A Life Worth Living - Chapter 6 - Silent Night

The 5 of us met up at William's house and we set out. We found a nice little clearing in the woods and got to work. The night was supposed to be free from clouds, allowing for a beautiful view of the night sky.

"Hey, Alurx, grab my axes out of the bag, we got some work to do."

"Yea, all right." Grabbing his bag I shuffled around in it until I found his tools of deforestation. Tossing one to William and handing another to Deltrox. Kaynin and I headed out to find some firewood while Cohulan scrambled off to scavenge for tasty berries. I turned my back on Kaynin to look at my surroundings when I heard Kaynin make a sudden move behind me. As I tried to turn around she was already airborne and coming in fast. Quickly as I could I tossed the axe far to my right and she grappled onto my shoulders.

"Ah ha ha gotcha!" she laughed. "Your mine now wolfie!"

"Ahh, but that's what you think" I quickly responded. I spun around till her feet lost their grip from my waist, then I reached back with one arm, grabbing her by her hips. "Now I've got you!" I whispered. She continued to scramble around when I finally lost my balance and toppled over, her landing on my chest.

"Now I have won!" She exclaimed with a cute tone in her voice.

"You may have won the battle, but the war has just begun." With a grin I began to tickle her ribs until she was in a fit of laughter. I capitalized on the moment and flipped her over and pinned her arms down. From the ground she cocked her head sideways and blew some hair off of her eyes. Standing up I extended out a hand and help her off the ground.

"Didn't we have a job to do?" She asked, grinning slightly.

"Yea, most likely. Now where'd I drop that axe?"

It took us a few minutes, but we eventually found it.

"Figures you two wouldn't be doing any work."

"Hmm, what? Ohh nope I'm chopping down this tree right now!" I quickly responded, chucking the axe behind me and hearing it sink into a tree. I turned to Kaynin. "We've been working right?"

"Ohh totally, nothing but work here." She said, chuckling sarcastically.

He laughed. "Yes, I can see that. Anyways, the others got enough wood, so we're gonna start up the fire and get dinner cooking. So when you two are done with this 'war' going on," Cohulan said sarcastically, "Head back where we can find something else for you to do."

While heading back to our camp, something caught my attention. It was a scent, something that I had smelt once before. It was subtle, but not in a good way. It wasn't in anyway pleasing like flowers or fruit, but smelt somehow of cruelty. It stung my nose just ever so slightly, but more than enough to be noticeable. I turned around to see if whatever what emanating the smell was behind me. Far in the distance I saw a black feline figure leaning against a tree. I rubbed my eyes to get a better view, but when I opened them there was nothing there except the slight hint of the scent.

"Hey, Alurx, you ok?"

Without realizing it I had stopped walking and now Cohulan and Kaynin were a good 15 feet ahead of me looking back.

"Oh, yea, just fine." I said, wondering if I was just seeing things.

"Kaynin, you absolutely sure you didn't smash him in the skull with the blunt of the axe?"

"Ohh shut up Cohulan, of course I didn't. But you, I don't know. You might want to keep blunt objects away from me when I'm around you." She said, giggling at the fake face of fear Cohulan put on.

When we got back, William and Deltrox had already put the base of the fire together and piled the rest of the wood nearby.

"About time you got back. Decide to take a nap Cohulan?"

"Ohh stuff it Deltrox, I'm not the one that was laying down on the ground."

"Umm, wasn't me." I sarcastically remarked, brushing dirt and twigs from my wings.

"Regardless, I'm going to start this fire."

"Don't burn down the forrest AGAIN Deltrox." William said.

"If a tree catches, you can be the first thing I use to put it out ok Will?"

"Ohh I'm soo afraid." He said, exaggerating being scared and grabbing our chest of food from the pile.

I saw Kaynin smirk at me, and I returned it and nod in the way of yep, these are how they always are. She chuckled and glanced away, only to once again lock eyes. Then her eyes get big and she screamed.

"Alurx your on fire!!!"

"Well, I wouldn't say that." I say, thinking it was a compliment.

"No dawg, Deltrox lit your tail on fire!" Cohulan shouted, laughing his ass off.

"OHH SHIT!" I shouted, trying desperately to smother the fire before it singed anything more than fur. Thankfully I was able to extinguish it before it got to the nerves on the tip of my tail. "Deltrox!?!?! That's fucking twice today my tails been lit up like the sky of the fourth of July!!!"

"Umm, my bad man?" He said, a grin spreading from one side of his face to the other.

With the fire now in the fire pit, Cohulan could begin to prepare and cook our food.

"Man, this is great. When's the last time we did this?" I asked.

"Umm, just two months ago I think." William said.

"Really? I thought it was like at least seven months ago?"

"No man, just two months ago. You really not remember?" William asked in awe.

"Naw man, it's like I can't remember certain things and it's weird ya know?"

"Ok dude, whatever, let's just get some grub!"

Cohulan finished the cooking and threw it on the table. "Ok guys and gal, eat up!"

Many things were talked about during the thrown together feast, including high school, recent happenings, and many friendly gibes at me and Kaynin, most of which I just blew off with a chuckle. It was actually quite ironic because not only was Kaynin laughing with them, but she actually was the one coming up with quite a few of them. Still, the day grew later and the sun's shine shrunk to a glow in the distance until it was just all of us huddled around a fire, night sky above and the sweet melody from Cohulan's guitar surrounding us in the peaceful, calm air.
