Chapter 5: The dark side.

Spyro woke up by the sudden temperature fall in the room, "huh, why did it turn so cold out of a sudden." He thought to himself. "The cold air seems to radiate from Hypter, I better check if he is ok. His scales have turned blue again, what if I accidentally look into his eyes? Meh, what's the worst that could happen? "He though to himself. And so Spyro strutted over to Hypter. "Hypter, wake up buddy." Spyro said as he poked Hypter but it didn't help. "Hey Hypter, wake up now." Spyro said, giving Hypter a harder nudge this time making Hypter yawn and slowly sit up. "Oh hi Spyro, is it already morning?" Hypter said as he looked sleepily at Spyro. The curiosity took control over Spyro and he looked into Hypter's eyes but off course he shouldn't have done that.

Because when he looked into Hypter's eyes at first they seemed normal but then he saw that his eyes had lost all the kindness they had before. "Soo very cold..." Spyro said as he fell to the floor. Hypter figured out what had happened and quickly suppressed his state as he run to the bed where Cynder was sleeping. "Cynder, wake up quickly." Hypter said as he shook her awake. "Ughh, what is it Hypter, its in the middle of the night." She said sleepily. "I don't have time to explain, you must help me to get Spyro warm." He said as calmly as he could. "Why? What have happ" she was cut off when she saw Spyro lying curled up and shaking on the floor. "He accidentally looked into my eyes when I was in my other state." He tried to explain the best he could. "Get him up in my bed and I'll start warming some tea." Hypter said and Cynder did as she was told. "Try to get close to him so that you warm him up with your body heat." Hypter said as he was done with the tea. "Spyro, listen carefully, I have boiled some tea but it is very hot so drink it slowly." Hypter told Spyro as he began to come to. Hypter was standing next to Spyro who opened his mouth to slowly lap on the tea.

After some cups of tea later Spyro began to regain his warmth. "Hypter, what happened? I looked into your eyes and they where so cold, it was like all your kindness was gone." Spyro said.

"I told you to not look into my eyes, lucky for you I was almost awake so the effect hadn't full effect." Hypter said.

"That is some nice defence you have there if you don't even have to be awake to use it. But the reason I woke you up was because the temperature sunk and it radiated from you so I should wake you up and see if you where ok." Spyro explained.

"Thanks for the thought Spyro but it's a part of my defence so it wont hurt me. Just try to ignore it if it happens again." Hypter said as he picked up the empty bowls. "Spyro, when I use that ability I read the persons mind and I noticed a strange dark side in you and that concerns me." Hypter said making Cynder react.

"Spyro, what does he talk about?" Cynder asked her mate that lay beside her.

"I don't know Cynder, you should ask him not me." Spyro replied.

"Is it possible you don't know about this side?" Hypter asked, more to himself than Spyro.

"Hmm...I guess it isn't impossible, it seems that it hid its presence for you but it is there, I can ensure you of that." Hypter said.

"Maybe it formed when you entered the shadow state?" Cynder suggested.

"Spyro have a shadow state? Very interesting." Hypter said.

"Yeah, when I become very angry I enter a shadow state which I can't control." Spyro explained.

"Hmm...that isn't good if that have been able to root in your mind. Maybe I should read your mind once in a while so that we know it won't progress." Hypter suggested.

"Well, I guess it's worth it but how much of my mind will you read?" Spyro asked.

"Oh, absolutely not more that necessary it should be enough with just a glint, so I will only see your recent memories, so don't do something private before I read your mind." Hypter replied with a laugh.

"I think I'll take a day of because the hypnosis can have some side effects both on you and on me. I'll go and put up a sign on the infirmary door then I'll come back here." Hypter said as he walked towards the infirmary.

As Hypter was on his way to the infirmary he met Cyril. "Oh, hi Hypter, why are you up so early?" Cyril asked. "Well I could ask you the same but since I already know I don't have to. And I'm up only because I shall put a note on the infirmary door that I'll be taking a day off since I need a pause from all the mating related issues that have come up lately." Hypter explained.

