Out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean lies an island. It is about one kilometer by two kilometers, very rocky and barren. Waves crash against the sides of it, the erosion over the years making the island shaped like a cone, point sinking into the ocean. No life grows there, and no one sets foot there. It is difficult to get there by air, and all but impossible to climb the cliffs. This island is so utterly unremarkable, that when discovered, cartographers didn't even bother putting it on maps, or even naming the place. It was a place, virtually non existant, and never aknowledged. However, there is a cavern on the island, long hollowed out by seawater. Inside this cavern is something that shouldn't belong on one of the most remote places in the world.

A building.

With an outer wall made of an inch of steel, and a single door, guarded by cameras, it was built into the island, and sank below the ocean surface. If one were on the island, no one would ever observe anything going in or out of the door, apart from one lone human, who came out every night to watch the sun rise over the endless expanse of water.

James ran down the corridor, panting heavily, a heavy radiation suit thrown over his nightwear. His boots slipped on the dirty floor, and he crashed to the floor. He picked himself up and hurried off again. He stopped at a green door, with a blue sign attached to the wall beside it. The sign had several symbols on it, the largest being icons indicating radiation and biohazard. James stopped outside it, taking a minute to catch his breath and to check that his suit was properly closed. He then opened the door, stepping into a small room, only about a meter wide. A dark black door made of lead on the opposite side of him. He felt his claustrophobia setting in as he stepped into the room, closing the door behind him.

He quickly pushed open the lead door, steeping through it into a room lit dimly with a yellow strobe. A few people in a similar garb to him were sitting at consoles, or reading through papers. Most however, were facing a large plastic window, silent as they stared through it. James walked over and his breath caught at the sight. Through the window, he could see a naked humanoid strapped down to a steel operating table, thick leather straps binding him down. The man was struggling hard, screaming out for someone to help him. The humanoid obviously wasnt a man, though. He was covered in a dark fur, almost jet black, his arms and legs ended in paws, with clear, sharp looking claws growing from stubby digits. The worst part was his face, twisted into something animalistic. His nose and mouth had been stretched out, to look like a dog's. Although it wasn't a dog.. it was an abomonation, a horrible twisting of human and canine features.

James watched with a mixture of fear, excitement and extreme pity as the creature struggled, roaring loudly, foaming at the mouth. His excitement evaporated as the creature started to slow, getting weaker and weaker, until it stopped moving all together. The radio inside his suit crackled, a woman's voice coming over it. "It didn't work.. Subject is deceased at 3:26 AM, march 18th... Cause was respitory systems becoming blocked. Subject was also suffering a cardiac arrest." James gave a long, sad sigh, trying to stop it from becoming a sob, before looking at the people around him. "Okay.. Its just another setback. Keep trying people.. We have got this far, we need to go all the way." James pressed his hand hard down on a red button on the wall next to the window, and then turned to leave. Behind him, the bindings retracted on the dead subject, and the table began to tip up, a hole opening at the end of it. The body slid down into the hole, and was dumped outside the facility, falling from the top of the island to be dashed against the rocks. It, like the hundreds of failed experiments before it, sank down into the water, never to be seen again.
