#6 of A Boy and His Lucario Series

The boys had finally made their way into bustling Pewter City. They decided to stop at the Pokémon Center to rest up a bit, and Lucario wanted some more soup. They sat at a table eating when Lucario asked a question.

"Master, I am your only Pokémon, and the gym leader is likely to have more. What if I get knocked out?"

"Don't worry; I'm not going to let you be knocked out." John pulled some little bottles out of his bag. "I bought theses potions back in Viridian City after we stalked up on candy bars. If you're getting tired during battle, I'm aloud to use these on you and they'll make you feel better."

"How interesting." Lucario stared at the potions. John signaled for him to finish his soup. Lucario did as he was told and when he finished John gave him a candy bar. He happily ate it when he noticed John staring of into the distance.

"Master, is something wrong?" John came to and blushed a little.

"Oh, ha ha no nothing's wrong. I was just thinking about the battle. I'm a little nervous. This will be our first gym battle, and I hear the leader uses Rock Type Pokémon."

"Don't worry Master, I'm a Fighting Type, Fighting is super effective against Rock. I'm also a Steel Type, so if they do hit me, it won't do much damage."

"Really? You're a Steel Type too? I never would have guessed that, you're so soft and furry." Lucario gave a little giggle.

"Don't worry Master, we'll win for sure! Come on, let's go!" Lucario bolted out the door and down the street. John ran after him.

"Lucario, wait! The gym is the other way!"

The Pewter Gym looked like a giant boulder placed in the middle of a city. A giant stone sign suspended over the gym read "Pewter City Gym. Leader: Brock, the Rock Hard Trainer!" John gulped. Lucario grabbed John by the hand and started pulling him towards the door.

"Come on Master, we're never going to get that badge standing out here!" The giant door opened with a loud creak. The inside was totally dark, it almost looked abandoned. A closer look revealed a single light on the far side of the gym. Underneath the light sat a person with spiky brown hair. When he saw John he stood up.

"I am Brock, leader of the Pewter City Gym. Have you come to challenge me?"

"I am John of Pallet Town. Under the Pokémon League rules, I have come to challenge you for the Boulder Badge." Brock nodded.

"So be it, John. But I warn you, I will not hold back." The lights beamed on to show the gym floor. It was a plain gray floor with rocks and boulders scattered across it. A man wearing red and holding two small flags walked onto a platform on the side of the field.

"I am a Pokémon League appointed official. This battle shall take place between only Brock and John. The leader is allowed no substitutions and shall fight until out of usable Pokémon. The same goes for the challenger, however he is allowed substitutions. Trainers ready?" The both nodded. The official raised his flags and shouted "BEGIN!"

"Geodude, go!" Brock threw out a Poke' Ball. Out of it came a large rock with a face and fists.

"Geodude!" it called out, but John heard it say "Let's do this!" John pointed to the field.

"Alright Lucario time to show them what we're made of!"

"Yes Master!" he said as he jumped onto the field.

"Geodude, use Rock Throw!" Brock commanded.

"You got it!" John heard. Geodude picked up some of the larger rocks around it and chucked them at Lucario.

"Lucario, use Force Palm on the rocks!" Lucario stood perfectly still until the rocks started to get closer, then he jumped into the air. He stuck his arm out and from it shot pure concentrated aura, smashing the rocks to pieces. He landed in front of Geodude. "Alright Lucario, use Dark Pulse!" Aura visibly flowed down Lucario's body and turned black when it reached his feet and jutted out and struck Geodude. The Geodude was sent flying into a boulder with a loud crash on impact. When the dust cleared, Geodude had punctured the boulder and was lying on the ground knocked out. The official raised the flag on John's side.

"Geodude is unable to battle, Lucario wins!" he shouted.

"Alright, way to go Lucario!" John shouted with pride.

"Your Lucario is strong, being able to take Geodude out with one attack. But raw power won't save you now. Onix! Go!" Out of the Poke' Ball emerged a huge snake like Pokémon made entirely of boulders with a crest on top of its head.

"Yon! It cried. John heard "Leave it to me!"

"Lucario, get behind it!" Lucario jumped from rock to rock at lightning speed, Onix couldn't keep its eyes on him.

"Onix! Dig underground!" Brock commanded. Onix shot down into the ground. Lucario stopped moving.