"Well that is a good reason and the urgency class you held went really well, I don't think Volteer would have been able to keep to the track that long." Cyril said with a laugh. "Well, then I bid you a good day." Cyril said as he continued towards his destination.

When Hypter had put up the note on the infirmary door he went back to his private room. Then suddenly he saw Cynder coming running towards him. "Oh thank ancestors I found you Hypter, something is wrong with Spyro." She said as she caught her breath.

"Where is he now?" Hypter asked trying to keep his voice down.

"He is still in your room, but he is acting strange, I can't describe it." Cynder said as they both started to run back to Hypter´s room. "Cynder it's better if you stay outside so you wont get hurt." Hypter said. "But Spyro would never hurt me." She protested.

"I know, but I might have to use my ability to calm him down and I don't know how this will effect me." Hypter said, receiving a nod from Cynder.

As Hypter entered his room he closed the door behind him and as soon it was closed he changed to his original appearance. "Spyro, how are you?" Hypter asked trying to judge in what state Spyro was in.

"Malefor, he is coming back we-we must..."

"Damn, he is in panic" Hypter thought to himself. Hypter silenced Spyro by grabbing his muzzle and tried to calm him down by talking calmly and in a whispering voice. "Shush Spyro, calm down, Malefor is dead and he can't hurt you nor anybody else." But Spyro pulled himself free from Hypter´s hold. "He is coming back, I can sense it I-I, we must do something." Spyro said as he ran around in the room. Hypter pounced Spyro and pinned him down to the floor and hit the muscles in his four legs with small jabs that numbed them so he couldn't move. "Spyro listen to me, nothing is going to happen." Hypter tried to calm Spyro down but it didn't work so Hypter had to use his hypnosis ability, and he really didn't like it. "Ok Spyro, look deep into my eyes..." Hypter said as he focused on Spyro and grabbed his head and forced Spyro to look at him. As Hypter began to entrance Spyro, Hypter started to freeze everything around him. Like a fire it spread around him and Spyro expanding in all directions. It reached to the door and freezing it shut and the window too.

Cynder saw the door freezing shut and got worried but she understood she couldn't do something so she decided to sit and wait until Hypter or Spyro said something.

"Yes, that's it, relax young dragon." Hypter said calmly as Spyro looked into his eyes. Spyro hadn't seen Hypter's ice blue eyes before and he thought they looked like a sea of ice, it really could freeze you to death, if it was the intent but instead they looked friendly and Spyro lost himself in Hypter's deep eyes. "Now, what was it that you said about Malefor before?" Hypter said as he noticed that Spyro was entranced as he stared blankly forward with dull eyes.

"I had a nightmare but it was so real and it really frightened me." Spyro said, still looking into Hypter's eyes. "What was the dream about?" Hypter asked.

"I was standing alone on a cliff shelf facing Malefor, he laughed and said that I and Cynder didn't defeat him last time, that we just postponed the inevitable." Spyro replied.

"Hmm...go back to that nightmare but imagine that Cynder, Cyril, Terrador, Volteer, Ember, Flame and I are standing next to you on the cliff shelf. How do you feel about it now?" Hypter asked.

"Better, it feels like Malefor is shrinking and slowly fading away." Spyro answered.

"Good, when I clap with my paw you will awake from the trance and look away from me." Hypter said as he clapped with his paw. When he did Spyro woke from the trance and looked away from Hypter. Hypter focused and started to change his appearance and as he did the ice slowly creped back towards Hypter and he shifted to red again, the ice was drawn into his body as his eyes turned green again.

"Cynder it's ok for you to come in." Hypter said, upon which Cynder entered the room.

"Spyro, how are you feeling?" Cynder asked, as she was worried for her mate.

"Ugh...my head hurts, and I had this strange dream that the room was covered in ice." Spyro answered. "That was no dream Spyro, when I use my hypnosis ability I freeze everything around me, creating a huge orb of ice as a total defence since I focus so much on the one I'm hypnotising." Hypter explained. "But why did you hypnotise me Hypter?" Spyro asked, as it seemed he had forgotten about it. "You had a nightmare about Malefor, I suppose it is the dark side of you that just took the appearance of Malefor, since it was created from the well of evil on his mountain." Hypter explained.

