#1 of My Summer Vacation Diary

Chapter 2 already! it's only been, what? two, three weeks? I forget. I'll probably bee one more chapter before things really get interesting, but Please hang on, It will get there, I promise!

hello again, I suppose I should use today to finish off that cliff hanger that I ended on yesterday. See, I was going to write more, but I got interrupted by... well, never mind. I'll get to that soon enough.

The sun rose far too early the day after my run in with those... whatever they were... in the woods. I cautiously sat up, breathing out a deep sigh as all the blood rushed out of my head. The sun rose right outside my window during these early spring days. The blinding light woke me up every morning, even with the blinds down! I stumbled my way to the kitchen while running my hand along the smooth, uneven texture of the log wall. Years of summer vacations spent in this cabin allowed me to make the trip from memory with my eyes still closed.

Not until I had a mug of coffee in my hand and the smell of pancakes on the griddle in my nose did the fog of sleep leave me. When the time came I flipped the 'cakes onto a plate and carried them over to my laptop to eat. While I was busy stuffing my face, I also pulled up Sofurry.com, and checked my profile. As usual, there weren't any of those wonderful little red icons at the top of the page, so I flipped over to my watch list. "maybe I will be lucky and there's a new 'Underground' update." I mused while the page loaded.

The internet was painfully slow out here in the middle of nowhere. We were limited to Dial-up. Even the best package was only a few Kb a second, and that was on a good day! While waiting, I walked over to the kitchen sink, finished cleaning up breakfast and inspected the small garden outside through the window. Mom and Dad never planted much, and this time of year it was still just bare dirt. but just as I was turning away, something caught my eye, a flash of movement over at the property line.

My mind focused immediately on the events of last night. "Could it be?..." I thought out loud. then A rabbit sprang out of the weeds. "figures," I mumbled, just about to turn away. Then, dashing out of cover was one of the furries from last night! It's dull gray fur a harsh contrast to the vibrant morning colors around it. I watched in awe as the creature sprinted across the yard in pursuit of the hare. But it was a doomed venture from the start. Not fifteen feet after it hopped from the bushes, the fluffy tailed meal-to-be dove out of sight into a hole, followed less than a second later by a slender, silver arm. It was too late, the rabbit was gone.

The mysterious furry pulled itself up to it's knees and sat for a minute, head down, shoulders hunched in defeat. as much As I was glad that the little guy would live to see another day, I couldn't help but feel sorry for that cat-like animal. While it slowly stood up and wandered around the yard, I made my way to the fridge. "I'm sure there's something I can give it.

One thought kept running through my mind while I was digging through the fridge. "It is a furry, An honest to God furry!" I wasn't sure if I should be happy, or afraid. Then, my eyes lit on some leftover pizza. "It ought to like that," I thought out loud. I carefully reached out through the front door and set the offering out on the porch. Then I set up camp right by the window, waiting to get a closer look at the unusual creature. Even without much wind, it didn't take long for the smell of pizza to find it's way to the dejected animal's nose.

I hardly even dared to move as it cautiously climbed the step onto the small front porch. It stopped just shy of the plate and studded it for a second, glancing up at the door and then right at me through the window. I was shocked at the expression of concentration in his eyes. For a second we stood there, mutually examining each other through the glass. He wasn't really gray. He was just covered in some kind of dust, there were actually quite a few places where his fur had been rubbed clean, revealing a jet black coat beneath.

He had surprisingly human-like body language, standing on two feet and using his forepaws (really more like hands than paws) to lift and examine a slice of the pizza, he even seemed quite dexterous. It was well hidden in his belly fur, but I also noted what seemed like a sheath between his legs. So he was definitely male. I wasn't sure what animal he most resembled. It was mostly cat like a guess he had small triangle shaped ears protruding from the crown of his head and a short but well defined muzzle. However, the facial structure wasn't really close to any specific species. Eventually he had enough of me, and with what looked strangely like a bow, he picked up the remaining pizza and trotted gracefully back towards the woods.

I watched him until he disappeared. Still unsure of what to make of this latest encounter, I couldn't help but get chills recalling that look in his eyes. There was more than just an animal behind that gaze.

As the day progressed, I Couldn't help but think that he was still watching me. That look of desperation he had still haunted me while I cleaned and readied the house for another summer vacation. I knew it was probably my imagination, but I was sure If I turned quick enough I would catch a glimpse of dusty gray fur.

I didn't let it get the best of me though, there was plenty of work to do, and I did my best to stay busy. After all, I only had a few days left before the rest of my family got here. In-fact, normally I wouldn't even be here yet, but Wisconsin Schools let out earlier than NIU where my brother was going. So rather than go home for a week, I just came to the cabin early to get some peace and quiet. That day, however, I Was going fishing!
