#2 of The Chronicles of James Travant

The great war between the EUT and EU and their allies seemed a small skirmish compared to the pitched battle that the EUPD waged every day with the deadly Bladewielders. Having it's forces stretched to the limit to maintain the fight, the EU left the task of dealing with the Bladewielders to her highly trained Police Force and their newly inducted Kaynine unit, whom was already showing great promise in performing their duties with utmost prejudice.

This story will begin in the city-state of Berlin. Where an EUPD Rookie, directly out of Academy and on his second day of the job, is now returning home from a long day's patrolling.

Travis Savant cranked the stereo in his cruiser as he turned a sharp corner in the central city square. It was a nice day, the crisp autumn air bringing just the slightest chill to the centuries-old city which showed little sign of the Bladewielder infestation it harbored.

It seemed every square inch of the EU was now infested, but some city-states seemed to naturally hold back the tide, although there were sporadic hives here, Berlin was largely considered a "green" zone.

Travis sighed as he cracked his neck in an attempt to work out the stiffness and let off the gas to take another easy turn.

"I want a raise." He said flatly to no one in particular, the soft, entrancing ambient tunes he normally listened to when he drove didn't even seem to relax him today, it was just going to be a bad one, all around.

Thoughts adrift, Travis took the next turn a little quicker than was prudent and didn't have time to slow down before hitting a deep puddle from last night's rainfall, which of course had the effect of firing off a miniature tidal wave on the young woman passing nearby.

"Damn." Travis hissed, immediately bringing his cruiser to a halt and popping open the door. His knee-high black leather boots thumped against the pavement as he slipped from his seat and approached the woman, already pulling off his EUPD jacket.

"I'm terribly sorry about that miss, I'm afraid I was a bit distracted..." He began, offering the jacket to the now-soaked woman.

She shook with the cold water drenching through her clothes and into her bones. Brushing a strand of hair from her eyes and tucking it behind her ear with a very shy and short smile.

"Its okay, I guess. Didn't think that water would be so damned cold though, until it found it's way about showing me just how cold. I'm Tanya by the ...way." She lagged in her words as he put his jacket around her shoulders and looked up to him.

"Thanks." She was slightly shocked, for once not a jackass... and no awful pickup lines to follow suit either.

She glanced around and smiled, pulling the jacket tighter around her "So what's your hurry, umm..?"

"Savant, Travis Savant, European Police." The officer smiled, his arms dropped from helping her with the jacket to reveal the semi-armored tactical bodysuit he wore, with "E.U.P.D." emblazoned across his chest.

"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, and I'm in no hurry really, it's my second day and I just got off my shift."

He chuckled at his own inside joke. With the threat of the bladewielders always present, most non-Kaynine officers were lucky to survive the force beyond their first week.

Tanya's lips gave a smile and she even let out a quiet chuckle. "Already excited to be off the job, hmm? I can sympathize, but if this is your way of meeting meager ladies like me, you aren't going to get many friends. But I'll admit its original."

She winked and wrapped the jacket around herself tighter, she was trying to hide her shivering, tensing up her entire body to try and make it go away.

She didn't want to show how cold she truly was, and the wind wasn't helping any. "So where ya headin' to? Home?"

Travis smiled and scratched the back of his neck a bit. "Yeah, I suppose I was heading that way eventually, I was really just kinda driving with no particular direction in mind, although now that I've landed you in such a predicament, I would have to insist that you at least let me give you a lift home, it's far to cold to be out here in soaked clothes."

Tanya half smiled, "Rare to see such chivalry in these times."

She looked up to him, "I don't live more than 6 blocks from here, I wouldn't want to burden you in anyway, you must be tired after work."

She looked down the block as the wind started up again and wildly blew around them both, "Aren't you cold without your jacket? Here..."

She took off his jacket but held it to her chest. "I'll make a deal with you. You can drive me home if you'll accept coffee or the like from me. It's the least I can do after your courtesy to stop after such a situation."

