The reverberations from my boots echoed in the cavernous chamber of the warehouse. Whatever those things were, they were howling and screaming with a luster equally beautiful as it was terrifying. I realized one thing that was inescapably true about my boots; they were not meant to be run in. I regretted choosing them in that moment because I couldn't run as fast as I normally could. But rather than get something sensible and practical like Iz, I had to choose the ones that looked coolest and best for ass-kicking. I'm not the brightest pup out there.

I heard the distinct scraping of the claws on the metal of the catwalk. I ran in the exact opposite direction of Iz and that worried me. I promised to protect Isaac no matter what. Nothing would stop me, not even these... things. With that in mind, I turned the corner at the catwalk and proceeded to go into a small hallway. On the right was a small staircase that led down and to my left the same stairs continued up. Running on adrenaline and instinct, I went down and pounded the door to the next room open. Inside stood another three of these... hounds.

The fur was jet black and natted. Their size must have been easily six feet from head to tail and had enormous, blood-stained teeth. They were fighting over a femur with aggressive growls until I burst in. Their attention shifted to me and I saw the redness that actually was dripping from their eyes. Their skin and fur seemed stretched and pulled out like it was going to snap at any moment. In some areas, it actually had. The muscles themselves were visible and bulbous because they were bursting from the skin. Turning on my heel, I ran out the door and to the left, running to the hounds that were chasing me originally.

I couldn't even think about what I was doing, I pushed my way through the hounds as best I could. One of them grabbed me by my leg and pulled me back down. I kicked and screamed, before taking the knife from my pocket and driving it into the throat of the hound that snapped at my feet with its rows of teeth. It made a guttural, noise of agony and blood squirted all over my face. I kicked it off, taking the knife with me and stepped on the face of a low-standing hound to jump up to the stairs. The pain in my feet was increasing as I ran, feeling tight and cramped in the biker boots.

At the top of the staircase in the hallway I found a door wide open with slightly more brightness than the dim red lights allotted for. I dived in and slammed the door, putting the small lock it had on, needing to find something else to bar the door with. The room appeared to be an office with papers scattered everywhere and a large, mahogany desk in the middle of the room. Grabbing a corner, I dragged it slowly to the door and shoved it as far against it as it would go. I was safe for the time being, but I needed to find a better place to go. I needed a plan.

And I had to find Iz. ...First I needed to get some light back on.

I pulled my flashlight out from the side pocket of my backpack and turned it on, pointing around to get a better view. The office was bare without the desk to fill it and the light that had drawn me in had come from a large window on the left that led to an overseer's platform for the plant. There were two large, slanted windows on either side that created almost a diamond shaped hallway. On the right I was able to see a generator that appeared in adverse conditions. The entire room was painted in the ominous red glow that the rest of the plant had but the lights pulsed bright and dim. "Is it... breathing?" I panted. On the left was the area with the catwalks where Iz and I got separated. I pointed the light farther down the corridor to see that it led to a blank wall.

"Shit. Now what?" I sighed, and turned around, looking in desperation when I heard Isaac cry out my name. I looked to the window right and saw Isaac being chased by the hounds. I knew that I couldn't help him but I knew that I had to. He was going to run to the wall and be trapped. They would corner him and he would be eaten by the fangs of the grotesque beasts and I would lose him again -- this time forever. I knew that no matter the cost to me... I had to help him. "Fuck! No!" I pounded on the divider separating the glass panels hard. "Isaac!" I screamed, but he couldn't hear me. "Son of a Bitch! Why can't I-"

I don't know why I didn't see it before but there was a small control panel to my left that controlled a crane system above the floor of the plant. I saw the crate that was being suspended perfectly above the hounds... It was risky but I might be able to save Isaac.

...As long as he didn't move at all.

"Please, God, don't move." I said, pressing the button marked Release. The crate released itself from the claw and fell onto the backs of the hounds with a crunch. Isaac jumped back and, I can only assume, nearly shit himself in the process. He looked up at me and I saw both anger and relief in his eyes. That was perfectly fine with me. He was safe.

But I wasn't safe anymore. The hounds broke through the lock of the door and would be here any moment.

"Fuck!" I cried, debating on my next plan. There were two immediate options: Jump out the window on the right and get back to Isaac or go out the left and get to the generator.

But then I couldn't keep an eye on Isaac. The group of hounds broke through the desk and I dived out the window on my left, and fell to the floor below, hitting a small stack of cardboard boxes, groaning as they crumbled under my weight and my ass hit the ground.

"Ow. Ow." I looked up and saw the hounds stare down at me, the blood from their eyes dripping to the floor at my feet. "Fuck you!" I said, holding up a single finger at them. They howled angrily and advanced toward me, preparing to jump. But a rock to the side of the head of the front pack diverted them and they ran back for the staircases. Then I heard another growl and saw four of them growling at me.

"Oh, c'mon! Can't you give a guy a break?" I screamed, rushing at them, stabbing the nearest one in the eye and spinning to slice another. "You bitches!" I cut another one, but they wouldn't stop. They resisted everything. "Fuck you!" I cut another one before it bit me and I dropped my knife. With no other options, I picked him up and he howled in surprised anger. He fought back and bit at me. One of the dogs grabbed my leg hard, teeth sinking in and drawing blood. I yelped hard but shook him off, throwing the hound in my arms at him. It landed on its companion with a terrifying screech as it bent over backwards. I broke his back. The other hounds looked scared. They backed away, scared of what I would do to them.

Grabbing the nearest I snapped its neck. I don't know what got over me. What kind of blood lust it would create but I just had to break them.

In the back of my mind I thought of Bane breaking Batman's back.

...I did much worse to them. I was a monster. But I was alive, and they were dead at my feet, leaving me with bitten arms and leg. I picked up the fallen blade and wiped it off.

"Jason!" Isaac's voice echoed, seemingly far away. "Help!"

"Hang on, I'm on my way!" I took off running into whatever other hells lurked in this god-forsaken place.