Later that afternoon Terrador was looking for Hypter because he needed information about Hypter's elements and what he was able to do. He found Spyro along the way and asked him to go down to the training room and wait there. Terrador found Hypter in his room, siting and reading a book.

"Hi Hypter, I require your presence in the training room." Terrador said, making Hypter sigh loudly.

"Very well, what have happened now?" Hypter asked Terrador.

"Nothing, I will explain when we get down there." Terrador said as they continued towards the training room.

"Hypter I want you spare against Spyro so we can see how good your fighting skills are and so that I can judge if you need more training." Terrador said.

"Ehm...you know that I'm against violence right?" Hypter asked, since he hated to fight.

"I know Hypter but you only have to do this once." Terrador explained.

"And also I want to see if anyone in the temple can beat me." Spyro said grinning at Hypter.

"Well, if that is what you want Spyro but know this, I won't hold back." Hypter said.

"Good, that was what I hoped to hear because I'm not going to hold back either." Spyro said.

As the two dragons entered the training room Hypter changed colour to his original ice blue, which made Terrador interrupt. "Hypter what is this?" Terrador asked.

"What? I just changed to my original colour which I must do to be able to fight properly." Hypter answered. "It's ok Terrador, I know about this." Spyro said.

"You do? Ok, do you still want to continue Spyro?" Terrador asked.

"Yes" Spyro answered shortly.

"Well then, let the sparring proceed." Terrador said as he flew away a bit.

"Spyro, last chance to cancel it." Hypter said smiling as his right paw started to glow green as he assembled a mask of ice with one green claw mark going vertically over each eye.

"Nice mask but the same goes for you" Spyro replied.

"Now you don't have to worry about looking into my eyes." Hypter said.

"But how are you going to see anything then?" Spyro asked.

"The mask is made of ice, I can see through it." Hypter replied.

As both dragons positioned themselves in battle positions they dug their claws in the ground and then Spyro started to charge Hypter. But when Spyro tackled Hypter there was a crash instead of an "ouch" much to Spyro's surprise. "It's lovely to have ice as element, isn't that right Spyro" Hypter said as he let out a laugh.

"What is this Hypter?" Spyro asked since he expected to run into Hypter.

"It's nothing really, it's just my ice reflections or mirror images if you so want, mostly used as defence but I must say they come to handy when retreating isn't an option. I freeze the ground and pull up a block of ice to reflect my image so that you don't know where I am." Hypter replied. "But you really must focus on the fight Spyro because right now you are about to loose." Hypter said.

"Just because I ran into your ice image? I don't think so." Spyro replied but as he tried to move he noticed that he was stuck in the ground. The ice from the mirror image that had fallen to the ground had frozen around his paws.

"I told you to focus Spyro, I will let you get free so I get some challenge." Hypter said with a grin. Spyro began to melt the ice around his paws with his fire breath as he tried to come up with a plan to beat Hypter. "Figured out a good tactic to beat me yet?" Hypter asked as he noticed that Spyro was thinking a lot. "Sure you could try to vaporise the water in the air but it would take to long wouldn't it?" Hypter asked with a laugh. Spyro didn't answer instead he used his earth power to send a stone flying towards Hypter, which dodged it with ease. "Come on Spyro, attack me or I will have to end this match because of boredom." Hypter said.

"Well we don't want that do we?" Spyro replied as he launched a couple of fireballs against Hypter. But Hypter just pulled up an ice shield around his wing and made them vaporise on contact. But as Hypter retracted his wing he saw Spyro coming charging against him with a flail of stone, Hypter dodged the first time but at the second time Spyro tossed the flail and hitting Hypter but then he disappeared with a crash. "Impressive I must say." Hypter said as he clapped his paws making Spyro turn around, seeing Hypter sitting next to Terrador. "Now that I see that you actually can hit ice reflections we can get down to business." Hypter said with a mischievous smile as his front paws became covered with black flames with a trace of green in them. "Hypter I didn't know you could do something like that" Spyro said as he watched Hypter's paws.

