A LOVE OF DARKNESS AND LIGHT

"I still don't understand what I'm doing here," A young boy complained as he sat on the other side of the long rectangular table. "I only mowed her lawn a few times a month. Does that really entitle me to part of her will?"

"Apparently that was enough. Though I do have to admit that I am curious as to why myself. Will and I saw her a lot more often than you ever did." A much older boy said that sat across the table from the first.

"It probably had to do with her..."

"I see that all the attendees have arrived." A man said interrupting Will. The man was wearing what looked to be a very fancy gray suit that fit him as well as a custom one and had polished black shoes to match walked into the room and set a large brown briefcase down at the head of the rectangular table. "I wont dilly dally about the details of your grandmothers death, as I'm sure that you've all known about her mysterious death." All three boys slowly dropped their head and nodded.

"The investigation is still ongoing as to what caused her death." Will said as he took a long breath and looked back at the lawyer. "I just wish that they could tell us something." To which all three boys nodded as well as the lawyer.

"I hope that as well as she was a good client of mine for several years. Though I do believe that we wont have to wait long before we hear something." He said as he opened up the briefcase that he'd just set down on the table and started shuffling some papers around within it. "As for the will. The three of you were listed as the only beneficiaries upon her death." He pulled out a paper, held it up to eye level, then pulled out a pair of reading glass, and put on the glasses. "To my eldest grandson Will, I bequeath my estate and all therein to you as I know you've got a knack for the reality business and will greatly benefit from my vast estate."

There was a dramatic pause as everybody turned to look at Will and he nodded, accepting the arrangement. Will was, not only the oldest of the three boys, but also a real-estate wiz. No matter what type of house you had you had your eye set on, he could always get you to look at another and even buy that house. I guess you could say, 'He was one of those guys who could sell ice to an Eskimo.'

A cough brought all the boys attention back to the lawyer as he slid a piece of paper across the table as well as a pen that'd been attached, over to Will. "If you accept said statement, please sign on the dotted line and I'll hand over the deed to her estate to you." Will picked up the paper and studied it for a good five minutes until he was satisfied, then with a nod he signed the paper, finally tossed the paper and pen back to the lawyer. The lawyer took the document in-hand, read it over a few times, nodded, and switched the paper for a deed which he slid across the table to Will. He picked up the paper and studied it for a while, nodded again, folded the paper to place it in his vest pocket of his jacket, and leaned back in his chair.

"The next part pertains to Jonathan. I bequeath to you my vast fortune to use as you see fit." The lawyer pulled out another piece of paper and slid it across the table to him. Jonathan was a financial wiz. He could play the stock market like a card counter at a casino. He knew just when to fold or to call a stock of an investment. Jonathan looked over the paperwork for a while until he nodded at what it said, and signed the document to which he slid back over to the lawyer who exchanged it with another document that was slid down to him. Jonathan looked over this document with the same scrutinizing eye he'd just done with the previous document.

"And last but not least, Lucian. I bequeath to you my two cats, Polgara and Morgana. Please take good care of them as I know that they both have a bond with you that I haven't seen them share with anybody else." The lawyer said as he finally set down the document and looked over at Lucian. As a mater of fact, everybody turned to look at Lucian who had a very bewildered look upon his face.

"I don't understand. Both my older brothers get these vast inheritances while I just get stuck with her two funny looking cats? What's the deal here?"

Both the older brothers could only laugh at their youngest words as they knew that this would probably be the outcome. "I think it's because you haven't really amounted to anything Lucian." Will said as he was the first to come off his laughing fit.

"Will is right Lucian. You've not even been out on your own in the world for more than a month." He said as he referred to the fact that Lucian had only just recently moved out of their parents home for the first time. "Whereas Will and I have been living on our own, successfully, for such a long time now that we've amounted to quite a lot." Jonathan couldn't help but to start laughing again as Will quickly joined him in his laughter. "Who knows. Within time you may amount to something great and something in the will shall be bequeathed to you."

Everybody turned to the lawyer who'd just closed his briefcase and shook his head. "There is nothing left within the will to bequeath to Lucian in that or any other event. Her estate has been given to Will, the fortune to Jonathan, and the two cats to Lucian."

