Umm hi everyone

This is my first story on any site so i hope it works... I don't really know what to tag this as so please bear with my on that. If you like it please tell me at the bottom. If you don't, please tell me what i can improve on and stuff. Still i hope you like it!

The new age had arrived, all things living in peace and harmony. Well, in as much peace as possible. Different ideals and different views will always drive people against each other and for anyone unfortunate enough to get stuck in the middle, they're going to get dragged along head first. But that's life, that's all it was, that's all it will ever be. But sometimes you get lucky, sometimes things just work, and sometimes the answer you've wanted can appear out of the most unexpected circumstance. Unfortunately, it's hardly ever like that and for James, it seemed impossible.

It was yet another dreary day, a blanket of cloud rested over James's head, blocking the sun. The grey sky reflected the feeling James felt inside him, dull and hopeless. He gave a long groan as he trudged down the quiet street, only the faint thumps of his feet and the sound of distant chatter to accompany him as he walked.

He had a strong and muscular form, his dark brown hair was short but still messy. His blue eyes were just as dull as the sky above him. Today was another example of just how unfair life was, too many days of hard work. Hours spent working overtime just just try and help make things a little bit more comfortable for him and his daughter. Just to find out that he had lost his job and that he was to be out of the office within half an hour. There was no reason why either, just a "get out and deal with it". Typical... bloody typical.

James glanced up down the street, but then he just let his head drop again. He had failed his daughter again, he had promised her a good birthday... and he couldn't even do that.

James looked up and he could see the dull writhing of the sea. Even it seemed to be to depressed to doing anything interesting. James just walked towards it blindly, his mind to deep in thought to realise where he was going, instead just taking him down the root it had done for years. Without warning James walked into something and there was a yell. He glanced down hurriedly to see a stocky mole staring up at him angrily.

"Watch it jackass!"

It yelled, giving James a evil glare.

"Sorry!"

James said quickly as he tried to walk around him, only to find the mole taking a step to block him. The mole was getting redder and redder through his fur by the minute and James had no idea what to do.

"Damn well better be! Frikkin' humans! Think you run the place because you got a man in power! You know what I think?!"

James didn't want to to know what he thought, quickly he took a step around him and hurried off away from the mole. Only to hear him start yelling out behind him.

"Hey! I ain't done talking to you! Get back here!"

James could see more and more people staring at him. Quietly James pushed through the crowds and hurriedly headed towards the main bridge. Maybe he could escape the raging mole in the crowds of the bridge. He pushed past dragons, moles and humans alike as he worked his way towards the bridge. Today was just turning out to be more of a nightmare by the second. There could be no way this day could any worse.

************

Despite the ill tempered nature of the moles, they were perhaps the best engineers the world had ever seen and this was apparent from the city. Skyscrapers reached dizzying heights and the intricate detail of the city was amazing to behold. But the most impressive piece of engineering was the enormous bridge across the ocean. Bridging the gap between the two halves of the city and showcasing the hard work of many years of planning and building, "The Gateway" as it was known to the locals was a symbol of co-operation between the three species.

But James wasn't fussed about the engineering of the bridge right now and the only thing it represented to him was a way out and away from the angry mole. His desire to just to get home the biggest thing on his mind. A harsh wind began to pick up and James was buffeted by it as he made his way over the bridge. He glanced over the side and down at the water as it grew gradually more and more agitated.

There was a slowly growing level of noise, he looked up to see a large crowd of people in front of him, many with video camera's out, all staring at something that James couldn't quite see. He began to force his way through the seething mass of people. The crowd seemed endless, but eventually he pushed through to the front to find two police officers holding back the crowds on both sides. He approached the one nearest him. The officer looked around and James was met by his scaly face, James had to yell to be heard over the massive of noise coming from behind him.

"What's going on?!"

He asked, the officer took a small step towards him and said in an equally loud voice.

"Look up! There's a women sitting on the edge, she's threatened to kill herself we've got our finest negotiator trying to talk her down."

James looked up to see a uniformed mole with a megaphone desperately trying to talk to her, he could catch phrases of, "Think about what you have to live for" and "Think about your family". James gave a small gulp as he quickly realised the futility of his efforts, the dragoness was having none of it, instead just sitting pointedly away from him. James turned to the officer and said again.

"Why don't you just fly up there?! You have wings!"

The officer simply shook his head slowly, saying in a bitter voice.

"Too much wind! You'd need an athlete to fight against these winds, and i'm far from it. Please Sir we have this under control."

But even as the dragon said it, his head dropped slightly. Even he could tell that the mole was doing a bad job of talking her down, James could see it in his eyes. James had an idea, it was crazy and stupid but right then he wasn't thinking straight and all he could think about was the women sitting on the beam.