"I know, kinda cool huh? That is a power I got from the crystal, it's the shadow element, Cynder have it to but we don't share the same abilities." Hypter replied as he began to run in circles around Spyro, becoming a black/green flash. Spyro responded with a burst of fire in all direction.

Then he felt something on his back. "Spyro didn't I tell you to keep focused? Sure you gave a burst of fire in all directions but you also left your back open." Hypter said as the black flame on his right front paw switched colour to green. Spyro yelped in pain as Hypter touched him with his paw. "Oh common Spyro, fight back just a little, this is way to easy for me, after all it's your mind we are fighting in." Hypter said as he watched Spyro drop his jaw.

"Ehm...Terrador, I think Hypter hit something, maybe we should end the battle." Spyro said in concern for his friend but Terrador didn't answer. "Terrador are you listening?" Spyro said again, little louder to make sure the guardian heard him but again Terrador said nothing. "He wont hear you Spyro because he isn't there." Hypter said as he waved with his paw making Terrador fade away.

"Terrador! Hypter what did you do to him!" Spyro yelled as he charged towards Hypter, unleashing a bolt of lightning towards Hypter. As the lightning bolt hit Hypter the ice reflection melted to water. "Hypter where are you? Show yourself!" Spyro yelled.

"It doesn't matter if I show myself or not, you have already lost the battle." Hypter's voice echoed in the arena. "That can't be true, I'm still standing up!" Spyro yelled out in the emptiness.

"You think so? Watch this then." Hypter said as the arena turned to the mountain where Spyro and Cynder thought against Malefor.

"What are you trying to do Hypter?" Spyro yelled.

"Haven't you figured that out yet?" A dark voice rumbled as Spyro saw a dark presence at the top of the mountain. As the presence got closer to Spyro he could se it was his darker self. "Nice to finally meet you in person." The dark Spyro said.

"Too bad I can't say the same." Spyro growled back.

"Oh, is it that way you greet your saviour huh?" The dark Spyro asked.

"You aren't my saviour, I don't even know what you are" Spyro said.

"Oh, so when I kicked the Gaul's butt I didn't help you at all?" The dark Spyro asked with a grin.

"That wasn't you, it was me, alone, affected by dark powers and Cynder saved me from staying that way so Cynder if anyone is my saviour." Spyro replied.

"You alone wouldn't be able to beat Gaul nor Malefor, from where did you think you got all the powers? Did you honestly think it was you that possessed the power behind your elements? And did you think Cynder broke the mind control from Malefor that day by herself? Just keep dreaming, oh dragon of legend." The dark Spyro said as he let out an evil laugh.

"So you say that you helped Cynder get free from Malefor's mind control when I and Cynder faced Malefor, she wouldn't even need help defeating him alone so it's you that should keep dreaming." Spyro said defending his mate. "Oh, that hurt my feelings, well, I get my revenge sooner or later, if you get mad or maybe if our mate gets pregnant." The dark Spyro said with a smirk.

"For the first Cynder is MY mate, and if you threaten her or our future child I will kill you!" Spyro shouted. Then the darker Spyro gripped Spyro's throat and lifted him up from the ground. " Oh really now, how would you kill a part of yourself hmm? Shall you stab yourself in the heart perhaps?" The darker Spyro laughed. "No Spyro, you wont be able to get rid of m..." The darker Spyro was interrupted as Hypter laid his green flaming paw on his head. "It's very stupid to threaten my friends, now, I will banish you." Hypter said as the darker Spyro was pierced by a green light and slowly faded away. "Thanks Hypter but what did you do to it?" Spyro asked after he caught his breath.

"This was my plan with the fight from the beginning, I had to make you angry so that the darker part of you would come forth, the rest was easy since you drew his attention, I could sneak up behind him and use my mind control but since we already are in your mind I could completely erase him." Hypter explained. "So, I don't have to worry anymore?" Spyro asked.

