Although these eevee fems were more mature than the others, they were still too young to have pups of their own, they would not be ready for that until the following spring. The leafeon males would mate with the eevee fems in order to pass on their "seed" to them...however, instead of injecting them with sperm, the males inject them with something different.
During the spring and summer, the most successful leafeon males would spend as much time as possible eating specific kinds of berries and grasses known to enhance their reproductive organs and give them the ability to produce microscopic spores that can be injected into a female eevee's vagina during mating. These spores would then seek out the cells of the eevee fem's body, altering them so that it would cause them to evolve into leafeon. The "seed" that these males produce would also contain large amounts of protein and vitamins that would be absorbed into the host's body to give them the means to survive hibernation until they were ready for their first reproductive mating the following spring.
Untrained people would not be able to tell the difference between a normal leafeon male and the few elite males who possess this ability. In newly made dens near the meadow, 12 young leafeon females (the eevee fems from earlier) were asleep, awaiting the spring to come out and begin life anew in their new forms. At the same time, Spearmint and the other males were sleeping in their own dens as well, also waiting for spring and the coming mating season, where the young elite male was hoping he could do better than he did during the "harvest". With the ground now covered in snow and the air outside cold, all the animals of the spring and summer are either asleep or have moved to warmer climates. However, for others, the coming of the snow and cold means the beginning of their season of prosperity.