"Find it Lucario!" Lucario closed his eyes and the appendages on his head rose. He was tracking Onix through its aura. Lucario opened his eyes and shot up into the air, closely followed by Onix. "Use Reversal!" John shouted. Lucario spun around multiple times in midair, then turned and nailed Onix with a powerful punch. Onix was sent crashing into the ground. Lucario landed directly in front of Onix, seeing no immediate danger.

"Onix use Crunch!" The fall was a trap. Onix opened its gapping maw and grabbed Lucario. It chomped down on him with it giant jaw.

"AAAAAAWWWWWWW!" Lucario screamed in pain.

"Lucario! Get out of there with Dark Pulse!" Lucario's aura turned black and scattered. Onix jerked back from the pulse, freeing Lucario. "Let's finish this! Use Aura Sphere!" Lucario put his hands together and slowly separated them. In between his hands a big ball of pure aura had formed. With a mighty thrust, Lucario chucked the ball at Onix. The ball pounded Onix in the head, sending it head first into the air. Onix rammed against the gym wall with a mighty crash. The dust cleared and the official raised his flag.

"Onix is unable to battle! The Victory goes to John!" John ran out onto the field and held Lucario tight.

"Yes! You did it Lucario! I'm so proud of you!"

"M-Master, could you please use one of those sprays?"

"Oh yeah, sure." John reached into his bag and pulled out one of the potions. He sprayed it on Lucario, who instantly became better.

"Thank you Master. That feels much better." Brock walked up to them with a smile on his face.

"Good work you two." he said "I can defiantly tell the friendship between you is strong. No one has ever defeated me that fast. Here, take this as a symbol of your victory." Brock handed John a small pin that resembled a brown diamond. The Boulder Badge. "You've earned it." John took the badge and looked at it with a sparkle in his eyes.

"Hey Lucario."

"Yes Master?" John handed the badge to Lucario.

"You've earned it pal." Lucario was beaming.

"Oh thank you Master! This is fantastic!"

Nightfall came as the boys were taking Route 3. John decided they should make camp before it got too dark. John set up his sleeping bag while Lucario gathered fire wood.

"It's too bad I'm not a Fire Type, I could start this fire with ease." Lucario whimpered." John smirked at the comment.

"Don't worry, you just need to know what to use." John found some small dry sticks and began quickly rubbing the two together. This generated enough heat to spark a small flame, which eventually caught the rest of the wood to make a nice sized fire.

"Wow Master, what a neat trick."

"Thanks, I'll teach it to you if you want. Now, are you hungry?"

"No, I think I'm ok." Lucario's stomach growled loudly. He grabbed his stomach and blushed. "Ok, maybe just a little." John chuckled and patted him on the head.

"Well lucky for you, I was able to buy a thermos and I filled it with some soup from the Pokémon Center." Lucario licked his lips as John warmed the soup over the fire. When it was warm enough John poured some into the cap and gave it to Lucario.

"Ouch, I burned my tongue!"

"Be careful, food is hotter when it's cooked over fire." The boys enjoyed their soup as John would show Lucario the constellations and stars in the sky. Lucario listened intently, pleased to learn something new. When the soup was finished, John packed up the thermos and they watched the fire. Lucario left once or twice to get more wood.

"Lucario, you did amazing today. I had no idea you were that strong. You took out both of those Pokémon really quick."

"Well, I couldn't have done it alone; you were giving me the orders after all."

"Yeah, I guess one is not complete without the other." After a while, the fire started to die and the boys were starting to get sleepy. John crawled into his sleeping bag and looked back over at Lucario. "Oh no, you don't have anything to sleep on."

"I could just sleep in the Poke' Ball, Master."

"Are you sure?"

"Well..." John could tell Lucario was still uneasy about going into a Poke' Ball.

"You can come sleep on my sleeping bag if you want."

"Really?"

"Sure, I don't think there's enough room for us both in the bag, but if you curled up on top it would be a lot softer than the ground." Lucario grinned.

"Thank you Master." Lucario curled up on top of the sleeping bag at John's chest. The fire started to go out more and more by the minute. They would be in a completely star lit night. "Goodnight Master." John reached out and scratched behind Lucario's ear.

"Goodnight Lucario. Sweet dreams."
