#1 of A Dream Realized

This is my first time actually writing a story with any length to it so please bare with me. Feel free to critique my writing though, I am always looking for ways to improve.

John sat up in bed, his alarm clock screeching and glanced out the window. He could see the sun beginning to rise above the tree outside his room, which meant that it was about 8AM. With a sigh he reached over and slammed his fist into the snooze button on his alarm before shutting it off. "1 week until it's time to head to Professor Rowan's for a starter... Maybe this year i can make it before they are all taken." He swung his legs over the side of his bed and grabbed his boots off the floor, quickly sliding his feet into them and grabbing his hat off the stand at the foot of the bed. He lived with his mom on a ranch that his father ran, for the most part enjoying a layed back lifestyle but he always seemed to crave more. He opened his door to head to the kitchen when the smell of eggs being cooked hit him. With a smile he set off down the hall and leaned through the kitchen door to find his mom at the stove cooking. "Well this is a first. What's the occasion?"

His mom smiled and gestured at the table for him to sit down. "Your father called an hour ago. He wants you to meet him at Professor Rowan's lab as soon as you can. So i thought i would make you breakfast to make thinks faster."

John frowned slightly. 'Professor Rowan's? What does my dad want me to go there for?' After a second he shook the thought off and sat at the table. "Do you have any idea why?" His mother nodded but just smiled at him as she set a plate of eggs and toast in front of him. Again John frowned and glanced from the food to his mom. "Are you going to tell me?"

His mom laughed and shook her head. "No, you're father asked me not to tell you." John sighed and started on his food. "Typical dad, always leaving me in the dark on his plans." His mother just laughed and left the room, headed toward the back door. When he finished his food, John set his plate in the sink and stood, calling out to his mom. "I'm headed out, will be back later." He waited a second for his mom to reply and when he heard a faint reply, he headed for the front door. The lab was on the other side of town so he had plenty of time to think over why his father would be there. After a few minutes he gave up. "Too many possibilities." A voice behind him made him jump. "Too many possibilities? For what?" John turned to find his friend Rose standing behind him. "For meeting my dad at Professor Rowan's. I was told to meet him there but wasn't given a reason." Rose laughed. "That's where I was headed. Though i was asked by the Professor himself to meet him there." John shook his head. "Is it bad that most people get their starter pokemon at 12 but we have yet to get one at 16?" Rose shrugged, maintaining her smile. "Maybe, but we still have plenty of time to get one." John sighed and after a second nodded before continuing toward the lab. "I just want to get out of here. I mean, living on the ranch is great but I want to get out of this place and travel. Meet new people and see new things."

Rose nodded slightly as she feel in step beside him. "So what are you going to do when you finally do set out on your adventure?" John shrugged in response and stared at his feet for a few minutes. "I haven't really planned it out. I just figured that when the time came I would leave. Don't really know what else there is to do." Rose punched him lightly in the shoulder, mock anger in her voice. "So you would leave without saying goodbye to everyone? And what about a traveling partner?" John laughed and shrugged, looking at Rose out of the corner of his eye with a slight smile. "Everyone I know already has a partner. And you know I wouldn't leave without saying bye." Again Rose hit him but this time she nearly knocked him over. "Everyone has a partner huh? So where is mine?" John shrugged. "I don't know, you tell me. I mean, I can't tell you who to travel with." Rose started to actually get angry with him before she noticed the smirk and realized he was playing with her. "You know, one of these days I won't notice when you are joking and you are going to get hurt."

John just smiled in response and gestured ahead of them. "Well that will have to wait, we are at the lab, now lets find out why we were called here." As they neared the lab's door, John's father stepped out and smiled at them. "I was wondering how long it would take for you to wake up." John rubbed the back of his head, grinning. "You know i'm a heavy sleeper. Just be glad mom cooked this morning or I would have been even longer." His father's eyes widened slightly. "Your mother cooked? And I missed it?" He shook his head before stepping to the side of the door. "Well get in here. Maybe if we get through this quick enough I can get home in time for some of that food." John laughed and followed Rose into the building. "So why were we called here anyway?" His father hid a smile, though John noticed the edge of his mouth twitching upward. "Well, there really aren't that many reasons to be called to the lab. So take a guess." John stared at his father for a second. "Well, I originally thought it had something to do with you. But seeing as Rose is here, it must be about us..." He thought for a while and an idea finally hit him as they neared the lab and Professor Rowan came into sight. "Is this about pokemon?" His father nodded slightly and John frowned. "It's still too early for starters...." When the three finally entered the room with Professor Rowan, John and Rose stopped dead in their tracks at the sight of two pokemon eggs sitting on a table.

Professor Rowan smiled at them and sat in a chair at a computer. "I'm glad to see you've finally arrived. I was looking over my starter database and found you had been here for the past 4 years trying to get starters but poor timing had you too late to get one. So called in a favor from breeder." John's eyes narrowed slightly. "So... you're saying these eggs are for us?" Rowan nodded and a grin slowly spread across John's face. "You mean we are finally getting our first pokemon?" Again Rowan nodded but held up a finger to stop any further questions. "I will give you these eggs but be warned, these pokemon will take alot of attention once they hatch." John couldn't help but laugh. "I've done my research sir. I've looked up the preferred foods for each of the different types so that when I got my first pokemon I would know what to get it." Rose finally spoke up, still staring at the eggs. "If the eggs are for us, which one is mine, and which is his?" John's father stepped up to the table and picked up one of the containers holding an egg and handed it to Rose and the second to John. "We didn't really decided which went to who. We don't even know what is in them." John held the container with both arms wrapped around it, trying to keep his eyes from growing wider. Finally after several minutes John found his voice and looked to Professor Rowan. "Why are you giving these eggs to us now? Why not wait until the starter pokemon are given out?" Professor Rowan shrugged slightly. "I figured that since these eggs won't hatch for another week at least, that there would be no harm in letting you hold onto them. Besides, I wanted to get you your pokemon before anyone else this time so you could begin your journey." John stared down at the egg again. "Thank you. It's so hard to believe I will finally have my first pokemon though." His father stepped up and put a hand on his shoulder, smiling. "Well you better start, cause now it's up to you to raise your egg. Go on and head back home, I will stay and get everything else set up for you with Professor Rowan." John nodded and left the lab, slowly walking back to his house with the thought of what his first pokemon spinning through his mind.
