#9 of The Chronicles of James Travant

The rest of Travis and Tanya's night and week passed in comfortable closeness between the two. Travis made himself useful around the apartment by fixing the damaged door and repairing her lawn, among other small house chores, all the while keeping a close proximity to his new lover, the two taking their time to explore each other, both in mind and body.

But, as true as the statement "time flies when you're having fun," the week given to Travis to recover from his injuries had to come to its inevitable close...

Travis sighed as he pressed the seals shut on his uniform, leaning down to lace up his boots and tie them off.

"Whoever said time flies when you're having fun needs to be shot." He grumped.

"Why's that?" Tanya's voice sang in his ears as she came in bearing a cup of tea for him.

"Thanks." He said, taking a sip and setting it down as he went to his other boot, pulling at it to make sure the knee armor panels sat correctly before lacing it up. "Because he was just too right. He probably jinxed the whole damn thing for the rest of the human race."

Tanya laughed and went back to fetch her own mug and Travis sat back, taking another long drink of the near boiling liquid.

"You're gonna burn yourself." She warned, re-entering and perching on the armrest next to him.

"I've had worse." he replied, leaning his head against her side. He shifted his injured shoulder, satisfied with the pain level, which was now down to just a dull ache.

"At least I was some use in my time here, I fixed that door." He laughed, jerking his head towards the front door across the room.

Tanya smiled, "And did a very good job I'd say. Thanks hun, it means a lot, it would have cost me more if you hadn't done it." She leaned over and kissed his temple and hummed in the loving comfort he brought.

She took a light sip of her drink as it started to cool down some, "I really wish you didn't have to go. But I guess duty calls, hmm? Do me a favor, and don't get hurt..." She softly gave a chuckle and ruffled his hair.

"I really care about you y'know. Work sucks; I guess I should go to work today instead of calling in sick like yesterday. That was a good day, wasn't it?" She smiled at the memory, then looked to him, "Excited to be back on the job and not being bored with me?" She laughed playfully. "And make sure to pick me up tomorrow for our date!"

Travis grinned, leaning up to kiss her before climbing to his feet. "Wouldn't miss it."

As he mad his way down the steps and outside, the phone in his pocket chirped again. He gave Tanya hug and a kiss before reaching for it and flipping it open as he made his way to his cruiser.

"Savant."

"Savvy, it's Aces."

"What's up dude?" Travis smiled as he popped the door on his cruiser and slid into the driver's seat, giving the gauges a cursory glance before warming up and turning over the engine.

"You're comin' in today, yeah?"

"Sure enough, much to the dismay of present company." He replied, smiling at Tanya as he slipped on his headset and turned the phone over to it before shifting gears and pulling away from the curb.

"Personnel has a surprise for you, you may like it, hurry in." The line cleared.

"Eh?" Travis asked dead air, checking his watch and letting his boot ride a bit heavier on the gas.

A short drive later...

"Alright Aces, what's this all about?" Travis asked as he stepped out of his cruiser to meet his friend.

"Dude, we've been accepted." Aces beamed, steering his friend towards the main doors.

"Accepted for what?" Travis asked, automatically bewildered.

"Oh, you know." Aces replied cryptically.

They stepped through the doors and Travis was immediately drawn over to the personnel desk, where a massive German Shepard Kaynine officer stood talking to the clerk.

"Ah, you must be Savant." The Kaynine said, ears flicking towards him as he turned to greet the two.

"Yes sir." Savant automatically replied.

"Well Savant, I'm Lieutenant Draz, from Kaynine Personnel, it's my understanding that you and your friend Raynes here have standing applications to enter the EU Kaynine program."

Realization finally dawned on Travis. "You mean..."

The Kaynine's ear flicked in an affirmative, handing him and Raynes sealed envelopes. "We're expecting you at the Doghouse bright and early tomorrow morning. Take this time you need now to arrange any personal effects and have them packed in case you need to move quarters. I would say call your loved ones, but as per standard SOP you're on a communications blackout until the process completes in two weeks time. Congratulations, Pups."

The Kaynine turned from them then and Travis and Raynes backed away, turning from him to make their way out.

"Damn." Travis said, staring at the Kaynine emblem printed on the envelope.

"Hope you didn't have any plans." Raynes grinned.

"I did actually...damn!" He hissed.

"Your ladyfriend? Make it up to her." Raynes peeled open the seal on his envelope and slipped into the passenger seat of Travis' cruiser as Travis got in the opposite side. "Fuck yeah! I made the pilot program! No more boring ass patrols for me."

Tayna smiled the entire day at work, and her scientist friend, Kine, noticed and she talked with her over lunch, about Travis, how she was falling for him, how she loved spending time with him, and it seemed that she was on cloud nine. She got home that day and no call or nothing, she slept it off so she would be rested for the date between Travis' and her the next day.

She woke up the next morning, stretched and took a long hot shower, her face all bright with the thought of seeing Travis later that afternoon. She dressed nice but proper for work and whistled all the way to and during work making her rounds and such. She talked, smiled, and wasn't her quiet 'don't talk to me' self. She walked home with a group of her new made friends, then went upstairs, threw her clothes off and jumped into the shower, and did her hair and makeup a bit before slipping on a nice but simple dress that suited the night's planned date.

