Found at the Yard Sale (Diapers)

There wasn't much for a young, college-bound lion to do during summer except prowl around aimlessly, looking for something to catch. However, the heat was unbearable for Michael, who didn't appreciate the warm weather like the other lions. Occasionally, he mustered up some energy to drive around the sleepy town he lived in, watching nature flourish and wither around him. One summer, after losing his job running errands for his elderly neighbors -- which was the only thing that kept him preoccupied during the week -- he became depressed, and he was short on income. With his parents' permission, he decided to have his own yard sale and sell some of his possessions.

Michael sat on the front lawn of his house with a table full of nicknacks, including some video games and comic books, which eventually caught the attention of some neighbors around his age. Michael looked up and saw three young men looking at his goods. The feline stood up from the grass, brushed the dirt off his jeans, and walked over to the group after he heard them saying excitedly, "This is cool! I like this! Wow!"

"'Sup?" Michael asked the group.

"Hey man, I -- uh, we... were checking out your Monster Man comics," said one male, a tiger. "I love these!" he said, pointing to a stack of comic books on the table.

"Wow, you got Gamestation 2 games too? Holy sh--!" exclaimed another, a fox.

"I like the baseball cards, myself," said an equine, a friend of theirs.

"Yeah, feel free to check everything out," encouraged Michael.

The lion sat on the ground, laid back casually with his arms folded behind his head. He crossed his legs, and took a pleasant sigh. He was content that he was going to sell some of his things -- and he was happy especially because there were others in the neighborhood that had similar interests to his.

Michael's family moved into the area only a year earlier, and he was hesitant to meet new people around the neighborhood. Normally, he kept to himself, but deep inside, he wanted to be more outgoing and friendly. When he saw the group of guys sorting through his things, he smiled and rubbed his whiskers. Initially, he wanted to invite them inside his house so he could show them his games and comic books, but he didn't want to intrude. Resisting the urge to converse with them, Michael slowly paced around the front lawn, looking for some shade to stand in. Once he found a part of the lawn that wasn't exposed to the blistering, hot sun, the tiger approached Michael with two video game boxes in hand.

"You ready to go?" asked Michael.

"Yeah. I got, like, two games here that I want to get. How much?"

"Four bucks a piece. That comes to eight."

The tiger went into his pants to pull out his wallet. As he fished out his money, the tiger looked down for a second at Michael and asked, "Hey, you still have a Gamestation 2?"

"Oh yeah," replied Michael with a playful swish of his tail. "I play it all the time!"

"I don't know if this is cool with you or not, but... could Matt, Devin, and I play some games at your house later today or something? We're kinda bored, and --"

Michael blurted, "Sure!" before the tiger could finish.

"Really? Sweet! Oh yeah... almost forgot. I'm Tyler. The fox is Matt, and the equine is Devin. We live about a block north of you, on the cul de sac... Valero Street."

Michael leaped to his feet and gave a toothy grin. "Ah, yeah. I know where that is! Nice to meet you guys. Call me Mike. I'll be chillin' here at the house."

"Mind if we stop by at around two or so?" asked Tyler.

"Nope."

"This is cool!" Devin declared. "No one wants to hang with us."

"Why is that?" asked Michael.

"Eh, y'know, whatever," Matt said with a dismissive shrug. "Thanks for this!" The fox flashed the comic books he was looking at earlier, and gave a warm smile of appreciation.

The boys paid Michael and gleefully jogged down the street, looking forward to meeting up with the lion later. The lion closed shop early, and brought whatever he didn't sell back inside. He placed his things in a large cardboard box and set it inside his closet above a transparent, plastic drawer full of what appeared to be disposable adult diapers. The lion quietly sighed the moment his eyes met the drawer. Knowing that company was coming over and his diapers were in plain sight, Michael felt embarrassed, but he didn't anticipate that anyone would go into his closet for anything. Michael closed the sliding doors of his closet, and cleaned up his room.

A few hours passed, and Michael heard a knock at the front door. When he opened it, the lion greeted his new pals, and invited them inside. The group entered one by one and followed Michael to his bedroom. Fortunately, the guys had the house to themselves since Michael's parents left to go shopping and complete some mundane chores.

Michael opened up his bedroom door, and offered the guys a seat on the bed and a pair of beanbag chairs. After studying the room, Devin leaped to Michael's television stand, turned on the TV, and powered up his game system. Michael left the room briefly to bring them soda from the fridge. When the lion came back to his room, the group was already heavily into the game, and they were arguing.

"Goddamit, Matt. Jerk! It's my turn!" shouted Tyler.

"No dude, I won that round. Go bug Devin. He's the one who lost."

"Give me one more chance -- and I swear I'll kick your ass! You'll see!" Devin protested.

"Guys, guys, guys. It's just a game! Relax!" said Michael, trying to defuse the tense vibe in the room.

