This is a story about a 19 year old college freshman.

Mike had been drinking, like he usually did on the weekends. It was getting late and the fun was winding down so he decided to simply browse the internet and wait for his roommate to get back. He jumped a little at the sound of his phone receiving a text message. It was his roommate; he was staying at his girlfriends place for the night.

"Well, no point in staying up anymore." Mike said as he moved to get up into his lofted bed. Suddenly, his head was filled with a thick fog. He stumbled and fell onto the futon as he lost his balance completely.

"Must have had more than I thought..." he thought to himself right before passing out. He was instantly thrown into a dream. He was still in his room, but the lighting seemed different somehow. He turned to his right to see a shadowy figure standing there. It turned to him and said,

"I know what you want, and I can give it to you for something in return." With Mike's head still completely hazed, all he could do was lazily nod. The creature reached out and touched Mike's nose, and pain filled his face. Mike yelled out in agony and clutched his face, but soon it had spread to his entire head, and was quickly moving down his spine. He could feel his face stretching out, the bones in his face re-arranging, his ears moving upwards and outwards. His feet started to ache, and soon hurt more than his face. Mike could feel his legs changing. His feet were stretching and changing to a more downward angle. His toes changed as well; one toe seemed to simply disappear leaving only four of roughly the same size. Without warning, the base of his spine exploded outward into what could be called a tail with tremendous pain. Mike knew exactly what was happening to him, but he never thought it would be this painful. In an instant it all stopped. He was then aware of the fur slowly covering his skin. When it was all completely finished, he sat there, body aching, and looked up at the being towering over him. It said in a deep voice,

"Now for my end of the bargain, your soul." Mike was instantly terrified. He reached for his knife and whipped it open, every movement hurting as if he had just completed a hard workout.

"If you want my soul, you're going to have to fight me for it!" Mike yelled back at him. He tried to stand up, but still didn't have any balance what so ever and simply fell back onto the futon. He weakly held the knife out in front of him, but the being simply swatted it out of his hand. As it reached its hand out towards him, Mike knew he was doomed. Suddenly there was a loud pounding on the door. Mike woke up instantly and found the room as it was before he had passed out.

"Are you okay in there Mike? You were screaming." It was his RA who lived in the room next door to him.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just had a terrible nightmare."

"Okay, just... keep it down, I'm trying to sleep." Mike decided he should probably get into his actual bed. As he walked over to his bed, he realized that he could see clear over it. He used to have to stand on his toes to do that. Still slightly buzzed, he thought he was just standing on some books or something and just didn't realize it. Though as he looked down, he was so shocked he almost fell over. He was actually standing on a pair of K9 hind paws. He quickly looked at his hands; they were covered in white fur. He sat down in his desk chair and turned on his web cam. (He used it as his mirror.) What he saw brought a smile to his face. He looked like a white basitin. His ears resembled that of a fennec fox and his eyes had even turned to a bright yellow. His joy quickly turned to panic, however, as questions of the future entered his head.

"I can't go to class like this; everyone will think I'm a freak." He sat in his chair desperately thinking of what he should do. Ultimately, he decided to leave. He'd go somewhere he could think and not worry about being seen. He quickly gathered up some supplies and clothes. Luckily, he had brought his backpacking backpack with him to college, and it was packed with many essentials already. Things like a stove, a pot, a water filter, and even a few dehydrated meals. He grabbed his trench coat and a hat since it had snowed the day before, slung his backpack on, and peeked out the door. The coast was clear, seeing as it was 3 AM, so he darted down the hallway towards the door. Once outside, he realized that for whatever reason, he didn't feel cold.

"Oh wait, I have fur now. Duh." Despite the discomfort in his long ears, he decided to stay covered just in case anyone saw him.

The walk to the parking lot is a short one, but uphill all the way. Despite this, Mike was in an all out sprint all the way there. When he got to his car, he noticed that his lungs weren't burning from the cold air like they usually do. "Must come with the fur." He said to himself with a chuckle. He got in the car and was about to start it when he realized he didn't know where to go. So he sat in his car, pondering what to do. The thought of going off into the wild didn't seem like a bad idea, except for the fact that he wouldn't have his guns. There is no way public safety would believe it was him. He did have his bayonet in his trunk, and that would work just fine for hunting. And besides, gunshots would just attract unwanted attention. It was settled then; he would go off into the woods and hunt for the rest of his life... or at least for a while anyways. He started up his car and raced north away from civilization, still not really sure of where he was going. Traffic was scarce, but he still got a few strange looks, which he replied to with an outstretched middle finger. Soon the buildings thinned out and he was on a two lane road with trees on either side. He drove for what seemed like forever. As it started to get lighter outside, he switched off his head lights and continued driving. Suddenly, the trees stopped at an almost perfect line and gave way to sand. He hit the brakes and skidded to a stop sideways; he had reached the end of the road. Mike got out of the car just in time to see the sun crest over the top of the water. "This is home..."