"Not as long as you stay away from mystical purple glowing wells of evil." Hypter said with a laugh.

"When we come out from your mind, we will still be fighting since the time stands still in here, I got into your mind when touching your head with my paw. So basically we will return in that pose, which means we have to end the fight...but since I will win you don't have to worry about that." Hypter said with a laugh. "Not if I have something to say about it." Spyro answered, smiling.

But when they returned a huge stone wall separated Spyro and Hypter, it was Terrador that cancelled the fight. "Ok, that's enough, it was an even fight so I don't see a reason to continue." Terrador said.

"Hypter, we have to talk about your powers I believe." Terrador said with a concerned expression on his face. "Oh really? How unexpected." Hypter answered. "What exactly is it that you want to know." Hypter asked. "For example, how you are able to switch colour and how you can control the ice and shadow elements." Terrador said.

"The ice element is my original element and the shadow element I got during the war, I don't know how and where, I just know I can control it and I also have another unusual element." Hypter replied.

"I see, and your shadow element seems to differ somewhat from Cynder's I see, and what is this other element if I may ask." Terrador said.

"Indeed my shadow element differs from Cynder's, probably because she was given the powers and I was exposed to them, I think. And the unusual element that I also can control is psychic" Hypter said. "But why haven't you told anyone of us guardians about it? And what is this psychic power?" Terrador asked. "I didn't know if you should let me stay here if you knew that I had control over darker elements. And the psychic element is hard to describe, maybe a demonstration is the best way of showing it. And when I'm in my other state, don't look into my eyes." Hypter said. "Hey Spyro, would you mind help me with a demonstration here?" Hypter asked Spyro, since he was the only one there except Terrador. "Sure Hypter, what is it for a demonstration?" Spyro asked.

"I shall just demonstrate my psychic powers for Terrador, basically I will just hypnotise you and tell you to do something simple, nothing more and nothing less." Hypter explained.

"Ehm...I guess I can agree to that." Spyro said.

"Ok, you don't have to do anything Spyro, except to look into my eyes." Hypter said as he switched colour. And as Spyro looked into Hypter's eyes, he started to loose himself in the deep eyes. "That's it Spyro, relax, let your mind go blank, and listen to what I say and obey it. When I clap with my paws I want you two imagine that you are a sheep, you are on a field and the sun is shining, you are happy and jump around and bleat. And when I clap with my paws again you will wake up, unaware of your actions, nod if you understand." Hypter said, receiving a nod from Spyro. And when Hypter clapped with his paws Spyro began to jump around and bleat like a sheep, much to Terrador's surprise. After about five seconds Hypter clapped his paws again, Spyro halted and shock his head. "What happened?" Spyro said, as he looked confused.

"I just told you to act like a sheep, nothing more." Hypter replied.

"Hypter, I must say that the ability of yours is very interesting but I still fear it can be harmful." Terrador said. "And that is why I always suppresses that state, except when I'm fighting...that is why I dislike to spare and train among other dragons." Hypter said.

"So you do train, just not here?" Terrador asked.

"Indeed, I usually train near the mountain, because I try to increase my skill in drawing water from the environment, and I'm often alone there." Hypter said.

"Well, I have to talk to the other guardians about this, until we have made a decision we take away your permission to treat the others if it isn't life threatening. And you must also find somewhere else to sleep" Terrador said as he started to walk away, looking for the other guardians.

"Terrador you can't be serious about this!" Spyro outburst, since he considered Hypter a friend.

"No its ok Spyro, I understand that they can't take any risks, especially not since wrong medication could be fatal. And I can always sleep in the cave for a while, besides it could be nice with some vacation" Hypter said.

"I know but still..."Spyro said as he looked down in the ground.

"Oh, come on Spyro, I'm not going far away and it's only for a short period of time, besides you and your friends are always welcome to visit." Hypter said with a smile, trying to cheer up Spyro.

"Yes I know but still, it isn't fare, I mean, you have done so much here and just because you have some different elements they are kicking you out." Spyro said.

