Division 42, Ch. 4: Rescue

After driving around for what felt like hours, we finally came up to a building that DJ believed had Rena in it. We stopped and looked at the tall building. It really looked like a skyscraper that should be in a huge city, but it was in the middle of the desert. Weird.

Anyway, we had stopped a few hundred yards away so as to not set anything off while we discussed battle plans. Some thought that we could split up, cover more ground. While that was the obvious answer, I decided to not go that route. For one thing, there might be creatures more dangerous than Hunters and I don't want anyone to get hurt. So, we decided to stay together, using DJ as our guide to find Rena.

First, we needed to get inside. I had Zekrom and the rest to scout around for anyway inside. Me and Dash past the time by getting to know each other. We liked certain things and disliked others. After some time, we came to be close friends.

Zekrom and the others came back with reports of a door that was unguarded that would be perfect for sneaking in. I had a bad feeling about this, but didn't voice it.

We found the door, unguarded like they said. All of us entered in, but it was dark and quiet. As soon as all of us entered, the door closed and locked. When the lights came on, we were surrounded, but it wasn't the regular guards that attacked the Hub. I cursed myself, seeing Brutes and Elites with Energy Swords, Spike Rifles, Gravity Hammers, Concussion Rifles, and a whole lot of other deadly Covenant weapons. They said something in their alien language that I didn't understand, but I didn't care. I needed to save Rena, but these bastards are in the way. I smiled and said, "This'll be fun..."

***

With everyone not holding back, the fight lasted a couple of minutes. I fired round after round into their heads, amazed at my headshot accuracy. I looked and saw that Dash was doing okay. Using the watch shield that I told him about from the Percy Jackson series that I read, he blocked plasma and needles while using his speed to take them down, kicking and scratching and using a long, sharp knife that I didn't know he had. I saw Zekrom using Dragon- and Electric-type moves like Dragon Claw and Thunder to take down his opponents. While everyone was doing fine on their own, I had to focus on what's in front of me. I had two Zealot class Elites, both dual-wielding Energy Swords while I had nothing but my knife. All I thought was Man, sucks to be those guys.

They both ran at me, which was a big mistake, and swung at the same time. I dodge, while the Energy Swords clashed together and got tangled. While the Elites tried to dislodge them, I ran and jumped high, punching one Elite and kicked the other, causing them to lose balance and fall. I grabbed their other, untangled Energy Swords and, while they were about to get up, struck them right through their chests with enough force to the sword to peak out the other side. They were dead in a couple of seconds.

I was about to get up when I felt an Energy Sword at the back of my neck. I turned and saw another Elite, wearing a most unusual armor. Before I could react, it swung down at me.

***

DJ felt the sense of danger, turned to see Chris about to be sliced by an Elite. He ran, ignoring the battle raging around him. When he got close, he lunged at the Elite, tackling it to the ground. They rolled around, trying to get possession of the Energy Sword. Chris was about to help, when he felt a hand on his neck and it clenched down, choking the life out of him.

DJ turned to see Chris squirming against the grip of a Zealot Elite, Energy Sword still in his chest but losing a lot of blood. He said something that DJ couldn't understand but he got the message either way.

Stand down or he dies.

DJ was about to stand down when he noticed the Elite he was fighting earlier start to run towards the Zealot. In a matter of seconds, the Zealot was on the ground, sword through his neck and Chris in the arms of the Elite.

Chris struggled against the Elite but it spoke, "Don't struggle. You need you're strength."

DJ was amazed that the Elite spoke, and was understandable. It spoke with a feminine tone, so DJ thought the Elite was a woman. Now that the battle was over, DJ noticed the Elite more closely. She had an hourglass figure, her armor complementing her features. Her hair was cut short and wrapped in a ponytail. Her mouth was different to the other Elites. While the other Elites had a set of upper and lower mandibles, she had a more human mouth.

DJ was about to walk over and help Chris to his feet when he stopped dead in his tracks at what he saw. The Elite took off his helmet and was kissing him.

***

_ OK, this is weird_ I thought, feeling her lips pressed against mine. Her tongue was trying to gain entrance into my mouth, but I wouldn't let her, still freaked out at what was happening. She relented, smiling down at me, and put me down.

"Heh, I take it you're not used to kissing, aren't ya?" she asked.

"No, I have experienced kissing," I said, "just not being kissed by an Elite that could kill me in one well-placed punch."

She laughed, "Funny and handsome, I like that in a male. My name's Ishi." She held out a hand to me, expecting me to shake the three fingered hand, which I did.

After introductions were made, she agreed to help us save Rena on one condition, she take her with me. Knowing that this would be a bad idea, I reluctantly agreed, knowing that another ally would help.

***

Soon, we left the room and went into another room similar to the last one. The door closed and we were in total darkness, again.

When the lights came on, I was surprised to see that there was nothing but a white room. I was looking around for an exit when I heard a voice. Her voice.

"Hello, and welcome to one of the Enrichment Centers here at The Facility. We're always looking for new volunteers and today is our lucky day. Just complete these simple tests and you can leave."

