Enchanting Desires

Ch.3

Kiran woke suddenly to a noise from the other side of the fire. He looked over and saw Lutira thrashing in her sleep, and screaming,

"No, NO, please don't hurt my daddy, please....AHHHH!!!" She sat up still screaming and panting hard. She looked over at Kiran, "Sorry, just a bad dream. They happen often, but never this vivid before.

"It's quite alright. Take some time to calm down and then we will get moving. Best not to stay here any longer"

"Wait, didn't you put the shield up before we went to sleep? Why do we have to move?"

"I did put the shield up, but it wasn't as powerful as the last one, it wouldn't have kept all that screaming you were doing."

"I'm sorry"

"Don't worry about it. At any rate we need to get moving, it will be light soon." They began to break the camp, Kiran carried nothing it seemed, but Lutira noticed that he always had what he needed. He was now carrying a staff she hadn't seen him with yesterday. Lutira put it out of her head, and finished packing her things. Kiran was waiting patiently for her, ready to be moving. They set off at a brisk walking pace.

"Like I said last night, its 17 miles to Durintin, I plan on being there by evening. I will have to explain to you your training while we walk." He reached into his coat and pulled out a small leather-bound book. "Take this, and read it. It belonged to your father, and was his journal during his training. He tossed the book to Lutira.

"Th-this belonged to my father? How did you get it?"

"He gave it to me shortly before he disappeared, he said I would know what to do with it when the time came. I believe now is the time."

Lutira rubbed the worn leather fondly, "Thank you, I will memorize its every word."

"Not now you won't, I need to explain a few rules to you. One, you can never use magic in the view of others. Never let anyone see you cast, nor let them hear you chant. Two, know your limits, do not attempt spells that exceed your current training level. And three, most importantly, never use magic to kill an innocent. It is considered one of the most terrible crimes that can be committed by a Magi. Magic is a gift from the gods, abusing that gift will bring you nothing but misfortune. You must always consider these rules before you cast."

Lutira nodded in understanding, "I would never harm anyone without a reason. My father taught me that. And I know magic is forbidden in these lands." Kiran nodded.

"Yes, in these lands, but where we are going, it is not. Magic can be freely used whenever and wherever. Because in that land, all are magi. Now on to some practical information."

They walked along the path to Durintin, all the while Kiran talked about the history of magic, how the gods came to the people of the land and gifted them with magic. Of the rules and laws that govern magic use, and various chants and triggers. He taught her about the elements, and how each one felt when called upon. By the time the sun was high in the sky, Lutira's head was bursting with all the new information. But she was eager to learn, and did not complain. She saw magic as a way to carry on just one more piece of her father, one more way to keep his memory alive within her. As the sun was getting low in the sky, Kiran stopped to allow them to rest before carrying on.

"I will put the shield around us now for privacy." He said the chant and she felt the same warmness surround her. He turned to face her. "I want to see what you have learned."

Lutira nodded but said nothing, she was still trying to sort all the information out in her head. Fire leapt into Kiran's paws, "Show me fire" Lutira concentrated and held out her paws, "Ignis!" Flames leapt into them.

"Very good, now" He froze the flames instantly, "Show me water" Lutira watched the fire in her paws for a moment then, "Unda!" The flames turned into ice. Kiran watched her closely, "Good, Now show me earth" The water in his paws melted instantly. The dirt at his feet started to move and formed into a perfect sphere which came to rest in his paws.

Lutira watched him carefully, noticed every detail. "Terra!" The earth at her feet formed itself into a sphere exactly like the one Kiran held. "Very good, now for the last one" He dropped the ball of earth but it didn't hit the ground, it floated slightly above the ground, he made it rise without blinking or looking away from Lutira. "Show me air"

Lutira looked at the ball of earth, "Aer" She whispered, and the ball began to float, she moved it around herself, and then let it drop to the ground where it returned to dirt once more.

"Very good, it seems my assumption was right. You do have great potential."

Lutira looked at him and shook her head, "I have heard that even the novice magi can summon waves that destroy towns, fires that burn everything. I can barely summon some fire to my paw."

Kiran shook his head, "Not even the most experienced of magi can summon all the elements. Most can only summon one or two. And it takes them months to summon it the first time, and years to master. No, you have great potential indeed."

Lutira thought about this for a while. She could do things that even the most powerful of magi could not. It was just crazy. She didn't know what to think, everything had happened so fast. Who was this person that Kiran called master? She decided she didn't want to know, after all, she was only following him to find out more about her father. Whoever this guy was, she assumed he knew her father as well.

Kiran stood up and flicked his bushy tail, "Durintin is just over that next hill, let's get moving. It will be dark soon." Lutira stood up and went over to him, "Why are you so on edge?"

Kiran looked at her, "I don't like cities, too many people and I don't like people. It makes me nervous.

Lutira giggled at him, "You are nervous? Hahaha. You so mysterious, so powerful, and you're scared of a crowd?" She continued to laugh until she caught the look in Kiran's eye. She could see waves of energy surrounding him, dark and ominous, rolling off him. "I-I'm sorry...I didn't know it bothered you so much"

"It's not that it bothers me, it's that you act just like them. You laugh at others misfortune, you make fun of someone's fears." He forced himself calm, the waves of energy fading. "I have my reasons, now respect them or I'll tell my master you had an unfortunate accident on the way there"

"You can't do that!"

The waves of energy surrounded him once more, "Watch me" he snarled. They stared at each other, tails flicking back and forth. Waves of energy surrounded them both, swirling around their bodies.

Out of the trees on the side of the path came a female voice "Now, now Kiran, you don't want to kill a defenseless novice do you? Especially one our master values so highly?"