Lucian jumped to his feet which flung the chair backwards and land with a heavy noise upon the ground. "What about all those cars that she owned? O...or all those stocks..." Will knocked on the table which caught Lucian off guard.

"Within the document that I was given, all those vehicles now belong to me as they reside upon the estate." Will said with a smirk.

"And all those stocks that you mentioned, are apart of mine." Jonathan said as he pulled out his own paper and waved it in the air.

"Though who knows little brother," Will pulled out his own document and tapped it upon the table. "If you're a good boy and do something for me, I might just let you have one of them. I could use a good gardener if your interested." He started laughing as he knew that Lucian had always hated doing gardening. It took a stern look from their mother to make him go over to his grandmothers home to mow her vast lawns as the gardener had long since disappeared as well.

"Or you could come along with me and be my errand boy, and I might just give you a few bucks to buy lunch every now and then." Jonathan said as he too followed in Will's laughter.

'Tsk. Damn assholes.'

(TIME LAPSE)

Lucian cursed for the 10th time that day as he held both critter carriers in his hands as he made his way home. Why was he the only one to get such a lame inheritance from his grandmother whereas his older brothers got vast fortunes? He looked down at each of the carriers and part of his face scrunched up in anger. And on that note of his pathetic inheritance, why did he have to get some messed up cats anyways? Both the cats were pretty normal for short furred cats, except for their overly large heads, and some kind of strange purple spiral fur that ran from the base of their tails to the tips.

He stopped along the street, set both carriers down on a fence and looked inside. Other than their strange markings on their tails they looked pretty normal. Polgara was a white cat that loved to curl up on his lap with him when he was allowed to come inside after mowing his grandmothers vast lawn and Morgana was a black that would constantly run around the house knocking things over. Both cats looked to be asleep at the moment and Lucian honestly debated with himself whether or not to just go by the local animal shelter and drop both of them off. Though that though had crossed his mind for the fifth time that day, he couldn't seem to go through with the idea. So picking up the carriers again he continued on his way home.

Once he finally came in sight of his home, he took a long sigh and smiled to himself. "Home sweet home." He said as he looked up at the large apartment complex. The place wasn't all that great, but for finding a place with such a cheap rent, close to many places to work and such, he considered himself lucky. Another few minutes found him opening the door to his studio apartment and set the two carriers down on his coffee table. "Welcome to your new home. Please don't wreck the place." He said with a laugh as he opened up the two carriers.

The first to emerge was the black Morgana as she took a few sniffs of the air, then retreated to the back of her cage with a strange yowl. Obviously not really much caring for her new surroundings or the new smell of the place. Polgara on the other hand just stared up at him from within her cage, almost as if she were expecting him to do something.

After looking between the two for a while to see if they were going to do something, he just shrugged his shoulder and remembered the last part of the deal with the cats. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a medium sized manila envelope and turned it over a few times. "It seems like their's several things inside of it." He was about to open the flap to the envelope when his cell phone went off. Not thinking anything other than what his cell phone was going off for, he threw the envelope away somewhere and quickly picked up his phone. Flipping it open he saw that the calendar function was going off and he quickly accessed it. "Damn it, I'm late. I've got to get to work." He said in a rush as he quickly clipped the phone onto his hip and looked back at the carriers.

"Now don't go wrecking up the place while I'm gone you two. If you do that, I'll make sure to bring you two back something nice to eat tonight." He said as he reached on over to one of the counters in the apartment and grabbed up his gloves before he left. His current job was working at a seasonal position, as a Pumpkin salesman. People would come on over to purchase their pumpkins from the place, then he would take them over to their vehicles to load them. He mostly worked for tips but he would often be called on over to the registers to help with ringing up the sales as well. The pay wasn't all that great since it was a seasonal position, but he was always the most well rounded individual which made him a decent dollar for all his skills.

Once Lucian's day was done, he pocketed his tips and headed off to the local grocery store to pick up the things he would need for his two new house mates. Not knowing what to buy exactly for their everyday needs, he consulted a courtesy clerk at the local grocery store and was able to make some half way decent purchases for the two cats awaiting his return back home.
