Chapter 3: "Baby-sitting"
That day, I was astonished by the dream I had. Could it be true? Did the hatchling really use my dreams to communicate with me? A princess? What should I do with the egg? I knew what should be done, but it was impossible, since I am a male, I couldn't just go and sit on top of that egg until it hatched.
I didn't give much importance to the subject, but as days passed, the dreams became more frequent, and long, and of course, wilder. A strange sensation filled my heart, and I was uneasy about it. I needed to find help.
The 5th day after finding the egg, I decided to act. I didn't have much knowledge about gryphons and how they cared their offspring, I just knew that they laid eggs, and their physical appearance. So, I started to investigate about 'em in my library first.
I moved through long corridors and steep stairs until I was in the middle of the mountain. I pushed the carved stone doors - they were magnificent, and were decorated with dragon images and strange inscriptions I had made about 200 years before - and shouted "Lumos!" The diamond lamps that hung from the ceiling lit, glowing intensely, as the sun. I walked to the "Science of life" section and began scanning the texts. Scroll after scroll, book after book. I began loosing hope and my mood began to decay.
After two hours of fruitless research, I left the library grunting and slamming the doors after me. I went outside and flew down to the gardens, and walked to a small hut, where the oldest of my servants lived.
I knocked the door three times and a shaggy voice answered. "Come in!"
"Grandpa" I said, since I had affection for him "I need to talk with you"
"You sound disturbed, kid, what troubles your heart?" He answered
"Remember the storm a few days ago, grandfather?
"Of course I do, it ruined my precious tulips, why you ask that?"
"Because that day I found something that has disturbed me"
"And what is it?"
"An egg" I stated.
"An egg?" He asked surprised, "What kind of egg?"
"A gryphon's egg; It happened this way..." And I told him my adventure
"I see" he glanced at me reflexively, "I understand"
"Understand what?" I asked confused.
"You carry a big burden, kid, If that gryphon lady gave you that egg for you to take care of it is because is very important to keep that egg safe". He picked up his pipe and lit it, and after what seemed hours, he asked "Anything else kid?"
"Yes, how can I raise the hatchling?"
"All what I know is that you must "baby-sit" the egg before it hatches, just that."
I sighed unsatisfied and said: "Thank you grandpa, I must go."
- "Take care of yourself son!!" he yelled, and waved his hand right after I took of. I waved goodbye in return.
"Great" I spat out while I flew around the mountain. I was moody, my only hope, and nothing!! I was furious.
I flew back to my house, and straight to the bedroom. I knew where to go! When I visited Kingdom of Lore, I heard by some pedestrians that Lore's library was the biggest library in the zone (unfortunately they haven't seen mine, or that's what I thought), so I decided to go and give it a try.
Once in Lore, I wandered through the streets, admiring the buildings and some really sexy dragonesses that walked past me, trying to find the library. I walked by all the places Hana had shown me in my last visit, but nothing.
Precisely when I thought everything was lost, Hana and Tim came walking around a corner. Hana was eating five scoops of ice cream on a cone, and Tim was carrying a basket with fruits and vegetables.
"Xilluminum!", Tim said surprised, "What brings you here?".
"Thanks god I found you!" I answered relieved, "I'm in a hurry, and I must find Lore's Library, do you know where is it?"
"Yes, it is a large white building with a huge golden book on top of it, next to the courtyard" Tim said.
"Thank you so much, you've been of great help!" I answered cheerily, and I ran through the streets towards the library.
Tim and Hana returned home.
The building came into view some blocks before reaching it, and it was really enormous. The golden book atop the building reflected sunlight beams in every direction, and it shone brightly. "Oh my god!" I exclaimed, "Those peasants were true, it is the biggest library I've ever seen!"
I walked into the library marveled by the artwork displayed in the walls and ceiling: some were beautiful paintings, and some others were weird sculptures.
After asking an old woman where I could find books about gryphon caring, I started again to shift books and read text after text, scroll after scroll and book after book. My hunger for knowledge was enormous. I wanted to learn everything I could about gryphons; something very deep in my heart told me to do that.
So there I spent reading hours, until it was time to close the library. The sun had already disappeared by the western hills, and a few stars could be seen in the sky. Venus shone brightly above the horizon.
I had learned too much about gryphons that day: First of all, they hunted for food, just as dragons do, next that gryphons lay eggs (I didn't knew that, lol) and usually the number of eggs they lay is 1 or 2 eggs. The females are in charge of nursing the egg until it hatches, usually two months after the egg has been laid. During that time, sexual desire is "deleted" and the male must feed his mate during that time. The female does nothing but sit atop the egg and check constantly the temperature, and move the egg so that it is warm in all spots.
I was walking now through the streets of Lore, and I didn't know where to go, I was thinking on what to do to make that egg hatch. I imagined myself asking Hana to sit on the egg: "Hum... Hello! ... And she did. We flew back home, to a room atop the mountain, where a gigantic bed laid there. It had black silk mantles and geometric patterns knitted with golden thread. The room had a scent similar to roses. A pair of swords hung from a wall, and in the other, a portrait of an enormous blue dragon that seemed to look at both of us.
"So, what's your name?" The dragoness asked me.
"You may call me XiLluminum" I answered, then asked too "and what's your name, sweetie?"
"You may call me Diamond, cutie"
"Nice name, sweetie. What if we mess up this room together?" I coed, and then kissed her.
