I Found Luck

By: D. C. Henry ("Ahndeleck")

Little One came home and felt like crying. She wanted to have fun all day long. All day she had been unlucky. First she tried to play tag with the butterflies, but a big mean old bee scared all the butter flies away. Then she tried to play a game with the fishes of the river, but all of them were sick today and wouldn't play with her. On the way home, she fell into the river and got all wet. It had been a terribly unlucky day.

Little One went to her mother. Her mother was always lucky. She needed her help to find some luck.

"Mother," Little One said through her tears, "I tried to go out and play today, but I was chased by a bee, could not find my fish friends, and fell in the river. Can you please help me find luck Mother?"

"Oh Little One," Her mother said, "of course I will help you find luck. Where should we start? What is the luckiest thing you can think of?"

"You think we can find a rabbit's shoe? Those are very lucky."

"Maybe we can." Little One's mother said, "Let us go talk with Mother Rabbit and see if she has a spare shoe just for you."

So they said goodbye to Little One's father, and flew all the way to Mother Rabbit's house far in the wood. Mother Rabbit stood outside watching all her little bunnies play in her front yard. Little One and her mother came to the yard and said hello to all the little bunnies.

"Hello Mother Rabbit," Little One's Mother said, "all your little bunnies look like they are having a good time."

"Oh they are," Mother Rabbit said to Little One's Mother, "why are you visiting today?"

"For me." Little One said, "I'm looking for some luck."

"Mother Rabbit," Little One's mother said, "do you have any extra shoes for my Little One?"

"Oh," Mother Rabbit said, "I am so very sorry to you both. I do not have a single shoe to spare. All my little bunnies need them to run and play outside. I am very sorry."

Since Little One had no luck finding a rabbit's shoe, she and her mother decided to look for luck somewhere else. Little One heard that horse shoes could bring luck too. Little One thought about how big a horse shoe was, and did not like the idea very much. Even though she did not like it, she asked her mother to help her find one, because she needed luck so badly.

They flew a long way out into the fields searching for the herd of horses. Soon they found them, running and playing in the fields. When they finally caught up to them, Little One's mother went to the big stallion father of the herd.

"Hello Father Horse," Little One's mother said, "do you have any shoes Little One can have?"

"Why, my shoes are much to large for her small feet." Father Horse said, "Why do you need my shoes?"

"I am so unlucky." Little One said, "I can not find any friends to play with. I need some luck to be able to have fun."

Father Horse shook his head slowly, "I am sorry Little One. I do not have any extra shoes left."

"Oh please Father Horse," Little one begged, "I really need luck, or I will not find my friends or have any fun at all. Can you please spare just one shoe? That is all I need, I promise."

"Now Little One," her mother scolded, "if he doesn't have any he can give us, that's alright. We will just have to find luck somewhere else. Now where else could we find luck?"

Little One sat on the ground and thought. She tried imagining all the different things that might give luck, but could not think of a way to get any of them. Finally tears came to her eyes and she collapsed against her mother.

"Oh mother," Little One said, "I can not think of a single thing I can do. Where could I ever find luck now?"

"Come with me Little One," her mother said, "I've got just the thing hidden away in a secret place of mine. Follow me to my hidden valley."

They flew for a long way. Little One was surprised when they passed their home, and kept going deeper into the forest. Her mother's secret hidden valley hid far beyond where Little One was allowed to go. When they reached it, Little One was amazed at how beautiful the little valley was. It was filled with green and felt fresh and new.

"Oh mother," Little One said, "This is so pretty. But I do not see any luck here, where do you keep your luck?"

Her mother dashed to one side of the valley, and then the other. She looked all over the ground, then shook her head. Then her mother would dash to another spot and look through the grass and clovers. Then her mother stopped and picked something from the ground and held it up to the sky.

"Here Little One," her mother cried triumphantly, "I found luck!"

Little One danced all around her mother, she could not wait to see what her mother had found. When her mother let her see it, Little One was confused.

"Mother," Little One said, "it is only a leaf. How does a leaf give me luck?"

"This," her mother explained, "is a four leaf clover Little One. It is said if you hold one, you will have good luck. I found one a long time ago, and I have had good luck ever since."

Little One was excited and took the clover from her mother. She felt lucky already.

"Now Little One," her mother said, "we should go home. It will be bed time for you when we get back. Then tomorrow you can go out and try to see just how much luck you have."

They both flew home. Little One's mother made the four leaf clover into a little necklace to wear. With the pretty necklace, Little One went to bed and dreamed of all the fun she would have tomorrow. When she woke up the next day, she was ready to go out and play.

She ate her breakfast and ran out the door as soon as she could. Little One found all her butterfly friends, and they played hide and seek. Then she found all her fish friends, and they had fun races until it was lunch time. Then on the way back to home, Little One did not even fall into the river. She had such a great time. On the way back home she even thought of new games she could play after lunch.

When she got home, her mother stood waiting for her.

"Did you have a good time Little One?" her mother asked.

"Yes mother," Little One said, "I had so much fun. I had so much luck I even won in all the games we played."

Her mother held up the necklace with the four leaf clover. Little One saw she had forgotten to bring it with her. Her mother laughed and gave Little One the necklace.

"Mother," Little One said, "how come I had such good luck? I did not have my clover. Where did my luck come from today?"

"Oh Little One," Her mother gave her a hug, "you have your own luck when you want it. You always have luck. When you think you have good luck you make it for yourself."

"How do I do that mother?" Little One asked.

"When you wake up in the morning," her mother said, "tell yourself that you will have good luck today. If you find some bad luck, tell yourself that you will make god luck the rest of the day."

From that day on, Little One told herself she would have good luck no matter what. Even when she had bad days, she would keep telling herself that she would make more good luck later. Whenever she did that, her luck would always start to change.

The End.
