Chapter 2

Smiling I blew out the candles, wishing that my parents might understand my love for Derek. If I ever tell them that is. I have know Derek ever since he became a guard. I had caught him stealing looks at me, I stole looks at him as well. It was only fair.

We ate exotic fruits, meats from across the seas and much more. Everyone at my birthday got some form of alcohol meanwhile I stuck with the healthier option, water. I could have had juice but I like my water. But the more I look around I saw that there was lots of steak and lamb. Derek was standing with some of his fellow guards. They laughed and joked drunkenly.

My dad called me to the middle of the hall, my brow furrowed with confusion. He made a speech which basically told me that I had more responsibilities and other such things. I grimaced at that fact. That probably meant less time for drawing and more time spent in training. Next was mum her speech eased my tension. She said that I wouldn't be alone, that I would have help in my training, etc. Smiling at them, thinking of how lucky I was a to be born in such a caring family and city. After a few more speeches from guards and relatives, we had a few more dances because it was getting late.

In the middle of a dance with my sister Jill I began to feel the heat and told her that I would be on the balcony. Her brow crumpled in confusion, I waved my hand indicating I was feeling the heat or something. Her frown melted away and she nodded letting me get some air.

Out on the balcony I could see the stars shining in the night sky. Some bigger than others, some twinkling others not. The moon was full and it seemed closer than usual. I watched as a shooting star shot across the midnight sky. Sighing with content I placed my hands on the railing looking out over the city, from this balcony you could see the sea in the distance. It seemed like everything was falling into just the right place in the universe.

A cold breeze washed over me cooling me down. It's always nice when a breeze comes along at just the right time. However this breeze did not feel natural, it seemed too sudden almost deliberate. I immediately felt on edge as a wave of uncertainty washed over me. Looking in every direction to see if I could find anything out of place, but there was nothing. Absolutely nothing. Sighing I turned to head inside. Big mistake. As soon as I turned my back on the scenery something hit me in the neck and the world faded into darkness.

While unconscious a figure formed in the far reaches of the darkness. Heading over to the strange being I noticed that as I got close it seemed to have a glowing aura. Slowing my advance the shape turned to face me motioning for me to come closer and saying.

"Don't be afraid young one. I am the power that dwells deep inside of you." it's voice, it sounds like my own. But how? How could this....being have my voice? Cautiously stepping forward soon to stop so that we were at least arms length apart from each other. He smiled, easing the slight knot of worry in the pit of my stomach.

He was me, seeing him up close I could make out my facial features everything, this being had me down to the last inch of fur. His eyes were the same as well. My mind flooded with questions, like where did he come from? What is he? I knew I already had both of the answers but there were other questions.

"Let me explain." He offered, nodding he explained everything, who he was, what he was made from. He gave me all the answers about himself that my mind had been asking. 'Makes sense I suppose him being apart of me' I thought, my anxiety fading. He then went onto explain about my power. My skill in other words. Wasn't something I was expecting, I was half expecting some form of healing like my sisters or another type of magic but no. He told me that my skill or power was necromancy. I was, no am a necromancer.

Thinking back to a book I had read about the magics of the realms, remembering a whole section dedicated to necromancers. I would be able to communicate with the dead, bring the dead back to life under my command. There was a lot more than just that I was sure of it. The being, no I got my attention back.

"The only thing with your necromancy is that you don't need to perform any rituals to summon a spirit or raise the dead. You can do what you like with your power, all by thinking about bringing the spirit to you or raising the dead with the mere thought." If what he was saying was true then why was I only learning about my skill now. Shouldn't I have been able to use it since birth? It was troubling to think of at first but I could let it slide. Maybe my power was a late bloomer.

He offered his hand and I took it. A searing pain shot up my arm, filling my body from head to toe. It ended almost as quick as it had started. I looked for him but he had disappeared. I furrowed my brow confused for a second, realising we must have been separated and that was us being reunited. We had become whole again. We were one.

When I came to I was in a room, it was a little too dark to tell where I was. Trying to call out was a terrible idea as my throat was like a desert. trying to sit up was a no go. I was strapped to the bed. Was I in a hospital? Lying back down relaxing my muscles. A woman came into view. I could just make out her face. She had sharp features, a sneer seemingly plastered to her mouth. Her voice didn't suit her face.

"Are you ok, hun?" She asked in such a sweet, motherly voice that I just starred at her. Who was this woman? "Soul, it's me. It's your mother." Feeling my brow crumple in confusion. She must have noticed and said that I had just been in a surgery but the only risk was memory loss.

"Huh," was all I could say to that. She must be my mum then. I'm a terrible son, forgetting the woman who raised me. My brow relaxed and a look of sorrow replaced it. "Sorry I forgot you." I said to her, she smiled weaving a hand through my head furs. Wonder if I forgot anyone else in my family?

A nurse came in flicking on the light reading through my chart. She smiled saying I was good to go. She also explained that I lashed out while I was unconscious, I looked at her cheek in horror. A claw mark, stretching from her cheek bone to her chin. I blurted out apology after apology. She waved a hand silencing me, telling me that she didn't blame me. Mum just had to sign some discharge papers at the front desk before we could leave.

We walked through heaps of trash, we didn't own a car. Not that you could drive a car through the streets here. The buildings were all clumped together. There were lots of sick people here, most of them children. Plants were lying dead in their plant pots and bones lay on the ground everywhere. Our city was dying.

When we reached home I asked mum if I was a necromancer. She told me I was and the most powerful the universe has ever known, before she asked me why I was asking. Telling her about what I had seen while unconscious she nodded slowly saying that maybe my power had been separated from me during the surgery.

After talking about necromancy for a while I announced that I was tired and was going to get some rest. She offered to tuck me in, thinking about it for a second before nodding. She tucked me in, the sneer had left her face, it must have been the way I was strapped to the bed. Soon after she tucked me in the arms of slipped wrapped around me sending me into a dreamless sleep.