She waited on her couch, in silence, lit candles calming her down a little making her not freak out in excitement. She practically glowed with the love growing fast in her heart and the time past, she sat there staring at the clock, an hour late and no call, "He may just be stuck at a patrol or something at the office, he wouldn't stand you up." She spoke to no one but herself, two, three and four hours she waited until she fell asleep on the couch. She awoke with the bird friend tapping on the balcony door. She felt tears well in her eyes, but she got up and let the door slide open to her little friend who swooped around her and landed on her shoulder. "Hey little one..." She was sad, her voice cracked. She walked to the kitchen and got a glass of water, grabbing a clean uniform from the closet and she let the bird fly around some as she took a quick rinse off and slipped into the uniform. The bird chirped as some fruit and seed was laid out by her as well as water and she let the balcony door stay open as she left for work...

The Doghouse...

"Good morning Pup, I hope you slept well and put what affairs you could on hold for the next couple weeks, welcome to Kaynine Genetics." The German Shepherd grinned widely as he gripped Travis' hand in a firm handshake. Travis smiled and offered his own greeting, while wondering on the inside just how many Kaynines chose a dog species that had pointed ears. Thinking on it, he'd seen precious few Kaynines take on a species such as the Labradors or the like.

The furred scientist in front of him was quick to snap him from his musing. "Well now, I know you're probably as skittish as a squirrel in the Doghouse motor pool right now, so I'll try and make it simple, to be blunt, you pick out the species of canine you wish to become, we'll plug it into your gene map, you'll park your ass on that fine-looking contraption over there..." He jerked one pawpad at a table with various instruments pointed at it. "...and start to grow your fur. You'll be put down today, and wake up in 4 days to meet your partner and begin tweaking and adjusting to your form, any questions?"

"No sir." Travis replied, stripping his t-shirt off, followed by his uniform trousers.

"Good, go ahead and lay down on the table, what species will you be joining?" The Shepherd collected his clothes, tossed them into a basket and sat down at his computer console.

Travis smiled as he sat on the cool metal of the table and laid down. "Siberian Husky sir..."

Starfire Industries...

She wasn't at all chipper, and she wouldn't even talk to her more close friends, in fact other than orders or reporting she didn't talk much at all. She shrugged it off later in the afternoon figuring that he'd at least call her or leave a message soon. She went home and nothing, the bird had left, eating all the left food before doing so. She stripped down, grabbed a bottle of whiskey from the liquor cabinet, as well as a shot glass and laid down in her bed. She took a shot and put the rest on the bedside table for now.

The Doghouse Genetics Lab...

"Gah!" Travis cried out as again the pain struck him, his transformation process had begun hours ago, starting with his genetic structure being mapped, the model for his new structure created, and a special radiation gun aimed at him to begin the process.

The lab dog had failed to mention how painful a genetic restructuring was.

The low whine of the gun began to increase in pitch again and Travis gritted his teeth as the cold fire enveloped his body, exploding from his core into his limbs.

"Phase one wrapping up, everything's green so far, prepare the sedatives." He heard one of the scientists say.

Thank God... Travis lifted one hand to wipe the sweat from his eyes, and almost immediately jerked back in surprise. His fingertips had become thick and rough, the skin taking on a much darker shade, and all down his arms, a soft down had grown.

"Never said it'd be that fast..." He managed over his panting breath.

He heard a chuckle nearby. "Hey Draz, I think he likes it."

Lieutenant Draz's features came under the light as the Kaynine inspected the initial changes.

"You want some more, puppy dog?" The Lieutenant asked, grinning at the young officer.

"Fuck yeah." Travis replied, finally lowering his hand and letting his head fall back. "...Fuck yeah."

During that time...

Tanya didn't drink any more and she went through the next few days with no word from Travis, a week went by and she went to work, came home slept, in the same cycle. Her friends forced her out on the 8th night she hadn't heard from him.

She was half drunk and a guy wanted to take her home all her friends said go for it but she merely refused, saying to her friends that she couldn't take it... that she didn't want to sleep with anyone right now and she left the bar. She walked home, but stopped on the small walking bridge and looked down at the water streaming underneath. "Life goes on just like water moves down the stream. Yeah. True... but it said nothing about it being as easy..."

She threw a rock into the stream and a guy came seemingly out of no where approaching her. "Hey pretty lady, what's troubling you."

She mumbled the typical female response, "A dumb guy, go away."

He was smooth, but she saw through it, "But I just don't want to see you hurt, it's not right to see a pretty lady like yourself hurt."

He stepped closer and she stepped away on guard, now facing her and she heard footsteps behind her now two. She knew it.

She half snarled, almost as if she were a dog and her muscles flinched, "Shouldn't pick on girls, you never know when one of them can kick both of your asses."

She took a stance as she heard the scuffle of feet behind her foot shot out backwards and caught the man in the stomach and as she brought it back to her she faked a punch and kneed the man she had spoken to in the side then punched him in the windpipe just enough to make him gasp for air.

"Hope the 'wielders pick on you next." and with that said, she walked away, back to her home and locked the doors. The bird was there, and she smiled softly and just flopped down on her bed. The next morning she still hadn't slept and she called in saying she needed her week's personal leave.

It was granted to her. She just sat in her house that morning and afternoon... the next few days she went shopping, for food and she didn't feel like buying any clothing so instead she bought a few movies and sat at home watching them.

The 13th night she decided to start the inevitable, she got a box and put the things that Travis had got her, the pictures of him and her together, and the other things that reminded her of him, she put it all into a box and put it in the corner near the balcony. She heaved a deep sigh and sat on the floor looking at one particular picture, the one of him and her a few days after they met, it was such a good picture...

She fell asleep on the floor, the next morning she awoke and put on a pair of denim jeans and a half unbuttoned white blouse, she grabbed an orange and peeled it, and while eating it went through the old things of Travis and her. Oddly enough a small smile formed on her face, she still loved him... not even if he had moved on without her.