"Oh," said Dash, "Sounds easy enough." He walks forward, but I put my hand in the way before he could fall into the moat that appeared before us.

"Don't underestimate her. She just wants to kill us just like those Brutes and Elites from before," I said.

"Who is she?" Dash asked.

"She.... is GLaDOS," I said, "A supercomputer so sadistic that she puts test subjects through rigorous tests that could kill you for the sake of 'science'."

"Then what do we do?" Ishi asked.

"We play her game," I said, pulling out my Portal gun and started shooting portals.

***

During the course, passing spike plates, turrets, Discouragement Beams, and anything else that GLaDOS put up in our way, we found someone else on the test track. He was around 5'6", with bulging muscles from years of working out. He had jet black hair and was holding a Portal gun in one hand and had a Pokéball in the other.

"So," I called out, scaring the kid, "you a Pokémon trainer?"

He turned to look at me. "Yeah. What's it to ya?"

"What're you doing here?" I asked.

"I'm doing this to join this organization. I heard that they're the best and that's what I aim to be."

"Come on, kid," I said, trying to reason with him, "They're evil. They took someone from me and they want to take over the world."

"So?" he countered, "I just want to be the best. I don't care about good or evil, just the best."

"Look," I said, getting annoyed at this, "you're in the way. We need to get out of here so I can rescue someone. Please move."

"Or what?" he asked, crossing his arms as best as he could, while giving me a smug smile.

"Listen, kid," I said, seriously getting ticked by all of this, "I don't wanna battle you, but I will if I have to."

"Alright, let's do it," he said.

"What?" I asked.

"Battle," he said, taking his Pokéball and throwing it up in the air. When it was at its peak, the ball opened and a flash of bright, white light was pouring out of the ball. The light was beginning to take shape, forming into a bipedal creature. Soon, the light vanished and there, in front of me, was a Zoroark. It, basically, looked like a fox. A black and red fox, with a long mane of hair, wrapped in a ponytail with a blue bead. It looked at me, smiling.

"Why?" I asked.

"Two reasons," he said, "One, if you beat me, I'll let you go and two, I wanna see who is the best between us."

"Fine, if it'll make you happy," I said, fed up at this, "DJ, are you ready?"

As if to answer, he was already in front of me, in a battle stance. He looked at me and nodded.

"Awesome, let's battle. Silver, Night Slash!" the kid said, while the Zoroark sprinted up to DJ, claws swirling in inky blackness.

"DJ, dodge and use Aura Sphere!" I yelled.

DJ jumped high in the air and, using his aura, charged up his Aura Sphere. When it was fully charged, he came back down and pushed the sphere into Silver's chest. The resulting explosion caused both Pokémon to be sent back towards their trainers. Silver was heaving and wincing in pain, ribs probably broken. DJ looked alright, but I felt from him some mild discomfort throughout his whole body, probably from the force of the Aura Sphere back on his body.

"Silver, you okay?" the kid asked.

"Yes, Jake, I'm fine," Silver said, the tone indicating it was female.

"Alright," said Jake, "use Shadow Ball!"

She charged up all of her Dark energy into a ball and rushed at DJ.

When she got close, I shouted, "DJ, use Force Palm!"

DJ's hand started to glow and, when Silver was close enough to strike down on him, raised his hand to knock the Shadow Ball out of Silver's hand and cause the ball to hit the wall.

Silver was staying where she was, not moving even though I saw she was trying to. She was paralyzed.

I took my chance and said, "Let's finish this. Use Focus Blast."

DJ stood where he was, concentrating on what was in between his hands. Soon, a dark blue ball of energy formed and he fired at Silver when it reached its peak. Silver had nowhere to run and took the full blast, sending her back and knocking her unconscious. The battle was over.

Jake rushed over, taking Silver in his arms. I rushed over and checked her over. She had a couple of broken ribs and a broken wrist. I looked towards Mew and told her to come over and heal her. When she floated over and heal her. She stood back up and stretched out her limbs, making sure everything was working.

Jake looked at me and asked, "Why? Why did you heal her? She's the enemy."

I took off my helmet, letting him see my face, the seriousness upon it, and said, "She is your friend, probably the only one in this place. She's all you have. I have to make sure it stays that way, so you don't have to have the heartbreak that I have over Rena. In order to fill it, I need to rescue her and make sure she's safe with me forever. Don't thank me. Just get out of this hellhole because I know they wouldn't care at all at what happens to you or her. They'll find another replacement. They always do."

With that I turned to the exit, but I was held back by a firm hand. I turned to the kid, Jake, with his hand on me and a look of determination on his face.

"Listen," he said, "I don't care about anything except two things: Silver and being the best. With you, I could probably achieve both. So, I'm coming with you."

I was about to protest, saying it was too dangerous, until I looked at his eyes. I saw that he wasn't going to change his mind. I sighed, saying, "Fine, you can come."

He got up and turned to Silver, helping her up. Silver turned to me and bowed. "Thank you for sparing us," she said.

