Superiority

Chapter 3

Sirens were blaring everywhere.

"I have one chance for this." Thought Louis.

"Just wait until they open the door."

A phrase he had turned over in his mind more times than he cared to count. The riot began just as was planned, with the sole intention of his escape. Louis was a prisoner in a Lupine terrorist detention facility. A rarity, he scored enough bonus points to overcome his terrorist handicap. But that did not give him his freedom.

Freedom.

He could almost taste it. But the situation weighed heavy in his heart. He will be the only one to taste freedom tonight.

The riot had been planned by fellow American-Human Rebellion members. "Human." he thought.

Oh, how he wanted to be human again. These filthy animals had taken his freedom, and he was about to steal it back.

The whole riot was planned for him to be able to get back to the rebellion. To assist them in the overthrow of these filthy animals.

How dare they! How dare they consider themselves better than his kind!

He could smell the guards coming. A trait about his new self that disgusted him.

The other former humans carelessly tossed over tables, and banged on the windows. Anything that could get the guards to come in. They were inching closer to the door.

Louis went over the floor plans in his head again, he had memorized every twist, and turn in this wretched place.

The guards were almost here.

He could hear them now.

He shouldn't be able to hear them. It still disgusted him that becoming one of these beasts heightened his senses, gave him an advantage.

A temporary gift he would use against them.

The prisoners were close to the door, but not suspiciously close.

The guards are almost here. Six of them. They underestimate him.

And suddenly, it happened.

The doors burst open, according to plan. There was a flurry of paws, an- NO! Not paws! Hands! He had been one so long he was starting to fit in, that made him sick to his stomach.

They had been apprehended. This won't last long. As the prisoners distracted the guards, Louis silently darted out the door. But wait! The supply closet. He ducked into it, just before the H-block guard passed the corner. The smell of wolves was everywhere, He wouldn't notice him in here.

Louis was as still as he had ever been, if he moved the guard would hear him, and all would be lost.

Not now, he told himself, he had been holding his breath for well over a minute. The guard finally passed the corner. "Now the dangerous part." He told himself.

The mess hall, and the lobby were connected by a short tunnel. Both infested by guards. At least most of the mess hall guards were in the G-block. After waiting for what seemed like forever, the two remaining mess hall guards turned their backs on him. He could faintly hear their conversation.

"You think those guys need help?" Asked the first guard. Obviously concerned. "Nah, it's almost over. Those rebel pricks are already starting to back down. It won't be long."

Louis was halfway across the room.

"I'm gonna go check on them, anyway."

Louis' heart skipped a beat. He jumped under a table without a sound, just in time to see the guards flashlight shine above him. "Did you hear that?" Whimpered the first guard. "Yeah, let's check it out." Said the second.

Louis held his breath again, slowly pulling his makeshift knife from the pocket of his jumpsuit.

Just in case.

A loud bang. A table just flipped over.

Remain absolutely calm. It was only a matter of time. They were flipping the tables over. "I'll go for the big one first." Thought Louis. That way he only had to fight the small one without the element of surprise. Maybe, if he stayed quiet he wouldn't alert the other guards.

He gripped his knife tighter out of fear.

Three tables away.

Bang. Two tables away.

His hand started to bleed from the exposed blade. They would smell it soon.

Bang. One table away.

"Help!" A shout came from G-block. The guards instantly abandoned him to help with the riot. Louis had never felt so relieved. Hesitantly he moved ever so slowly out from under the table. The guards were on high alert. That wasn't good. And within a second he was next to the lobby.

Seven. Seven! There were seven guards in the lobby. None of them looked like they were moving anytime soon.

He hadn't planned for this. He looked all around him for another way out. He couldn't use the fire exit. That would alert them.

Alert them!

Louis hid in a dark corner behind a trash can, and stretching his hand far, he pushed the fire exit open. Suddenly the prisoner danger alarm turned off, in favor of a fire alarm. The sprinklers turned on. It was a chaotic sight. Alarms blaring, lights flashing, vision nearly lost in a dense spray of water.

Seven figures exited the lobby.

Perfect. There were people screaming everywhere, trying to find the source of the fire, or a way out. No one noticed Louis slip silently out the front door.

But he was not free yet. There were three guard towers in the front half of the prison. Luckily, only one was manned. No one expects you to break out the front door.

Louis had already resigned himself to what he had to do.

He was at the top of the ladder, he peered into the tower. The fat bastard wasn't even watching the security feed. He had a computer, and was streaming some talk show. He had headphones on. Perfect.

He went down loud. A little too loud for Louis. He was nervous, even though he knew the guards inside were preoccupied. Killing that filthy beast felt good, especially killing him in the name of freedom.

Freedom.

So close. The alarm changed. He couldn't hear screaming anymore. Just growling, and the pounding of feet. The alarm terrified him. He had heard it before.

The escapee alarm.

Louis grabbed both sides of the ladder and slid down, completely ignoring the rungs. He winced at the pain from the wound on his hand, but shook it off. He was on the other side of the fence.

So close. He could see the headlights of the getaway car.

Faster than he had ever run before he grabbed the handle.

The small boy in the back gasped in fear. "Calm down, Mikey." said the driver. The human driver.

Human.

"A few hitches, but nothing I couldn't overcome." Said Louis.

"At least you're here." said the driver. "You look like shit by the way."

"Thanks." Replied Louis.

"Now drive, I want to get out of here."

The driver handed Louis a beer. "To freedom!" said the driver.

"To freedom." replied Louis.

Freedom.
