It has been thousands of years, but the battle between human and non-human still rages on. The Keidran put up a tough fight but were ultimately crushed by the human forces. The Basitin people were lulled into a false sense of security when they signed a treaty with the humans, but the peace didn't last. The humans for reasons unknown to the Basitins landed on their shores and staged an all out attack. Their attack was instantly annihilated by the Basitin's superior skills in the art of war. However the Basitins saw this attack so heinous that the eastern and western people joined forces to fight against the human threat and brought the fight to them.

The year is now 2255, and the war has not gotten any better as the technology is advanced. With the invention of firearms in 1950, things got much, much worse. The two sides took their weapons technology in two different directions. The Basitins made the most effective and efficient killing machines, where as the humans incorporated their ability to use magic into their firearms. Whether it is enchanting bullets or directing a large amount of energy into a high-explosive charge, they've done it all. One thing the humans didn't take into account somewhere along the line is the Basitin's resistance to most if not all toxins. Huge chunks of countryside are now entirely uninhabitable thanks to toxic gas. From then on the humans were known for their standard issue gas masks.

This story centers around a young Sergeant in the Basitin military, or at least he was before being accused of treason and espionage. He was sentenced to death, but the night before his execution, a guard that knew he didn't do it let him escape. So now he is hated by humanity for what he is, and wanted dead by his own people for what he supposedly did. He now wanders the battle ravaged wastelands disguised in pieces of human uniforms helping his people where he can.

Chapter 1

It's an odd sight, this. What seems to be a lone human solder walking through the woods, upon closer inspection, however, one would find that this person has long ears and a tail. Seth knew his disguise wasn't perfect, but it is the best he can do short of amputation. Walking for days on end gives the 19 year old Basitin a lot of time to think, but today is not one of those days. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of begging and pleading. Seth decided he better investigate, but carefully. One slip up out here on his own and he is dead. As he was nearing the crest of the hill, he heard a gunshot. He instinctively hit the deck, but when there was no one in sight, he carefully pocked his head over the top. What Seth saw shocked and angered him. Three Keidrans in a clearing, two on their knees, hands tied and one face down in the dirt with a hole in his head. There were two humans, one with a rifle just watching as the other, who was armed with only a pistol and moved to the next Keidran.

Seth had to act fast. He swung his rifle over his shoulder, took aim, and put a round in the executioner's head in just a few seconds. However, he was almost immediately under heavy fire from the second human. Seth did a quick roll to the left and started sliding down the hill shooting as he went. The human finally stopped shooting when he caught a bullet in the leg and collapsed. Seth walked over to the human and saw that he was bleed profusely; Seth guessed he had hit the man's femoral artery. When the man saw Seth approaching all he had to say was, "You dirty animal mother fu-" and was interrupted by a shot to the head. Seth ran over and cut the other two Keidrans loss. The one in the middle collapsed onto the fallen one next to her and started sobbing uncontrollably. The other Keidran put his hand on Seth's shoulder. "I don't know who you are or why you risked you life to save us, but thank you." He then turned to the female, "We need to go and warn the others." The female Keidran slowly got up and together the two disappeared into the woods.

After they were gone, Seth rummaged through the two humans packs and took anything useful, mostly food. His scavenge was cut short when he heard people approaching from behind. He quickly took a few strides into the woods and leapt into a tree. He was far enough in that he could see them, but they couldn't see him. It appeared to be a squad of humans, which would have made the two men he just killed the scouts. For the first time since he had escaped, he was thankful for his big ears. He managed to pick up small parts of what they were saying. Things like, "Reckless idiots" and, "What were they thinking... should have known better" and the best one, "Whoever did it saved me the trouble." 'I guess they won't be missed' Seth thought to himself. He waited for the humans to depart before quietly jumping from the tree and putting some major distance between him and that clearing.

After night fell, Seth set up a small camp. It wasn't a camp, just a fire really. Night time is when the depression usually set in for him. All he could think about at night was how no one accepted him. Wanted dead by his own people for something he didn't do... Seth knew he had been framed, but he couldn't prove it, or even defend himself. The night he had supposedly committed treason; he was drugged and passed out in his tent. Of course no one could account for that and he even missed his shift for guard duty. On top of everything, a private went missing and they stuck him with that as well. When he walked out of his tent he was immediately arrested.

Seth wasn't like most of the men in the United Basitin Military. Most of them just wanted to go to war, where as Seth wanted to solve the overall problem. The military seemed like the only way he could attempt to accomplish this, plus it is mandatory for all male Basitins to enlist so he didn't have a choice anyways.

To try and take his mind off of all that, Seth disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled his rifle. He knew that rifle so well he could do it blindfolded. He then took off his pack and assessed how he was doing on supplies. He acquired a week's worth of MREs from the humans, which is good; he was starting to get tired of nuts and berries all the time. He removed the clip from his rifle to refill it. He was down to his last box of ammo for it. "Damn, I'm going to have to get my hands on a human rifle soon." He mentally scolded himself for not taking the one off the human earlier. After letting out a large yawn, Seth decided it was time to hit the hay. He extinguished the fire and climbed high up into the tree to that he wouldn't be noticed if a scouting party from either side were to wander through the area.
