Vincent sighed: 'As for what happened to him I will tell you everything I know. It was a tragedy that happened a month an a half ago'...

(Astaroth part2 - The birth)

In a deserted shoreline a lonely adolescent batmorph was pulling an old rusty cart filled with mangoes, coconuts and passion fruit for his family and siblings. The merciless orange orb was scorching the whole beach like an angry eye as the hot sand was scratching his hind paws, and to make things worse the humidity wasn't helping at all to make the heat more bearable.

He was only dressed in a pair of ragged denim cut-offs tied with a rope and his own fur. As he was approaching the collapsed patrol boat that his dispossessed family used as a home. He went to check the old weather ballon. The thermometer inside the ballon marked ninenty-seven degrees Fahrenheit. He expected a reading like that but nevertheless he felt surprised. A female voice yelled from inside the hut.

She screamed: 'Astaroth, please help me with the dinner. Father is in a very foul mood and he gets angrier when the food is not ready'. The bat was beginning to get upset but he decided to stay calm. He replied: ' I'm sorry Lilith, but I have to carry these coconuts inside the hut and my back hurts badly'. His sister saw that the male bat was walking with difficulty as he tried to pull the cart.

She said worriedly: 'Mother, I think that Astaroth hurt his back while carrying all those coconuts'. An older, corpulent female bat appeared in the front door of the hut. 'Aster, how many times I've told you not to overdo things and ask for help when you need it'. 'Now, Lilith, call that mangy bother of yours and tell him to carry all those coconuts inside the hut if he wants to eat tonight, or else no supper for him'. Then she turned around and addresed the younger male bat severely: 'And as for you Astaroth, you will have the rest of the evening toplay or do whatever you want but I want you to be in time for dinner'. 'Do you undertand?'

Astaroth sighed with relief: 'Yes Mom. I promise I won't be late'.

She replied: ' I'll only believe it when you actually make it on time because you are very innatentive'.

'Awwww, Mom'.

Aster protested, but he inmediately shut up because he didn't want to ruin his chances to go and play before she changed her opinion and gave him some cleaning chores. Astaroth was enjoying himself in the old Starfleet practice firing range. It was an artificial coral atoll near the western Antilles. This coral atoll was made centuries ago (mid 21st century) out of garbage, scrap metal, and some sunken ships. The place hasn't been used in decades. It offered a good refuge against government patrols and criminal gangs that infested the principal islands. It helps in some circumstances to become invisible when you are persecuted and also an illegal furry. They wished they could live in any place safely but they knew they were not allowed to work or even to step inside the island of Silver Bay. Doing so meant that they would be arrested on the spot. They didn't have any legal rights so even their winged primitive ancestors were better protected. This cursed place was contaminated with heavy metals, radiation from naval space photon torpedoes, and worst of all, anti-matter live ordinance. So his family has chosen the least of two evils. Living until contamination took their lives was in comparison better than a quick and brutal death on the streets. To any foreigner this place would look like paradise lost, with lush green mountains, palm trees and deep turquoise waters. It is only a mirage because the landscape is filled with explosion craters that gave the place a bizarre and alien appearance. It looked like the craters of mars and the moon. Lucky for them that their wings would help them avoid contaminated areas or live ammo and the fact that they ate fish far from the contaminated coast. They knew this wasn't a guarantee but they knew they were taking chances.

Astaroth was playing with the water and enjoying the deep blue sky of autumn. He hated the summer season because the sky looked a depressing dull gray due to the dust clouds that came across the ocean from the Sahara desert. He would rather play in the shore after dark, because he always liked to see how the bioluminescent water glows, giving the night an eerie appearance. Then he realized he was late so he ran for it. As he ran uphill to the hut he heard a deafening thunderclap as a column of black putrid smoke began to rise where his home was supposed to be. Second later another he heard another deafening thunderclap, far stronger than the first as an explosion tossed him like the hand of a giant. He landed forcefully in the sand with a loud "thud". He felt a searing pain in all his back and became aware of something that was incrusted in his left thingh.

Seconds later, he heard two drakes shountin orders to a group of masked humans in green uniforms. They said: [Do not leave any witnesses alive.][And find the bastard who sold us those useless anti-matter warheads if he's still alive']. He though he had just heard some gurgled screaming and phaser fire as well. He almost heard an certain quality in that groan that carried the wail of death. He shuddered like he felt a block of ice on his back as he realized the meaning of what he heard. The pain on his back was so unbearable that he felt like he would scream until his throat became sore. But he only had the strenght to remain awake for a few seconds until he passed out. Then, total silence, only the rustle of the wind...
