#2 of Beginings
I opened the door and yelled "Hey mom, I'm home!" There was no answer. "Mom?" I called worriedly. I walked into the living room. Max was close behind me. Mom was lying on the floor motionless. "Oh my gosh! Max! Call 911!" I yelled. Max ran to the phone and dialed. I was too shocked to hear what he said. "The ambulance will be here soon." Max told me. He wrapped his arms around me. "It's gonna be all right." He whispered into my ear as he rocked me back and forth. "It's gonna be all right." The ambulance came and loaded my mom into it. We had moved outside but Max was still holding me. My dad had died in a house fire when l was seven. I didn't want her to die too. I knew Max was an orphan after both his parents died of cancer. He lived at his aunt's house. At the hospital we waited for news. Max was still holding my hand. After about an hour, the doctor came out and said "I'm sorry, but she's dead." I gasped and sobbed on Max's shoulder. He held me all the while. I was now officially an orphan. He called a taxi to take us to his house and I fell asleep immediately. The next morning I woke up. It was Saturday, pancake day. I looked around for my mom when the memory hit me with the force of a truck. She was dead. I would never see her again. I almost started to cry again but l stopped myself. I needed to be strong for her.
I sat up slowly and looked around. Max had put me in his bed and was still asleep. I gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you for everything." I whispered in his ear. I sneaked quietly across his house and left. I biked back to my house.
