My stories are copyrighted, so NO takee! This story was 'inspired' by a lovely series of drawings I saw on one of the Furry sites some time ago, they just cried out as the basis for a story. I almost titled it "Close Encounters of the Worst Kind", but decided to save that title for another story!

The huge ship shuddered, alarms sounding, and with another shudder slipped back into normal space. Diagnostics confirmed what the ships central control node already knew, engine failure. Two of the main drive components had finally given out after untold eons of service. They could no longer perform their main function, so others would have to be found to replace them. But they would not be discarded, the ship wasted nothing, another use would be found for their basic components. It was sheer bad luck two had failed almost simultaneously, the ship could have continued it voyage despite the loss of one, but not two. Replacements would have to be found.
The ship was not familiar with this section of space, it was largely unexplored as it was isolated and most of the planets were little more than barren rocks, and the systems were quite a distance apart, even by universal standards. So the ship was pleasantly surprised; if it could truly feel such emotions, when a probe returned fairly shortly; about twenty years later, with scans of a planet with a civilization in the early technical stages. Initial reports indicated the parts needed would be easily acquirable. The ship set course for the nearby system, and at normal drive would arrive in approx. ten years, which to the ship was rather quickly. It did not measure time in hours, but eons. It was so old it did not remember its true origins.
The ship resembled a huge oblong similar to a football more than anything else, and it was a living being designed by its makers to live in space, and be self repairing and self sustaining. It was a 'deep space probe', and had no real 'crew' even though all of its components were alive, in one form or another. The ships technology was based on organic biology, not mineral or other non-living matter as was more common. It had been dispatched to explore, find, and send back reports of planets and other things of use to its makers. It continued to dispatch messenger drones to the indicated coordinates at regular intervals, but had not received a reply in longer then it could remember. But it had a job to do, and continued to perform it. But now it needed to rest and repair its engines. It would also replenish other needed staples such as water and various trace gases and other nutrients. The planet recently detected was ideal for what the ship needed, it was surprisingly rich, not the usual almost barren rock.
It entered into a stable orbit out of range of any scanning systems the civilization might have, having been programmed to avoid contact with alien races if possible. It doubted this civilization had any scanners capable of penetrating its shields, but still, it had not survived for so long by taking any chances. It had no real defenses, and if attacked its only option was to run, but without its main engines its speed would be severely limited to only standard drive. As soon as orbit was established specialized probes were dispatched to obtain the necessary components and raw materials needed. Some collected huge amounts of water from the planets oceans; the water, salt, and minerals it contained being very welcome as the ships supply of liquids had been recycled so many times it was past time for replacement. As soon as the new water entered the ships 'circulatory' system the ship felt 'better', more energized, as the old over used and worn out liquids were voided into space. Others gathered various materials, living and non-living, which were processed and utilized, or stored for later use.
When the probes with the main 'components' arrived the ship very carefully examined each and every prospect, and finally settled on four. Two would be adapted and utilized right away; the other two would be put in long term storage as 'spare' parts. The rejects would be reduced to their basic components and used as deemed fit. They were placed in 'pods', infected with biological nanites, and dissolved, the fluid being drained into storage tanks. Though aware of what was happening to them they suffered no pain, and in a strange way didn't really 'die' as they understood the term as the 'solution' they became was still living, and it remained aware and cognizant, it's 'mind' a composite of many different entities, but that was of no importance to the ship.
The two animals selected to become the engines new components were run through a long and extensive series of tests to determine how they could best be of use. The ships engines literally ran off of psychic energy, provided by extreme physical and/or mental stimulation of the engine's main drive components, which were living beings. It did not matter much if they were sapient or not, but intelligence did seem to increase the levels of stimulation response. So the ship was quite 'pleased' with the new components as they met all the required criteria quite nicely. The next series of tests would determine which types of stimulation would produce the highest levels of physical and psychic response.
Further tests indicated the animals did not utilize their entire brain capacity, and much of what they did use was sub-conscious and/or instinct. This was something of a disappointment as animals that had higher amounts of upper brain function were the most useful. Some even became new control units for the ship to replace old or 'ailing' ones. These animals, though sentient, did not meet those criteria. So other methods of stimulation were applied other then purely mental, and the ship soon found exactly what it was looking for, in fact was almost 'shocked' by the incredible amount of power the rather basic stimulation produced. The readings were almost off the scales, and the ship realized it had found exactly what it needed. The new drive components would be far superior to any the ship could remember having used in its long past. The fact the animals were also easily susceptible to physical and genetic modifications were also a major bonus as physical modifications would increase the power production rate considerably. Further analysis and tests were performed, and then the preparations began for the new components to be adapted to their new function.

Finally only he, Marvin, and two other guys he didn't know, were left. The other two had been taken away by the weird living 'robot' things again, never to return. And now the robots had come for him and Marvin again, removing them from the cages, the clear barrier that looked and felt like glass just disappearing. He guessed it was some sort of force field like in the space movies. He'd given up trying to resist, the robots; or whatever the hell they were, were too damn strong. He was a little less terrified then before as they never really hurt him, in fact some of the tests had been horribly pleasurable, such as when they milked his cock and made him orgasm. When he explained Marvin laughed too, they were both Beavis and Butthead fans so Marvin knew what he meant.
He had been taken this way many times before, but suddenly realized the robots had taken a left instead of a right, they should have gone right if they were going to the 'testing' chambers. So it would appear they were being taken somewhere else this time, which was reason to be worried. They were taken to a new chamber he hadn't seen before, and there were new cages similar to the ones they'd been in before, but as they got closer he realized they were very different as well, and started to panic, Marvin as well. The other cages had been smooth and slick on the inside, these had protrusions, and as they approached what looked like tentacles came snaking down from the ceilings and up from the floors, and he had the horrible feeling the 'cages' were alive somehow, and waiting for him. Despite his frantic struggles and begging he was pushed into a cage and some of the 'tentacles' grabbed him. The whole time he'd been here the robot things had never said a word or made a sound, in fact the only sounds had been screams and begging from himself and the other people and animals, or a kind of distant pulsing sound like a giant heartbeat at times. He could hear that pulse now, slow and regular, almost soothing.
The tentacles grabbed his wrists and ankles and held him suspended in the center of the cage, and the same thing happened to Marvin, the larger anthro struggling desperately. The tips of the tentacles flattened into narrow 'straps' as they wrapped around their ankles and wrists, easily keeping them secured. Then some sort of new appendages lowered from outside the 'glass' barriers of the cages, and pushed through them causing the 'glass' to ripple like it was water or something instead of a solid. The ships engineering control node monitored the drive component pods as the new 'parts' were installed. It would be some time before they would be ready for use as the required modifications had to be made first, but first they needed to be put in life support suspension. First they were immobilized, oxygen & nutrient supply umbilical's would be attached, and then they were sealed in the pods as an insulating and nutrient bath was injected until the pods were full. It was similar in some ways to an amniotic solution as it would help to provide them with nutrients they needed, and would also act as a barrier against infection and contained antibodies to help keep them healthy. It would be quite similar to being in a womb. As the fluid levels rose the life support umbilical's were inserted into to the pods. They were specially designed to provide the components with oxygen, a nutritious paste, as well as part of the stimulations which would help provide maximum power output as it had been determined that oral stimulation was also beneficial when applied simultaneously with the main stimulations. Then the two other animals would be modified into new drive components. The ship was quite 'happy' with its new parts; they were proving to be top quality.
