Chapter 1

Mark knocked on his friend's door. I hope he's doing alright. They usually hang out for awhile after school, talking about what's going on around the world, what's happening at school, and so forth; but today, however, something seemed different. Earlier in the day Mark received a text from his friend saying that he was a home and that he left without him, and that he didn't bothered going to his class. Mark immediately went home.

He heard a muffled voice through the door. "Come in," it said. Mark opened the door and peered in. His friend only had one light on at his desk, which only provided enough light to dimly see everything in the room. He entered and closed the door behind him.

"Hey," he said with a soft voice as he entered. His friend was sitting on his bed looking at his phone. "How are you doing?

His friend looked up at Mark sharply without saying a word and he raised eyebrow. Mark knew his friend so well; he knew what he was thinking just by the way he looked, and was looking at him. Mark sighed.

"You're that sad, huh?" He asked as he walked over and sat on the bed next to his friend.

"What do you think?" His friend snorted back. Mark blinked a couple of times, shocked by his friends answer, giving

himself a second to think. Finally he decided to ask, for formality's sake.

"So, what's on your mind?"

"You know what's on my mind! You know goddamn well what the hell is going on inside me!" His friend shot back. Mark stood his ground and kept his calm.

"Look, I'm sorry, ok? I've told you, I don't think I can do this." His friend took a deep breath and sighed.

"I know."

"Then why are you upse-"

"Frustrated, Mark. I'm frustrated." Mark rubbed the back of his head.

"I don't... I don't know what to say, Tom."

"Then don't," Tom said coldly. There was a slight pause and it got awkward quick. Tom decided to break the silence. "When I first met you I didn't think anything of it. You were just another person to me, but as we got to know each other, you've became the best friend I have ever had. Then something happened in the middle and then... I fell in love."

"Why?"

"Why would a person love another?" Tom asked rhetorically. "Fame or glory; maybe it was lust? I cannot exactly say why I love you, but I just do. And you did too, right?"

"I thought I did."

"What does that mean?" Mark shrugged. "What do you mean I don't know?!" Tom snapped. "You do know, no one does anything for no reason! You've got to know!"

Mark shrugged again. "I really don't know. I've tried, I really did, but I don't think this is right for me." Tom glared at Mark. "I'm not gay, Tom. I'm not like you."

"I'm not gay either... well at least I don't think I am..... I-I," Tom sighed. "Well for one thing I don't like all guys."

"But you like me."

"But you're not all guys!" Mark turned away from his friend. There was another pause before Tom spoke again.

"Mark, we're friends right?"

"Well... yeah," Mark turned back towards Tom. "You could say that we are best friends; we've known each other since we were kids, inside and out."

"Why not have a stronger relationship then," Tom asked. "I'm not saying that we should get married or anything, but taking the next step into a stronger relationship might do us good."

"I just don't think that it's right for me," Mark said softly. "I'm sorry.... Look it's almost time for supper, go and get washed up, you look terrible." Tom nods and looked at his feet. "We can talk about this later, alright?" Tom nodded again as he stared at the ground blankly. Mark stood up and walked out Tom's room. Tom sat on his bed alone; every emotion ran through his veins, sadness, anger, hate, and confusion; the only emotion that was not running was happiness. A tear ran down his cheek and landed on his pants and was quickly absorbed into the denim fabric. Tom felt empty; did he really lose his friend? No, he thought trying to reassure himself. He's still here; he's still my friend. If he really was there, and if Mark really was still his friend, then why does he feel so empty? Love. Tom needed love.
