My first attempt at a story, well anything really. Critique would be like, but try to keep it as positive as possible please. As you probably guessed, Pokemon and anything based associated with Pokemon is not mine.

The sun was dipping below the horizon and the sky shown a bright orange. A small house in Viridian City had its lights on, and through the window a teen could be seen, surrounded by people. A cake was set on the table.

"Thanks for this mum, you shouldn't of," said the teen.

"It was nothing Brody, really," said a mid-age, short woman.

"And thank you for coming Mr. and Mrs. Miller. It means a lot to have friends here."

"It was no problem. I had thought that Isabelle would have been here though, she was rather excited to come."

"Don't worry about Izzy," said the teen. "She'll make it. Let's cut the cake while we wait.

His mother pulled the cake aside and started to slice it. Brody looked over at the dining room mirror propped up on the wall. ~16~ he thought. ~Wow.~ He looked himself over. Sandy blonde hair and light hazelnut brown eyes. He had a fairly muscular build from working in his mothers shop all day. He was also tall, taller than most kids his age. The trait came from his dad; nobody on his mom's side of the family was tall.

The thought pierced his heart like dagger like it did every time he thought of his dad. A Pokémon League official, he had been stationed at the local gym when he met Brody's mum. A few years ago, his father had vanished without a trace. People rumored that he had left his wife for somebody else, because that was the only explanation. There was no evidence of it, and Brody wouldn't believe it.

Something brushed past Brody's leg, stirring him from his thoughts.

"Hey there Major. How are you doing?"

The pet Growlithe put his front paws on Brody's leg and barked. Brody scratched the pokemon on his favorite spot, at the base of the neck. He smiled down at the pooch. Major had become part of the family soon after his dad had vanished. Brody had been alone on the porch when he heard a rustling underneath him. After investigating, he found a shivering, starving Growlithe. Brody brought the pokemon inside, and it quickly became part of the family.

"Brody, come over here and eat some cake before it's gone."

His mom's comment brought Brody back to the present. He joined the group for some cake and the party continued.

After a while, the party died down, and everybody retired to the living room for drinks and idle chat. After a quiet spell, Brody's mum spoke up.

"I would like to make an announcement. Brody, after a lot of consideration, I would like you to go on you Pokemon journey. You been putting it off for me, and I appreciate that, but the business is stable now. I don't need your help as much as I used to too run the store. If I do need help, I have the Miller's right next door, and I also have David."

Oh David. He had become the official at the Gym when his father vanished. He and Brody's mom had started dating a year ago. He had come to work in the shop with Brody and his mom when the Gym leader vanished. They had become close over the past couple months, so it made sense to Brody for them to want him out of the house.

"What would I do for a starter? League rules state that you must be 14 years or younger to receive one."

"Well you could take Major with you; you too are so close you could be brothers."

Brody smiled, it was true, they were rather close.

"Alright you're on."

The chitchat continued for a little while, but the Millers eventually had to leave. As his mom escorted them across the yard to their house, Brody waved from the doorway.

"Hey Brody."

The voice came from a short redhead sitting in the corner of the porch.

"Hey to you too Izzy. How's it going?"

"Eh, same as usual. Happy birthday, by the way."

"Thanks."

"I didn't know what to get you though..."

Brody walked over a sat next to her. He brushed a couple hairs away from her face and smiled.

"You being here is enough."

Izzy smiled and laid her head on Brody's shoulder. Brody smiled to himself. He had his dream back, and he had the girl. This had turned out to be a good birthday after all.