"But if you really miss me that much you and Cynder are always welcome to stay in the cave with me, it's large enough for three dragons, actually you would be surprised just how large it really is." Hypter said with a smile. "Really? That would be awesome Hypter but I wonder what Cynder will say, not to speak of the guardians." Spyro said as he thought about it.

"Well, I better go and pack my stuff then, without the bottles and herbs it won be much though." Hypter said and let out a small laugh.

In the afternoon Hypter had packed all the necessary stuff and prepared to take of to the cave when Ember came into his room. "Hey Hypter, are you going somewhere?" Ember asked as she noticed the backpack. "Yeah, I'm going on a little vacation." Hypter answered shortly.

"Ehm...could I ask you for a favour, I forgot it yesterday because of the tasty cookies." Ember explained. "Sure, what can I do for you?" Hypter asked, as he put down his backpack on the floor.

"Well, I suppose it was you that made the statues yesterday and I thought maybe you could make a small one of me and Flame." Ember explained as she looked expectantly at Hypter.

"Well, I guess I can throw something quick together." Hypter said as he took up a transparent jar and a wooden lid. "You have to step outside when I make it." Hypter told Ember, and she then nodded and turned around, leaving the room. As she had went outside Hypter switched to his original state, and as he focused small drops of water started to appear from nowhere. Slowly the drops formed to a small floating puddle of water, which slowly started to shape as two dragons. When the form was formed almost exactly as Flame and Ember it began to freeze. When the small statue was frozen solid Hypter put it on the floor and reached for the jar and wooden lid. He then pulled of a small scale from his body, it was deep blue in colour and it leaked a string of cold air, he put it on the lid and placed the ice statue on it, then he put the jar on the lid and sealed it. When he was done he suppressed his original state and his scales turned red again. "Ember, it's done, you might want to have a look at it." Hypter said as Ember entered the room. "Oh Hypter it's lovely, thanks a lot." Ember said as she hugged Hypter. "Heh, no problem Ember." Hypter replied as he tried to escape the choking hug from Ember. "Ember, could you ease up the hug a little and let me breathe a second?" Hypter said, to which Ember retracted her arms. "Sorry Hypter, sometimes I can't help myself." She said with a giggle.

"Well...anyway, I should probably be going before the sun sets." Hypter said with a smile.

"I guess you better but when will you return?" Ember asked.

"Probably in a week or two, anyway...see ya in a while." Hypter said as he took on his backpack and flew out of his window towards his cave.

Meanwhile somewhere else in the dragon temple Spyro had told Cynder about what happened and Cynder felt that Hypter was being treated unfairly and hadn't something against staying at Hypter's place.

"So Cynder, have you packed everything necessary?" Spyro asked Cynder as they prepared for staying with Hypter in the cave until the guardians decided if he could stay or not.

"Off course Spyro, I just don't understand why they are kicking Hypter out, I mean, I also possesses the shadow element." Cynder replied.

"I think it's because he can't fully control his powers." Spyro said and received a nod from Cynder.

"So, are you ready to take off?" Cynder asked as she took one of the backpacks on her back and prepared to fly out of the window.

"You bet I am." Spyro answered with a smile as he darted out of the window with Cynder following close behind.

When Spyro and Cynder arrived at Hypter's cave the noticed that Hypter had already arrived. They could see a dim light seeping out from the cave.

"Hi Hypter, Spyro said as he and Cynder entered the cave.

"Hi Spyro and Cynder, welcome back maybe I should say." Hypter said with a smile as he sat near a cosy fire. "Hmm, the cave isn't much bigger than last time, you think that us three will be able to sleep here with all the package as well?" Cynder asked as her gaze hovered around the cave.

"Hah, you haven't seen the changes I have done here yet." Hypter said as he moved to the side, revealing a corridor into the middle of the mountain. "If you follow me I will guide you to your bedroom." Hypter said as he made a gesture with his paw for them to follow.

"Will we have our own bedroom?" Spyro asked since it wasn't long ago he was there, he wondered how much Hypter had been able to dig out. And he was amazed by what Hypter had been able to accomplish in that short period of time.