"Listen!"

He called out to the officer, drawing his attention again.

"Your guy isn't doing anything! Let me help! Please let me talk to her! I swear, I can help!"

The cop looked at him and scoffed a little, before saying in a arrogant tone.

"You?! Your just a monkey! We have this UNDER CONRTOL! What part of that don't you get? Let me guess, your just looking for an excuse to get on camera... typical, all you humans are the same."

But James wasn't paying much attention anymore, he felt that crazy urge within him slowly growing larger, fuelled by the arrogance of the officer, it swelled within him until he subconsciously knew what he was going to do. The crowd gasped and James looked up to see the women shuffling even closer to the edge. He had to act, and the law could go and screw itself.

"I'll show you what a monkey can do!"

He said, in an almost heroic voice. The officer was taken completely by surprise as James instantly dodged past him and began to clamber up the scaffolding. He could hear yells and cries from many people but he didn't care. Slowly he pulled himself up onto the level with the mole cop. He turned around, and gave a squeak of surprise.

"Y-y-you can't be up here!"

He said, but James just ignored him instead yelling at him.

"Get a ladder! I'll talk to her!"

The mole nodded bemusedly and scurried down the scaffolding. But James didn't pay any attention to him, instead focusing all thoughts on the dragoness practically dangling over the edge. The wind was ferocious now, trying to knock James off as he slowly edged his way closer to the dragoness.

"Hey!"

He called out as he edged closer, his heart beat rapidly in his chest as the dragoness slowly turned around. She had an attractive face, but her eyes were red and puffy and her deep blue scales were wet with tears. She stared at James for a minute as he sat down next to her, to him, there was no crowd of people anymore, there were no sirens blaring in the background, it was just him and her sitting there on the beam.

"Windy up here isn't it? I'm James. What's yours?"

He said as casually as he, his years of negotiating kicking in. He didn't want to sound like a negotiator The dragoness just stared at him blankly for a while before saying.

"Katie... my names Katie."

James gave a grin and said in a cheery voice.

"That's a nice name, it's nice to meet you"

The dragoness stared blankly at him still, James just smiled more at her. Slowly she asked in a confused voice.

"Why are you up here? Why aren't you with the rest of your cops buddies?"

James gave a small chuckle before saying.

"I'm not a cop, just a guy with time on his hands..."

He trailed off slightly, but then his voice turned softer and he asked.

"So why are you up here? It's not everyday one decides to sit hundreds of metres up on a metal beam."

The dragoness just spat and looked away, a fresh set of tears began to roll down her face before she said in a harsh voice small bits of smoke beginning to seep out her mouth.

"Why do you care?! You don't understand! My family don't care! My friends don't care! You don't care!! do you?! Tell me honestly!!"

James just kept a cool expression, he waited a moment for the dragoness to calm down before saying in a tender voice.

"I do care... and that's the truth. If I didn't care, I wouldn't have broken the law and climbed up here to talk with you. So please... just tell me what's wrong, I will listen, you have my word"

She looked over the ocean again and James shuffled even closer, She was in arms reach now. The dragoness shuddered slightly as another cold gust of wind swept over them. Slowly James took his jacket off and wrapped it around her. She gave him a confused look, but James just smiled again.

"Thank you... but why?"

She asked in a bemused voice, but James just said bluntly.

"You looked cold... Please tell me what happened, you can get it off your chest. It's obviously hurting you, let me help relieve the pain."

The dragoness looked at him him again and her eyes were brimming again, James gave her a soft smile in return and she suddenly broke down. Through fits of tears she chocked on her

"My... fiancé... that bastard! He left me! He left me for some whore!! I loved him!"

She sobbed violently again and she began to rock dangerous. James felt so sorry for her, he knew her pain, he knew what it was like. Without warning The dragoness suddenly moved and James panicked. He instantly grabbed her shoulders and she screamed at him.

"GET OFF ME!!! GET OFF ME!!!"

"NO!!"

James yelled back, putting all the power he could into his voice. The mix of the days events coming out in a the brutal shout. Katie instantly stopped, she stared with a terrified look in her eyes. James panted a little bit as he vented the anger.

"I'll... only let you go if you promise you'll stay and talk... Only if you promise."

There was a moment of silence as James waited for a reply. Katie let her head drop once more, but there was a whisper of a voice.

"ok..."

James softly let go off her, and she let her shoulders drop. She looked at James with sullen eyes, a depressed look across her face. Miserably, she said.

"Please... just go. Tell them you tried and that i'm sorry. That will make things easier for both of us..."

James shook his head slowly, quietly he reached into his pocket as his voice grew slowly more and more emotional.