"It's more than a game. It's... life or death! It's serious! It's really, really serious!" joked Matt, who twitched his ears before burping in Devin's face.

"Aw, what? No!" Devin reacted to the burp. "That's sick! Now I lost. Geeze!" Frustrated, the equine slid the controller across the floor, and crossed his arms.

Everyone laughed and continued playing. Michael was delighted to just watch the group play the game. The lion was tempted to play with them, but he liked laying on his bed, watching the game with a pillow comfortably wedged between the wall and his back.

The lion had no siblings, but just for a moment, he imagined that the other guys in the room were like his "brothers," given that they looked a few years younger than him. He liked the idea of being the host of the party, and making sure that his guests were thoroughly satisfied. From the looks of things, it seemed that way. The arguing slowly turned into friendly teasing and wisecracks. Eventually, Michael picked up a controller and played with them. When he was done, he walked over to his desk and checked e-mail on his computer.

After an hour of playing, Tyler hit the pause button, and gave a faint whimper followed by a frustrated grumble. When Matt asked what was wrong, Tyler shook his head, and quietly stood up. "It appeared again," Tyler muttered. The room went quiet for a second, but it was clear that both Matt and Devin knew why the tiger appeared distraught. Michael observed their faces as they looked at Tyler, and bit their lip in unison. The fox and the equine rolled their eyes, and looked back at Michael, who sat at his desk chair, trying to figure out what happened.

Concerned, Michael approached Tyler and asked him, "Hey, is everything alright?"

Ignoring the question, Tyler asked in a monotonous, faint tone, "Where's the bathroom?"

"It's down the hallway, second door to your left." Michael turned to the rest of the group and asked, "Are you okay, man?"

"Just... don't tell him, please," Tyler snapped to his friends as he walked out of the bedroom with his head down.

Michael was agitated because nobody wanted to talk. The lion sat silently, drumming his paws on his knees, waiting for an explanation. Finally, he got one, but it wasn't one he was expecting. Michael followed Matt's eyes, which wandered over to the beanbag that Tyler was sitting on. Michael leaned over to look at the beanbag chair, and noticed it was wet. When he noticed the wet spot, the lion's heart skipped a beat. He immediately knew what happened to Tyler.

"Oh, I -- I can clean that up. It's not a big deal," Michael insisted.

Leaving the game paused, Devin and Matt stood up and calmly started to walk out of the bedroom. Matt turned to Michael and told him, "I'm sorry," before opening the door and leaving. It was apparent that both men were disconcerted by what unfolded. Then, Michael gulped nervously and said to them, "It happens to me too."

Devin raised an eyebrow and stopped in the doorway. He adjusted his baseball cap nervously, and turned to face the lion. "Really?"

"I don't like to admit to it, really, but yeah. Don't worry about it. Have a seat. I'll be right back."

Without saying a word, Matt and Devin walked back into the bedroom and sat down. Michael walked over to the bathroom door and knocked. "Hey Tyler, it's Michael."

"I'll... be out in a minute..." said the tiger from inside the bathroom. Tyler sounded like he was uncertain.

"Okay, well... I just wanted to say that I have accidents too. It's okay. I understand what you're going through."

"Yeah right," Tyler snapped. "Like you'd know."

Michael took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a second. He opened his eyes and walked back into his bedroom where Matt and Devin were watching the TV. For a moment, the guys were started by Michael opening his closet door. At that point, Matt looked at the drawer in the lion's closet and gasped. Devin stood up, and tried to say, "Oh my God!" but he was preoccupied with shock to see the stack of adult diapers that could be seen lined up inside Michael's translucent drawer. The diapers looked thick, white, and fluffy. Each diaper had a pair of blue-colored wetness indicator stripes, which ran parallel to the diaper's brand name and the letter "M," which referenced its actual size. The lion reluctantly took a diaper out of his drawer, pointed to it and said, "See?"

Michael couldn't believe what he was doing. He just showed two people he just met his diapers. The lion figured that the guys were aware of Tyler's condition, and that they were tolerant of it. He also figured that they would be looking at Michael differently from that point on, but he was more concerned about Tyler than having any awkward first impressions. With a diaper in hand, the lion knocked on the bathroom door. "Can I come in? I want to show you something."

The door knob turned a little, and the door was opened by a small crack. Michael pushed his way in, and saw Tyler, who sat on the toilet with his blue shorts down to his ankles. Emotionless, Tyler looked down at his waist, which -- to Michael's complete and utter surprise -- was covered in a diaper. Clearly, Tyler had wet himself substantially. The tiger's diaper was wrinkled all around, and it sported a bulge, which was intensified by the wetness surrounding it. It looked like Tyler's diaper was previously wet, but he wet it again and forced a leak. Most of the diaper was dark, yellow, and it carried a strong scent of piss.

