Chapter two:

Mike had decided to wait out the day before he moved closer to the highway. Although it appeared deserted, this place still managed to gain quite a bit of traffic up and down it each day. As night approached, Mike set off through the rough bushland; always heading west. As he was walking, a wave of sadness engulfed Mike. His thoughts ran to that of his family, and how he never got to say goodbye; to the one girl at his dojo that he had planned on asking out that night; all of his friends he had to leave behind. Feeling a tear run down his cheek, Mike shook his head. "Get a hold of yourself you fool" he mumbled to himself. Darkness had finally set in and Mike took out the miniature torch on his key chain.

As he was walking, Mike came to a small side road leading off the highway. The sign read DAVIES CREEK ROAD. Figuring that he could use a place to rest that night away from any prying eyes, Mike followed the road. As he approached the camp ground, he heard voices echoing through the camp grounds. Checking his watch, he saw that the time was only just after seven in the evening. Great! Thought Mike; This will be a little tricky. People aren't even asleep yet. Switching off his torch light, Mike withdrew into the bushland surrounding the car park and headed into the hills behind the campsite.

As he was scaling some of the rocky terrain, startled wallabies and curlews ran to get out of sight. Just as he got to the peak of a rocky outcrop, a young boy out exploring before bedtime froze. Mike froze as well, unsure of what to do. Just as he was pondering what to do next, the boy let out a scream. Not wanting to wait for more people, Mike sprung into action and muffled the child's voice. "Please!" Begged Mike "please don't tell anyone." Wide eyed, all the boy could do was let out a squeak. "Please!" Mike pleaded again, and this time pressed a ten dollar note into the kid's hand. The boy nodded and the paw over his mouth withdrew. Mike dashed deeper into the bush as he heard the child's parents approaching. Eventually coming to a small cave, Mike turned on his torch once again and scouted the recess. Satisfied that there weren't any unfriendly critters around, he then placed his backpack on the ground and settled in for his first night in the wilderness.
