CHAPTER 1: the rising sun

*muffled shouting* *a muffled defence*

Scraaaape scraaaaaaaape scraaape...

Grey slowly opened one eye, a plume of orange dust fell from the ceiling.

*more muffled shouting*

Grey sat up straight, *sigh* he stretched then rose to his feet, his eyes were still bloodshot, his vision blurred by the rude awakening. The orange morning light spilled into his cave, glimmering on the sandy specks that covered the floor. Grey slowly shuffled outside, he scanned the area...just orange sand, mesas and the odd shrub...as always. Scorpions and bugs fled into the shrubs to escape the morning sun.

Grey marched his way out from the safety of his cave and onto a peak, he came here every morning to stretch, today was no exception.

*muffled shouting* *a muffled 'why me?'*

Where was that sound coming from? Mid-yawn Grey turned behind him to glimpse a herd of white vans and trucks stacked high with metal poles, traffic cones and dirty machinery. He'd seen this before down in the valley, humans armed with complex and equally grubby machinery swarm an area like locusts, they plow through the area leaving behind a trail of a black rocky substance. Grey saw no purpose in doing this and thought it to be part of the human's self-destructive nature.

Seconds passed as Grey stared blankly at the humans shuffling like the morning bugs before it came to him; "THAT'S MY HOUSE!" he openly exclaimed, they were building on the ground directly above his cave. In a fit of blind rage Grey marched up the hill to meet the human invaders, he took a moment to rough his fur and pick a suitable feral look, scare them away if reason failed, humans were ignorant like that.

He clambered up the rocky outcroppings to get to the humans then marched towards one holding a clipboard; the source of the shouting and presumably the pack leader. The human was large and heavy, with layers of discoloured fabrics covering his furless body, this odd fashion the humans had was the bi-product of not needing to hunt, they grew lazy and pathetic through the generations, alienating themselves from nature, seeking to destroy it rather than embrace it.

Grey tugged on the pack leader's jacket, it was disturbingly wet and slimy, "hey!" Grey shouted, the human slowly turned around, still staring at the clipboard, "why are you..." he was interrupted by the human, horrified and flailing his arms at the sight of Grey, the clipboard fell to the floor with a petty *tap* "AY" the human shouted "you were meant to round up all these here critters!" motioning at one of the lesser-humans of his clan. Grey stared at the man, confused, "what..." he was interrupted again, this time by a clumsy oaf of a man running at him. The oaf leapt at Grey, who had already moved out of the way, the oaf hit the floor with a satisfactory *thud* sending orange dust into the air around him, the leader of the humans sighed then made a leap for Grey as well.

Grey backed off slowly, as two large unhealthy humans rose and began to waddle their way towards him, he was inches away from being able to escape down a ledge before he was grabbed from behind by a third human, sweat dripped off the man's face, he was soiled with a variety of dust, sand and oil. Grey struggled and tried to break free, but the large human's chunky arms were wrapped around his body and neck, preventing any movement. "Looks like we got one of them dogs!" the chunky human announced, Grey tried to correct him but was restricted by the flabby mass of the man's arms. "Throw it in the truck with the other critters" the lead human ordered, the oaf and the chunky human complied, throwing Grey into a dark and grubby truck.

Grey wondered if all humans were this stupid, he panned his vision around the dimly lit interior of the truck, they had managed to gather a few small insects and a broken shrub as their captives, the rear windows of the truck had metal bars poorly welded in place and the interior was covered in chipboard.

*muffled cheering* *a few muffled shouts*

Grey sat in the corner, motionless, this day obviously wasn't going his way, so he sat there trying to either figure out a way to escape, or to get some sleep, he didn't care which...
