The Legend of Serafi

A long time ago, so long ago that mountains have been born and died from old age since then, a filly was born into the Great Herd. She was as beautiful and adorable as any newborn foal, but what set her apart was her eyes. Deep and soulful, she had eyes the likes of which no one had seen before.

No one could refuse her when they gazed into her eyes, and no one could resist looking into them when she was near. They named her Serafi, meaning The One With The Heavenly Sight.

From a very early age, two things were apparent with regards to Serafi. First of all she was born to be a leader; the other foals would always look to her for guidance, and she knew to always divide her attention between all of them. None were left out, and she cared for everyone. If someone was hurt she would be there to help, if someone was in trouble she would defend them.

Second, she would win any contest she cared to. Be it running, dancing, playful sparring or deep thought, Serafi excelled at everything. All she needed to do was look at someone, and suddenly they knew she was more right than they, and then she would win. It is said that one day, in an attempt to force her to lose a contest, a small group of jealous colts sought out a great antlered stag and asked him to challenge Serafi to a contest of whose horn had the most points. He did so, but the moment Serafi stared into his eyes he was overcome with such a deep sense of being her lesser that his antlers immediately fell off, and Serafi won this contest as she did any other. (Note: It's a unicorn legend, so obviously her horn has but a single point)

Serafi grew up to become lead mare of her part of the Great Herd, and in time leader of the Council, the gathering of leaders to make decisions for the whole of the Great Herd. She was a wise and caring leader, never abusing her power for her own gains, and none felt safer at any time than when they knew she was watching over them with her famous eyes.

But time and age catches up with everyone, and as she grew old Serafi's eyes became tired and slowly faded. No amount of magic would stave off the inevitable loss of her eyesight, her eyes every day turning a little more white than they had been the day before. She found it harder and harder to watch over her herd, the distance she could see grew shorter and shorter, and she knew it was only a matter of time before the world would grow dark to her and she could no longer watch over the herd as she had done for so many years.

In despair she turned her head to the sky, calling for the higher powers to help her protect her herd, and the higher powers looked down on her, seeing into her eyes, and were as captivated as any mortal had been all her life. They came down and stood before her, crying as they saw how her eyes were fading. Sharing her despair they offered her a way to watch over her herd, and she agreed. They took out one of her white eyes and placed it in the dark night, her gaze now shining down in the most dangerous hours of the day, watching and protecting her herd as desired so deeply.

To this day she watches over us, her eye slowly blinking. When it is closed the dark surrounds us and we must be extra careful, but she always opens it again to look down on us, and the nights when her eye is fully open and awake are the safest of all, they are the nights where her light shows us where trouble lurks, they are the nights when we can relax knowing the greatest leader our herd has ever had still takes care of us.
