#2 of A Boy and His Lucario Series

It had been three months since John had received the egg he found from Professor Oak. He had turned 16 over those months, just waiting for his egg to hatch so he could finally begin his Pokémon journey. Every night he polished it, rotated it, and set it on a soft cushion under a lamp. 'I can't wait to see what kind of Pokémon is going to hatch from this!' He would think to himself every night before bed.

One day, John noticed he was getting low on food so he left his egg under the lamp and headed for the local market. He returned several hours later with a large bag full of fruits and veggies, meat, and a chocolate bar for a snack. He put the food in the fridge, grabbed the candy bar and headed into the living room where he sat in a big reclining chair reading a book. His candy bar was set on the end table next to the chair; he had already taken a few bites. When John desired another bite he reached for the bar, but didn't feel anything. He looked away from his book, it was gone.

'Someone stole my candy bar!' He was flustered, who would steal candy? But then he stopped. 'WHO stole my candy bar? Is there someone here?' He began to look around the house, but could find no sign of anyone or his candy bar. Just when he sat back down he heard a loud THUNK from upstairs. 'Ah ha, so they're upstairs. Wait, so is my egg! They're going to steal my egg!' John equipped himself with a knife from the kitchen and jolted up the steps.

"Get away from my egg!" He shouted, but there was no one there. "I guess I'm just paranoid." John sighed. But then he heard the sound of chewing. He slowly looked back and saw a small black and blue dog like creature on his bed. "HEY!" He shouted "that's my candy bar!" He quickly snatched the bar from the creature's hands. The little creature's eyes began to water, and then it jumped at John and tried to get the candy back, all the while crying.

"Ri! Riolu olu!" it would cry while jumping up trying to reach the bar. John stopped, and the creature grabbed the bar and began eating it with a smile on its face.

"Riolu?" John was puzzled. Then it hit him. He looked over at the lamp; the egg was gone. "Did, did you hatch from the egg?"

"Ri." It nodded with a smile. John jumped forward and held the newly hatched Riolu close to his face.

"WOW! A Riolu! I've only ever heard stories about Riolu before! Now I have one!" Riolu was a bit surprised by the sudden action of its new trainer, but it laughed and hugged him, happy to have a friend.

Every morning, Riolu would poke at John with its usual "Olu Riolu!" which John had come to guess meant "Time to wake up!" John and Riolu and become the best of friends, they knew everything about one another. For example, John knew Riolu's favorite snack was chocolate, and that its feet were its only ticklish spot. Riolu knew that John knew a lot about Pokémon, and never worried when it was in a battle. Riolu also knew about the loss of John's parents. It often tried to comfort John, and it usually worked.

One night, John had an unusual dream. He was surrounded by nothing but darkness. Then out of nowhere that darkness turned to a light purple. John shielded his eyes from the sudden color change when something appeared in the middle of the emptiness. It floated in mid air, its legs crossed, holding a spoon in each hand. It was an Alakazam. John had only ever seen his grandfather's Alakazam before; he didn't know what to think. Then it did something John would never have suspected.

"John." It spoke. This totally caught John off guard. "Yes, what you are seeing is real. I am speaking to you."

"But I thought Pokémon couldn't talk?!" John was completely stunned.

"Never mind that. John, it has come to my attention that you have befriended a Riolu. The two of you appear to be great friends."

"Yeah, Riolu and I are the best friends anyone will ever find!"

"That may be true, but you will never truly understand your Riolu unless you can communicate."

"Communicate?"

"By the will of your family line, you will have the ability to do so." Alakazam lifted one of its spoons. A small white beam shot into John's head. John began to fall over when he heard Alakazam speak one last time. "You shall do so, as your grandfather has done."

John could feel a small poking, "Master, It's time to wake up!" John opened his eyes to see Riolu going through the usual morning routine.

"Oh, good morning Riolu." John got up and started to walk to the stairs but suddenly froze. "Wait, what did you say?" Riolu smiled.

"I said it's time to get up." John's eyes popped out of his head, his mouth hanging wide open.

"Y-you you just talked!" he screamed.

"Well yeah, I talk all the time." Riolu responded. John looked at himself, then at Riolu, then at himself, and fainted. "Ah! Master!" Riolu shouted as it ran towards John.

John opened his eyes. He was lying on his bed and Riolu was standing next to him, its eyes closed and the appendages on its head were raised. "Oh, Riolu, you'll never guess this crazy dream I had. You could-" Riolu put its hand on John's.

"Master, it wasn't a dream. I spoke and you understood me. I was tracing your aura and it looks like there's an unusual amount of aura in your brain. I think it's giving you the ability to understand Pokémon." John was speechless. Understand Pokémon, could that be what Alakazam was talking about?

"Well, I'm glad I finally get to talk to you Riolu."

"Me too, Master!" Riolu giggled.

John and Riolu went for a walk, just talking to one another when something hit John hard. He fell to the ground with a loud shriek of pain.

"Master!" Riolu shouted.

"Ha Ha Ha! What do we have here?" a low voice boomed. Riolu slowly turned around.