"No one else would," I replied.

We all turned toward the exit, with new allies joining our ranks in order to save Rena.

***

We reached GLaDOS, narrowly dodged more turrets, using gels, and with the added Portal gun from Jake, finished in record time. We were about to destroy her when I noticed something odd.

"Wait," I said, looking at her more closely.

"What do you mean?" asked Dash. "She forced us to go through that-that "testing course" for "science". She's nothing but a sadistic-"

"Hold up!" I yelled over Dash, staring at GLaDOS. I noticed that her design was similar to someone. Someone that I knew for only a short time. It hit me.

"Do you know a computer named Zeta?" I asked, "I think you might be related to her."

"Why would you say that?" asked Dash. "She's nothing like her."

GLaDOS spoke, "Yes, I know her. We were both prototypes for a new company computer. We were basically the same, but they chose her over me. While she was doing what she was designed to do, I was rotting and left for dead in the storage closet, until he found me. She was basically MY SISTER, but they took her away and left me to DIE in that horrible closet. Do you know the biggest lesson that I learned from all of this? It's that you CAN'T TRUST ANYONE, even the people that built you. And now you'll die a slow, horrible, painful death."

She armed herself with rockets and bombs. Before she launched her rockets at us, I said, "I know where Zeta is!"

She paused, then recollected herself. "You're lying!"

I pulled off my glove and shoved my fist in her face, showing the ring I got from here. GLaDOS stopped and looked at it and if computers could stare wide-eyed at this ring, then that's what GLaDOS was doing.

"Wait, I know this ring. My sister made it and told me to keep it, before they took her and I never saw her again. I lost it when, in a fit of rage, I threw it against a wall and was then locked in the closet. I never saw this again. How did you get this?"

"Zeta gave it to me, on my first day as Caretaker," I said.

"Oh, you're the Caretaker that everyone was talking about. Well, if you know where Zeta is, tell me before I blast you!" she threatened, holding her rockets towards my body.

"She's where I work. I can take you to her, if you want. You can finally be reunited with your sister after being away for so long. Please, let me help you," I said, still holding out the ring.

After a few tense minutes of her silently deliberating with herself, her rockets were lowered and disarmed. She stood still and powered down. I stepped back as a small panel rose from the floor. It beeped for a few moments before a disc popped out from the panel. I took it and took off my helmet, looking for a slot to put it in. As I was going through, I found it and put the disc inside and put on my helmet. Immediately, I heard her voice saying, "Glad you found the slot. Now take me to my sister, now!"

"Patience, GLaDOS. First, we have to find someone and take her back. Then, we'll go and see your sister."

Before she responded, I ran to the exit. Apparently, we were already at the top floor where I hoped Rena was.

I ran towards a set of double doors and immediately felt a dark presence. I knew what that dark presence was angry that this bastard planned for all of this to happen. He wrecked my home, tried to kill my friends, and kidnapped Rena. He didn't deserve any pity. He deserved to die.

I burst through the doors and looked around. I saw that I was in a huge office, two walls filled with books and knickknacks. The wall opposite of me was a huge window that overlooked the desert and I could see mountains in the horizon. In front of the window was a huge desk, papers placed haphazardly all over the top. Behind the desk was a leather chair and in the chair was him.

I ran forward, aiming to kill him right here and how, but was knocked back by an unseen force. Before I got up and ran again, I saw Rena in a corner, locked up in a huge cage.

"RENA!!" I cried out, hoping she was alive.

At first, she didn't respond. She didn't move. I couldn't believe it. I was too late.

I fell to my knees and hung my head in defeat, then I heard moaning and shuffling coming from the cage. I looked up and saw Rena trying to stand up and raise her head. When she did, I saw her eyes and saw that they still held the same radiance that I knew she had. I felt better, but not much. She was still hurt and if she didn't get treatment, she could die.

I turned to see that he was standing up, gloating at me over the apparent victory. I yelled at him, "You bastard. You dare hurt her? You motherfuc-"

"Now, now," the man said, "temper, temper. You wouldn't want to say anything in front of the children, now would you?"

"Children?" I puzzled out loud. That's when I heard the sound of wings flapping. I looked up to see a white figure coming down from the sunroof that I missed before. It crashed through, sending glass everywhere. I instinctively raised my arms to protect myself and waited for the glass rain to clear. When the last pane of glass fell, I looked to see a sight that I thought I would never see again.

"Sister?" Zekrom asked, seeing Reshiram, the Vast White Pokémon, before him, looking like her picture but with the same predicament as Zekrom. She was around my height, had five fingers at the edge of her wings but everything else was the same.

But that wasn't what shocked me. Honestly, I would've been happy that there was another legendary here. Any legendary, for that matter. Hell, I would've taken Arceus. But, of course, fate had different plans for me.

I missed her deeply. I believed her to be dead after so long. I would stare at her picture for countless hours, remembering our times together, both good and bad. But her being her, it couldn't have been right? She was dead, right? Right? But, here she was, right in front of me.

My sister, Kate.

And, boy, did she look pissed.
