Story by Modder on SoFurry

This is the introduction to a series of stories I hope to start. Yeah I wrote one of the chapters before the intro but I think there will be more to come, who knows, we'll see when I run out of things to write. The purpose of this chapter is to really introduce a few caracters and the building itself.

Disclaimer: While portions of this series are based on real life, all places, persons, and events are largely fictionalized with no portion being a direct description of anyone or anything. The Callsign 49 series is probably used by some stations around the world, I have no correlation with any of them, thier apparatus, or thier personale. The events in these stories are based on my life and the life I would have liked to have had (read DarkSerpent's story Unexpected for my story), but again, no direct descriptions, names, or locations. There is also no Hightown Fire or EMS services that I know of.

Comments, ratings and input are always apreiciated.

Theres always a warm feeling as I pull into the lot, driving past the bays towards the personal vehicle parking.

This is my home. I suppose anyone in a fire deparment or EMS service can say that thier home station is thier home, but for me it actually is. I moved in on a bunker program a few years ago. It was a pretty good deal, a free 2 bedroom apartment in exchange for working for the EMS service, not a bad deal for a paramedic just out of college.

Parking the Jeep, I walked in the side door. Most folks prefer going in through the front, and not dealing with the noise and smell of the garage. For me though its always kind of comforting, plus you never know who you might run into.

Slipping in the side, the first truck I always see is my ambulance, 49-57, kind of comforting, checking the lines everthing is how it should be.

Moving down the line the other two ambulances 49-53 and 45-56, then the firetrucks 49-22, 49-27, 49-31, 49-33, 49-34, 49-26, and 49-38. Its not a small station, not by any means, then again, not a small city.

After the bays, it's nothing special, downstairs theres a meeting room, a couple offices, a dining room, living room, and the main kitchens. Upstairs are the apartments each fairly similar to my own, across the hall from those are the on call rooms, small bedrooms for the members on the night shift who don't live in the firehouse full time.

Walking into the dining room its a normal cast of caracters, a small mouse named Nicole, the EMT I work with John, Mike, and the Fox firepolice capitan, who I could swear was 102. Across the room was our Batallion chief Jim, talking with the EMS capitan Brian. Wandering over and sitting down with the Nicole and the others I couldnt help but muse over how a small group of people could get so close, it sounds corny, but when you spend your working life and home life with the same people, they really do become your family.

Finishing up a quick dinner, provided by our wonderful station mother Michelle, I wandered upstairs, it had been a busy day off and there wasn't anything I had to do. Booting up my laptop I loaded up the video chat. Once it loaded I noticed his username online. Opening up a chat I couldn't help but smile, the big goofy, ever grinning face of the fox I loved poped up on the screen.

"Hey Babe"

"Hey, Man, how was the wedding?"

Adam was out of town, going to an old friends wedding on the other side of the country, I would have gone with him, but I had to work last night and I was on call tonight and noone could cover for me. Noone to cover for me, nothin I can do.

"Typical, the usual 'Here comes the bride, oh yay isnt she pretty, I do, I do, Smooch Smooch, YAYYY' bull crap followed by a dinner with a bajillion people I've never met"

"Aww, sorry I couldnt be there sweetness."

"Eh, the world goes on, so you're getting back tomarrow night?"

"Yeah, Can't wait, I gotta go though, its nearly two in the morning here and theres a brunch in the morning. Gotta get some sleep"

"Alright love, sleep tight, send the fellas my best in the morning."

Clicking out of the page, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt, I knew I couldn't make it when the invitation came in, but it still would have been nice to make it.

Clicking off the light I turned the radio up and turned the light off, it was only 10 pm but you never know when a call will come in, and sleep is important.