"If I go back now, I will have failed. Not only you, but my daughter and myself. I've too much shit in my life to let an opportunity to help some pass by, if that means pushing past a police officer to climb up on some scaffolding well, so be it."

James stopped for a minute and gave a long sigh, he too found himself looking out over the ocean. Patches of sun where beginning to peek through the clouds and the wind began to drop. He looked back up Katie and said in a solemn tone.

"I've lost eveything... my job... my wife... soon my home, but I fight. Why? Because i'm so bloody tired of seeing my little Sarah looking sad and miserable... I don't fight for myself, I fight for her. I know that she will be worse off than any other girl if I go, and no father wants that for there kid."

He slowly pulled out his wallet and opened it, he smiled a little down at the picture in it. The face of his little girl stared happily up at him, he looked up and saw Katie looking at the picture too.

"She's pretty..."

She said quietly, James smiled a little but he began to feel a well of emotion build up inside him. He put the picture away, and suddenly he felt a mix of sadness of anger in his own heart.

"Everytime I look at her... I feel... damn... I fell like i've let her down again, and that is the worst feeling I could ever have. Knowing I let something so precious to me get tarnished and yet..."

He stopped, he gave a small laugh and shook his head. Katie was looking at him with an almost confused look. Slowly James turned to her again with an apologetic look on his face.

"I'm sorry... i'm an idiot... I shouldn't have come up here."

Katie just looked at him with that same mixed expression. Quietly she shuffled closer to James and she said.

"I've always wanted a daughter... with my fiancé, but..."

She started, but James cut her off in a firm yet soft voice.

"But nothing! You still can! You can have a daughter, you can have a family! You can do these things I know it! All you've got to do is fight! You've got to try! Just give life a chance I promise you that things will work! I promise."

James was pleading with her now, his eyes wide wide and begging and his tone was full of desperate emotion. Katie stopped for a minute and said in a fearful voice.

"But... I don't want to be alone."

James face softened and he began to smile warmly at her. There was a moment of silence as they stared into each others eyes. The sun came from behind the clouds and began to shine brightly on them and James gently said.

"You're never alone, whether it's your family, boyfriend or just some loser who's climbed up a bridge to talk. Please... come with me and lets get down from here... if not for me, then for my daughter. I don't want her to find out I've failed again, not again."

Slowly shuffled slightly towards James again, until she was right next to him. Without warning James felt her wrap her arms around him and heard more sobs. Suddenly James found his own arms doing the same and he felt a surge of emotion in him as well. Katie's head was in his chest and she sobbed quietly. James stroked the back of her head softly and he whispered to her.

"It's ok... it's going to be ok"

There was just a minute of silence where they just hugged. They forgot they were dangerously high up, they forgot that the eyes of the city were on them, they forgot about species and everything. Instead all they cared about right them was just holding onto the other, each just content with finding comfort in the others contact. Eventually Katie said in barely more than a whisper.

"Please... please promise me that we can talk if we get down... I just need someone right now, I just need to talk."

James felt her give him another small squeeze and for some reason, he enjoyed it. He couldn't help but feel that is was his duty to help this women, he didn't care about the fact she was a dragon, something deep inside him pushed him to say in a tender tone.

"You have my word. Come on, as much as I enjoy the view, I think it's best we get down."

He felt a small nod form Katie, and together, James guided them to the mole officer waiting on top of a ladder. There was an eruption of noise as they descended. Cheers echoed out from everywhere, and James felt a little bubble of pride. Quietly Katie was bundled into a police car, avoiding the multitude of camera crews. James felt a tap on his shoulder and he spun around to see the officer from before looking at him.

"You broke three laws by pulling that stunt, I really should have you arrested."

He stopped for a second and James wondered what he was going to do, but the cop smiled at him and said in a cheery voice.

"But thanks for getting her down, I guess you humans aren't that bad after."

Slowly the officer stretched out a hand and James shook it, giving him a wide grin. But before he could reply, he heard a yell. He looked around to see another dragon cop walking up to him.

"The lady wants you to come with her! Says she needs someone to talk to! And we need you at the station for questioning!"

James turned back to the first cop, he just nodded at the other officer before saying.

"Go on, I'm not going to arrest you for saving someone's life. But any other time a catch you pulling a stunt like that I'm gonna have to take you in, got that?"

James gave a small nod, but then he heard a tap on his shoulder and he turned around to see the second cop beckoning to him. Quietly, avoiding the news reporters and civilians alike, James to clambered into the back of the police car. Before being whisked away, sirens blazing.

Please give me some feedback on it, so i can make changes or if it's really bad get rid of it. Also should i continue it or isn't it worth it? please tell me.

Thanks!