Travis gave a small laugh that sounded almost nervous, or perhaps shy. "I s'pose that sounds like a deal, although I'm actually more of a tea drinker."

He turned on his heels and came around to the passenger door of the cruiser, at first pull the latch didn't seem to want to open, but after a good solid kick the door hissed right up as normal.

"Your chariot awaits." Travis joked, stepping aside and indicating the passenger seat with one hand.

Tanya giggled at the door's rebellion. "Good, 'cause so am I. I've got some green tea leaves, that is... if you are interested in green tea."

She smiled and gently put her hand on his chest before she smoothly glided her way into the passenger seat of the car, pulled her legs in and gently smoothed her clothing.

She looked up to him before he closed the passenger door. And as he walked around the car to get into the driver's seat she looked at the inside of the car. She liked it, it was comfortable. She could see why he could drive this car despite its rebellious door. Once he opened his door she smiled, "Nice car, I don't know why but it kinda suits you, but what do I know, I just met you."

"Most EUPD cruisers are customized to their driver's taste. Plenty of leg room and headspace, thanks." Travis shifted gears and popped the clutch, asking for Sonya's address and punching it into the nav station, the car began giving him generalized directions on the holo-screen in front of him as he drove.

"Not long now." He said after a few minutes of comfortable silence.

Tanya smiled looking out the side window then to Travis. "It's been a while since I've been in a car. I normally walk, when it's safe that is. It's a nice feeling."

She looked back out the window, "Maybe it wasn't a bad thing to be splashed after all..." She softly whispered to herself as her smile turned into a soft smirk.

"Here we are." Travis responded as he pulled up to the curb in front of the house that was indicated as hers on his screen.

"Aegis district, beautiful living." He commented as his door slid open and he stepped out to come around and open her door, albeit with another solid kick to convince it.

Tanya laughed, looking at him as the door opened, "Again with the chivalry. I'll be starting to think you are a cowboy or something pretty soon."

She laughed and gracefully got out of the car. The shelter from the wind had helped her to stop shivering, and his coat laying across her felt nice too.

She unlocked the door and looked back to him, "Ready to see my home? I'll prepare you, I love flowers, and the place has a few projects of art I'm working on."

She smiled and held the open in door for him as he stepped in and closed and locked the door behind him. She walked up two or three stairs and got to her real house door, one for protection, and one for privacy. It was how she liked it, she opened the door to reveal a bunch of different colors of roses, carnations, orchids, and many more flowers hanging, sitting, and generally invading every nook around the room. As well as a painting easel, and a sketching station.

"My humble, but spacious place, I personally favorite the view. Mind if I start a small fire to warm this place up a bit?" She turned to see him shake his head no while looking around her home, a small crack was open in her bedroom door revealing a canopy bed with black pull away lace curtains and a midnight blue silk sheets upon it. Midtone purple was splash painted on her walls and ceiling, this room had no windows, but was connected to the bathroom.

She managed to get the fire started and stood, looking at a picture of her hanging from a tree by her knees and all she had on was a black tight tank top and a pair of denim blue jeans.

"I remember a fun time like this.. I can't wait to see another day like this carefree one. Can't even remember which one of my fiends took it now... heh... I don't suppose it matters, most of them have passed on." She ran her fingers over it and turned to Travis. "So how about that tea, still want it?"

Travis smiled rather sadly. "We've all lost a lot of friends..." He answered quietly, nodding to her inquiry about the tea.

He admired the flowers sorted about him, knowing a few by name and most by look, he stepped slowly about a small comfort radius he created himself, just enough to let him see what he wanted, but not enough to make him seem as if he was prying through her things.

As Tanya left to get the tea in order he brushed his dark bangs out of his eyes and sighed, looking out the window to the district outside.

"I wish life could be so easygoing anymore." He mumbled to himself, mind in another place for the time being...