Humiliated, the tiger continued to look down, wiggling his soaked diaper a little. Michael couldn't help but smile. The lion recalled a time when he was younger, and he stood in the bathroom of his old house, with his dripping wet pants. At that time, he stared at the mirror and bit his lip. He could hear his mother calling out to him. "Are you alright?" his mom asked while tears welled up in his eyes. Michael could remember the warmth he felt in his pants, and the moment he lost all control of his bladder. The young lion was scared, confused, and unsure about how he was going to handle something he tried to hide -- from his family -- for several years.

Tyler shook his head, and spoke softly to Michael. "I'm sorry for this."

"I'm here for you, man," said Michael. "Don't worry about it."

The lion handed the folded diaper to a very surprised Tyler, who jerked his head up, and looked at Michael. "Where did you get this?"

"It's mine, actually."

"No way!"

Michael chuckled and nodded slightly. "Way."

"You're incontinent too?"

"Well, yeah." Michael placed his large lion paw on Tyler's shoulder. "It's a small world after all."

Tyler took a sigh of relief. He was still very unsure of what was happening around him; it seemed like a weird dream. "I just met you, and... the person who I meet happens to also be incontinent. I don't know whether to be happy or disturbed or -- "

"Just slip on what I gave you. It's for heavy use. Here, let me take your shorts. I'll throw them in the washer and dryer. You mind hanging out for a half an hour? That's how long it'll take to clean your shorts."

The tiger was grateful for Michael's helpful assertiveness. "Wow, I can't thank you enough."

"No problem. If you need help changing, I can --"

Tyler raised his paw at Michael and chuckled nervously. "No, no. I'm good."

Michael left the bathroom and closed the door behind him. He took the tiger's shorts and jogged to the laundry room. After a few minutes, the lion went back to the bedroom and sat on his desk chair. Matt and Devin walked over to Michael.

"How did it go?" asked Matt.

"He's fine. Accidents happen, y'know?" The lion downplayed it. "Just curious: how did you guys find out about him being incontinent? I know, strange question, but..."

"Both of us knew Tyler since we were in preschool," Devin replied.

"Wow, that long?" asked the lion.

"Yeah. We had sleepovers all the time, and his mother would always tell us before we turned off the lights at night, 'Be sure to not make fun of Tyler. He wets the bed sometimes,' and we were like, 'Okay,' because we used to wet the bed too, and --"

"Hey, you didn't have to tell him that!" Matt protested.

"Shut up. Mike's cool with it. Anyway, so... Tyler was different in that he wet the bed a lot more than we did. We just got used to it. Didn't bother us. Kids teased him, sure, but we didn't. We even defended him. Then we got teased."

"Oh! Oh! Hey Devin, remember that guy Derrick on the freshman wrestling team? He was picking on Tyler when he found out about him, and then you joined the team. I should tell Mike this story."

"I'm gettin' out of here," said the equine, who started blushing as he attempted to walk out of the room. Matt tugged Devin playfully, and told him, "Oh no you don't!" The fox tried to bring the embarrassed equine back into the room. Devin walked back in and sat down at the edge of Michael's bed. Devin put his hands over his ears so he wouldn't hear the story. Michael laughed. Suddenly, the lion caught a glimpse of Tyler, who walked into the room wearing the new diaper. The tiger crinkled over to the television stand, and powered up the game system like nothing happened.

"Welcome back, Ty!" exclaimed Matt. "Anyway... Derrick was bothering Tyler after finding out that he wore diapers, and Devin just joined the team. Devin got into a practice match with Derrick, this crocodile. Derrick was in the same weight class as Devin, so they were going to be paired up for several skirmishes after this one. Devin managed to pin that big guy down. He pinned him in a way that his crotch was right in Devin's face. Then, get this: he leaked on top of him."

"You what?!" Michael shouted.

"Yeah, and I told him, 'Guess I should have put on my diaper today,'" Devin added.

The lion comically covered his maw with his paw in shock, and everyone in the room laughed. "Wait, are you guys serious?"

"Yep. That really happened," Tyler affirmed. "They told me about it after it happened. Devin got detention for it, but it was totally worth it."

"The news must have traveled around the school," said Michael.

"You bet it did, but nobody believed Derrick when he told people. It was like, SWOOSH! Over the head. 'What kind of sick bastards piss on people?'"

"Germans," Michael replied. Everyone sat in the room with a poker face, and tried to maintain their composure before bursting out in laughter.

By the end of the day, it was like Michael knew these guys for most of his life. They were having fun: playing, laughing, and joking all because of something that most people would be too scared to admit to. Incontinence: what appears as a weakness ultimately became something that drew them closer to each other. Incontinence may be something that some may want to hide away from the rest of the world, but to others, it's one of the best kept secrets.
