rumbled. "Almost a bit too thoughtful, but that's Cobb. He doesn't mean anything bad with it, honestly, I hope you know that."

"Could be much worse eh?" I mused, dividing my attention between Victor and the cucumbers on the shelf.

"Yeah, it could," Victor sounded like he was smiling, too. "But he's a pawful, but it's fine...just a few more days, hah."

"Yeah," I hoped that sounded sympathetic enough.

"Yeah, hah, but that's me!" Victor chuckled now, sounding much more cheerful. "Working and brother-watching, nothing much. And...uh...thanks for the texts, too, by the way...well...heh."

The front of my pants was thankfully hidden against the shopping cart as I remembered just how fun those messages had been.

"Well I certainly didn't mind some texts, heheh," I hoped that the laugh sounded dirty enough, although being in public, I really couldn't do so much with it.

"Yeah, hah, I did...well, enjoy them a lot, heheh."

Damn pants front, and damn Victor Holden.

"Yeah, well...so did I," I made my pick and added a suitably suggestive cucumber into my cart.

"Now isn't that just...interesting," Victor's voice had a really sexy twang to it when it went just a little bit lower, and he had that little pause there to make it sound just a little...hahah.

Victor sure did how to talk to a sexually frustrated lions.

"Well it is," I replied, hoping it sounded at least just a little bit fun, too.

"Yeah...so...how are you doing, Rory?"

"I'm okay," I smiled to myself as I spoke. "Work, boring nights, work..."

"Well I could help with that a bit, you know...if you're still free on Thursday."

My tail made a happy flip as the date was mentioned, and Victor didn't sound any sullen about it, either!

"Well of course I am!" I declared cheerfully, causing some badger lady to look at me as I exclaimed into my phone right there in front of the diaper and baby product shelf.

"Heh, great, good to hear," Victor said, "so...you wanna hear what I was thinking?"

"Sure!" I could barely hold it back now as I waited eagerly.

"Well...I was wondering...if you'd feel like it, I've got my hockey practice this Thursday at six, and...I was wondering if you would like to come and watch my game and then we could maybe go out a bit and...see what happens?"

Ohhhh.....!!!!!!

"Ohhhhh..." I said, smiling broadly, toothily.

"Yeah, I mean..." he sounded almost shy, and that was so cute. "Just thought you might wanna see how I do on the ice..."

I was already imagining the bulky Victor sliding down the ice like a pro, chasing the puck over to a satisfying GOAL!!!

"Yeah, sure, sounds great!" damn fetish fuel Victor. "Really fun, too."

"Heh, well...that's great!" Victor spoke, sounding almost relieved now that I hadn't torpedoed his very personal idea. "I think we could go and catch something to eat afterwards, maybe, or whatever we can come up with."

Now that sounded so very promising...except for...

"And...Victor...what about Cobb?" I knew I had to ask.

"I told him that you're not allowed to have extra furs there, fire safety regulations," Victor said, deadpan. "He bought it ."

I chuckled deeply at the outrageous excuse he had come up with, my tail flicking ever so rapidly.

"You serious?"

"Yeah, he bought it, and told that he's going to have a quiet night at home."

"Wow..."

"That's what I was thinking, too."

"Hahah."

"So...uhh...do you know where the Hoffman Winter Sports Indoors Pavilion is?"

"Sure I do, I go past it every day on the bus when coming to work," I replied, and had to catch my phone from falling down off my ear as I was struggling to juggle between the phone and the bottles of mineral water I was trying to load into my cart.

"Great!" Victor sounded like he was smiling. "Could you be there around five thirty, maybe?"

Hmmm...hahahah...

"Of course, that's more than enough time to get back from work and change and be there, yeah, sure!" I was already beaming, and it wasn't just because I had packed three chocolate bars into my cart for future binge consumption.

"Don't want you to be in hurry or anything, so if it's okay...great!"

"Yeah, it's perfect," I smiled happily at the prospect of such an interesting and Victorian date.

"Heheh, Thursday it is then!" Victor sounded fantastically happy and excited, and I could hardly blame him.

"Yay for Thursday!" I was already purring a little at the prospect of a real and good Cobb-free Victor time ahead of me.

"I hope it'll be fun for you, it's going to be a good game, too, so it ought to be exciting, I think!"

I was almost shy when I spoke again.

"Well...as long as I get to watch you play..."

"Heheh," Victor sounded a bit low-voiced again, and that was...nice.

"Really looking forward to it, too," I enthused happily.

"It's good to get to unwind after...all this, eh?"

"Tell me about it," I snuffled, all too aware of the hardships involved in boring work and adding up to that some troublesome family members as well.

"Well, hopefully it'll be a great opportunity for you as well," Victor sounded like he was smiling again, and I was smiling too.

"I've a feeling it will be, yes," I grinned to myself.
