Chapter 3

"Men or Monsters"

Their feet slammed into the concrete as they took off down the sidewalk with both goons behind them, it wasn't anything new to them though but he did have a knife.

"Alright, lets split up, you take his partner I'll take care of Josh." Daren suggested as they came to a curve.

"Right."

Just as planned both separated, Daren ran into a nearby alleyway as Jerel turned the corn with the partner on his tail.

"Nowhere to run Daren, ready for a ass kicking?"

"The question is are you, come on Josh it doesn't have to be this way. You do know that if you kill me you will be thrown in jail, you are over eighteen after all."

"That's true."

He was really giving up? Daren lowered his guard as he saw him turn around, but then he turned back meeting his eyes.

'But it's a small price to pay for all the shit you've put me through!"

With one swift swing of his hand the knife left his palm. He quickly tried to dodge, but the blade was to fast and before he knew it the blade penetrated his chest.

"Sorry kid, no hard feelings."

Julie didn't want to sit around, instead she had followed Josh but when she took a peak around the corner she almost let out a scream. Before she could get caught she laid her back flat against the wall.

As he turned to leave he felt something wrap around his ankle. He looked down as he saw Daren's grip tighten around it.

"Human weapons, what toys."

He stumbled back as he saw his enemy rising from the ground. He watched as he pulled the blade from his chest. His tongue slipped out ad ran along the blood covered blade.

"Hmmmm, monster blood doesn't taste as good as human blood I'm afraid."

Julie's eyes went wide when she looked around the corner. What was he? His eyes were no longer blue but bright ruby red, his two canines were sharpened to a point, and his fingernails were claws.

"What the hell man! Your suppose to be dead!"

He was frozen in place as the beast walked towards him. His hands shook as Daren gripped him by his collar. Julie didn't want to watch but something was keeping her their. She watched as he let out a loud roar, but what she expected to happen didn't, instead he dropped the petrified man and breathed in.

"Whew, that was real close."

She still couldn't move as she watched as his eyes turned back to their normal blue shade and his canines changed back also along with his claws. The only thing that got her to move Jerel was running back around the corner.

"Well that was more or less satisfying." he said as he looked down at Josh.

"Wait a sec, I smell something.'

He sniffed the air around them before exhaling.

"Human blood, I can smell it."

"Well there is a human, more or less, petrified in front of you."

"No, it's sweeter, much sweeter." he said as he quickly looked around the corner of the alley, but no one was there.

The next day was just like any other day, hot and sticky. Through the night Julie couldn't forget what she had seen, those blazing red eyes, the sharp pointy fangs, and that beastly roar. Maybe it was all just a dream she tried to convince herself, but try as she might she still couldn't get it out of her head. As she walked towards her first hour class she felt someone grab her shoulder. Whoever it was spun her around until she was facing him.

"Hey, hope your feeling better today."

"Of course, why wouldn't I be?" she said nervously.

She couldn't help her hands shaking as she gripped her bag tighter.

"You sure? You look as pale as a vampire."

"Vampire, right." she replied in a shaky voice.

Before he could speak again his cell phone started vibrating in his pocket.

"Excuse me for one moment.'

Even though she knew it was right to attend class her curiosity got the better of her so she followed quietly behind him until he came to a halt at the end of the hallway.

"Yes, now? He's here now? Alright, get the chemical ready." he said as he closed his phone, instantly the locker opened.

She watched as something scanned his eyes. She waited until he entered the locker before following him further, luckily for her he hadn't shut the locker all the way. Inside was a small staircase that led to a wooden door. Voices came from the room as she looked through the glass in the door. The room was filled with boxes and to her right were three computers each broadcasting a different area of the town and at the center computer, it looked like Salena. Was she part of the group? She had to be if she was working with the computers they used.

"Remember, you have one hour before the chemical wears off and everyone wakes up. Get out their, kill the bastard, and get back."

Her eyes turned to the two people she was talking two, one of which was Daren and other was Jerel.

"No worries sis, you know us, we got this." Daren said as he spun a canteen on his index finger.

"Yeah, that's what you said last time."

He gave her a smirk before unscrewing the metal jug, he quickly drank the liquid inside. She watched carefully as a drop of red ran down his chin. Just as before his eyes turned red, his fangs came to a point, and his fingernails turned unto claws, but his hair also turned pearl white and with a poof both he and Jerel vanished in a cloud of smoke. Monsters, he was a living, breathing monster. Her eyes were wide open as she leaned against the door trying to figure out what had just happened, that was until the door opened causing her to fall backwards.

"Julie? How did you get in here?"

The soft voice sounded familiar as she was lifted up from the ground. It must have been Salena's voice.

"I-I came through the locker."

"Ugh, he can never close doors all the way. I know you must have lots of questions but I assure we are don't mean you any harm."

She tried regaining her breathe control before speaking back to her.

"What are you guys, some kind of freaks?"

She suddenly wanted to take the work "freaks" back before it made Salena mad.

"You don't have to worry, we have been called freaks before even in our human forms. As to what me and Daren are we go by many names, bloodsuckers, flying demons, but the most common term used is probably vampire."

Great, now she was involved in the vampire games.

"What are you doing here? Do you want to drink our blood?"

All she could do was laugh at the question.

"Of course not, trust me if we wanted to Daren or I would have already. Humans depict us as evil creatures, spawn of Satan himself, but they are wrong. True we use to be bloodsucking lunatics but after our race was almost completely wiped out the last three brothers went into hiding, hoping to live in peace."

Before their conversation could continue something roared from the screen.

"Woe, big daddy."

Julie got closer as she tried looking at the screen.

"Julie, your about to find out what we do here."
