Intro - The Awakening
OWWW...my head. Why did I have to try and keep up with the guys last night. I guess it's to be expected. The next thing I notice is a smell, what is that? I've been sensitive to smells from a hangover before but this is ridiculous.
Wait. I can hear people around me, someone is yelling, others trying to calm them.
At first I thought that I was dreaming. Maybe it's the TV I think i feel asleep with it on last night, but as I became more aware of my surroundings I realized that I was wrong.
My eye's pop open and I quickly sit up. How did i get outside?
The last thing I remember was getting home from a night out with my friends and passing out in my bed. The first thing I notice is that all those talking appear to be some sort of wolves or dogs...What...Wait a minute...Maybe I AM still dreaming.
The yelling gets closer and I'm suddenly face down on the ground as the animal...um...person?!...Screaming trips over me, stumbles and falls head first into a nearby tree.
Nope judging by the pain not a dream. Ok lets try this again. I roll over and sit back up.
"WHOA!!! What the hell!?! Fur??"I exclaim as I look myself over.
Grey fur, hands with claws instead of nails. Feet that look like a humans but with a thicker "pad" type sole, again with the claws. Something else strikes me.
"OH please!!"grabbing between my legs,"Thank God, all there!!"
Wait a minute, it's positioned different. Inside a fur covered sheath now, interesting. Oh well check that out further in private later.
What's that pain above my butt? I shift around and out from under me pops, My TAIL?!? I mumble to myself"This keeps getting weirder by the minute."
Feeling my face and being able to see quite a bit of my own muzzle I seem to be one of those wolf creatures. Oh well nothing that I can do anything about it, I seem to be all in working order and freaking out right now isn't going to help any.
Besides I can always do that later.
I shakily get to me feet, it takes a couple seconds for me to figure out how to counter balance with my tail. Figuring that out, I look around. I see that I'm not alone, there's wolf people all over the place. A couple other's are awake but most are still unconscious.
Those that are, like me are looking nervously around like they're trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
We seem to be in some sort of valley, a lot of cave opening along the walls. One big opening right behind us. The walls look to be pretty high, assuming that I'm still around the same height I'd guess about 90-100 feet tall.
There's a pretty decent river running down the middle of the valley. It cuts across the valley about 40 feet away, flowing sluggishly along. Further up, towards the mountains the trees look really thick. In the other direction it looks like the valley opens up into a grassland area.
Not seeing any immediate threat I step over to the animal, I mean person who tripped over me.
Carefully I kneel down to check to see if they were hurt. Neck and back seem alright, I decide to roll it over. Careful, Careful, there.
A little cut on the side of their muzzle, but otherwise everything seems alright. Checking it out further i notice it must be female. Hmmm...we're built differently then humans now.
Looks to be a little smaller then me, mainly white and black. She has some beautiful brown markings on her face, kinda reminds me of a border collie with her markings. Looking down at her body, she appears to have 4 nipples on her stomach, and no breasts up top.
Interesting, and judging by the screaming she was just doing I'd say that she didn't go to sleep last night looking like she now does either.
Gently I shake her to try and wake her up. Some moaning, and she places her hand to her head.
"Oh, my head."she murmurs, her eyes still closed."What did I do that it hurts so much?"
"Easy,"I say."don't get up to fast, and don't freak out again. I'd hate to see you run into another tree."
She freezes, starts trembling, and slowly opens her eyes. Calmer then I expect she asks,"What are you and what did you do to me?"
"My name is...or rather was Chuck." I reply,"As for what happened to you I honestly haven't got a clue. I would assume that you, like me went to sleep last night. Looking quite different I might add, a little less hairy and a little more pink maybe? Then the next thing I remember is waking up just now to your screaming. After which you tripped over me and went head first into the trunk of this tree. Which brings up to now."
"Sooo..."I ask."How about you, do you remember anything more or different? And do you have a name?"
"Yes, Cassandra."she says,"Cassie for short, and no that's about what I remember as well."
As we are talking more and more of the others are waking up. Now most are awake and starting to mill around. Surprisingly most are taking it pretty well, with just the occasional person freaking out. Even that usually being because of someone waking them up, with the first thing they see being a huge wolf leaning over them.
There's already a pretty big pack of what look to be children, smaller versions of the rest of us anyway. Running amuck already. Seemingly not fazed in the slightest about their new appearance.
Looking at I reach out to Cassie and ask,"Shall we go see if anyone knows what's going on?"
"Yes let's."
Grabbing onto my hand and pulling herself up, we walk over to the steadily growing crowd. There had to be 3-400 people already, gathered mostly in front of the big cave entrance in the valley wall. There was a bit of a ledge leading up to the opening, and seeing that no one else was stepping forward right away to take charge I stepped up onto it with Cassie following.
"Excuse Me,"I start, a few people turn.
"HEY!!!"I yell,"I want to compare what I know with everyone else."
Most of the other's now stop talking as well and turn and pay attention.
"Okay,"I start"It's pretty obvious that we're not in it anymore but I lived in Winnipeg. The last things I remember getting back late last night after being out drinking with my friends. I fell asleep watching TV in my bed and then I woke up here."
Everyone tried talking at once.
"Quiet!!"I yell,"One at a time."
"Ummm..."One of the wolves closest to me says, I point to him and he says,"What's a TV? And were is Winnipeg? Is that a new city over in Rome?"
"No, not Rome. Rome's a city in Italy"Cassie answers him back,"Winnipeg is in Canada, but I've never heard of a TV."
Weird, I think who hasn't heard of TV? And Winnipeg part of Rome? Like Cassie I thought that was a city.
Leaving that for the moment I continue,"Okay then does anyone know anyone else or did we all get brought here by ourselves?"
About two thirds of them turn out to be couples. "And do we know who belongs to what child yet? Assuming of course by the number of couples and all those kids that they belong to some of you."
Surprisingly this hadn't occurred to anyone yet, so we spent the next hour or so rounding up, identifying, and returning the kids to their parents. Most coming from fairly large families, those couples that had kids tended to have 5-6 of them.
This of course lead to the next discovery. ALL the children seemed to have both sets of genitals. Once again I couldn't believe how well everyone was taking everything. That was when i realized that I could actually feel the mood of everyone around me.
Things just keep on getting more and more interesting.
Next thing we did was get an accurate count, this turned out to be a bit of an ordeal as it seemed that not many could count, at all. There was a few of us though that could so we went through and as we counted had the people sit down.
900 people all together, 300 male, 300 female, and 300 children. What really surprised me though was that out of those only 10 could count, and none of those were children.
Finishing that, and there's suddenly a woman scream from just inside the cave mouth behind me. What now I think to myself and cautiously move towards the entrance.
"Stay back you filthy animal!! Don't come any closer!!"comes out of the darkness, followed by a decent size rock. I dodge just in time and the rock sails by my head close enough to graze the fur of my cheek.
"Whoa, lady calm down!!"I say as I dive to the side of the cave.
"It talks, how can it talk?!?"comes out of the darkness."WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON??"
"It's okay, we won't hurt you. We're a little confused about what's going on too."I say in as soothing a voice as I can as I start moving towards the sound of her voice again.
"Stop!! I'll throw another one!" she threatens.
Putting my hands up I stop,"Okay, Okay, I've stopped. Here I'll back back out and why don't you come out into the light. You'll see that you look like everyone else."
I back all the way off the ledge and back to the crowd. The thing is she didn't look like everyone else.
She was human.
