Sovereign - a sneak peek
Sovereign is the 2nd book in the Star Hopper series, it takes place around 17 or 18 years after the first one. This is a sneak peak at the start of it.
Rays of light penetrated into the dark room creating beams of gold. Small particles floated in and around them illuminated by the sun. One ray found its way to a sleeping fox. She rustled and grunted at it. Batting at it with her paw trying to get back to the deep sleep. But no success, she was awake. Her eyes slowly opened in a haze, everything in her sight blurred together. She sighed as she propped herself up with one arm and rubbed her lazy eyes with her free paw. A large toothy yawn escaped her snow white muzzle. She glanced over at the dark furred fox that lay in the bed next to her, he was still asleep.
"Crazy night last night."
The words came without her even thinking, but they were true. The fox turned slowly until she sat on the edge of the bed and stood up with a grunt. Slowly, she made her way to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. She was a mess; her white fur was mangled and dirty. A yawn escaped her muzzle. She used her paw to try to get her fur straightened out and after several tries she seemed content. Her snow white fur was as straight as it was going to be, for now.
From the other room she heard rustling and poked her head out of the bathroom.
"Oh, you're finally awake huh?"
He scoffed at her, "Oh, we both know that you just got up a minute ago."
He followed through with the same routine, propping himself up, yawning and taking in his surroundings, which hadn't changed much sense the previous night, a good thing. She pulled her head back into the bathroom.
"What are you doin' in there?" He asked
From the room he heard her moving about and a faucet running.
"Just trying to clean up a bit."
His eyes rolled, girls don't make sense. He'd go to his wedding looking like this. He maneuvered to sit on the edge of the bed and his eyes glanced at the calendar on the bedside table.
"Hey, would you look at that."
"What is it?" She asked from the bathroom, it gave it an echoic tone.
"Today's Princess Sapphire's birthday!"
Her head once again appeared, "What?"
"Yeah," he said, "that came quick."
"What time is it?"
The dark furred fox looked at the clock, "quarter to eleven, why?"
The vixen jumped out of the bathroom and started to collect her things, "Shit!" The male didn't get it, "What's going on here?"
She quickly put on her baggy dark colored clothes and packed what little she had up. "I have to go!"
"What? Why? We just barely woke up!"
The vixen closed in on him and gave him a peck on the cheek. "I'll call you back, don't worry I just have to go!"
"Go where!"
The vixen chuckled, "I'm late for my birthday party." Then she raced out the door.
The dark furred fox almost fell off the bed. "T...that was the princess?" His paw drew up to rub his cheek then he fell back on the bed.
