F lint Hobten took in a deep breath of the cool morning air, stretching himself as he walked along the small, dirt road that led from his small home in the countryside to the hamlet where he worked, the young Fennec smiled to himself, looking around up at the opposite wall of the habitat.
The sun was just coming in via the large external mirrors, its tint turning everything gold. It was the young Fennec's favorite time of day, when all was quiet and peaceful. Very few of the other settlers were up and about so early.
Flint, along with about 15,000 other people, lived in the Bernal Sphere-type Space Habitat of New Concord 1 (or NC1), a massive structure built at Earth's L1 Lagrange Point, one of a pair of such habitats, that pair being one of hundreds of others, either under construction or already populated.
Their construction had been a massive, long-term project, first begun many decades before. They were part of a massive program by the world government, the U nited E arth R epublic ( UER ), to develop space, a monumental undertaking known as the High Frontier Program.
The colonization of space, first seriously proposed by Gerard K. O'Neill in the early 1970s, had long been a dream of Humanity, and later Furries, for generations.
On a planet beset by resource depletion, environmental degredation and chronic overpopulation, it seemed the only way to go was up.
