Journey to Another World 6 Ch. 1 "Just one more day until I've saved up enough to go on ahead and buy my own DSi." Kristy said aloud as she finished counting the bills that were stuffed away in a small rectangular manila envelope, then the whole thing was tucked away somewhere in her purse. "Though I'm thankful to god that I don't have to work for that perverted basturd." She sighed as she stopped walking and looked towards the sky. "I swear that he can't keep his eyes off my ass for a second when we were in school. It's almost like he's constantly undressing me with those creepy eyes of his." Kristy shivered a bit but stopped when she noticed that one of the clouds in the sky seemed to take an image of the backside of a familiar head of hair. "But don't you worry for a second big brother, I'm going to have the money to buy my own DS soon and then we'll be able to talk a lot more without risking damaging your DS any further than it already is." Just then the cloud seemed to rotate a little bit and when it'd finally turned she could see it resemble her brothers smiling face with his silly half smirk that always seemed to make her laugh for some reason. * * *

(Flashback)

  • * * Ever since the last time Kristy had used her brothers DS to talk to him, she'd wanted to do so more and more often, but when she'd finished talking with him the last time she'd noticed that one of the buttons was loose and when she tilted it just so...the button came right out of it's housing. Fearing for what might happen if she attempted to do so again would probably prove to much for it and it'd break all the rest of the way. With that in mind she finally set her mind on getting her own DS and use it to communicate with her brother through the wireless communication function. The only problem with that plan was that she didn't have a job to get the cash that she needed and her mother wasn't about to shell out the money in fear that the same situation would happen to her if she got it into her head to go walking one day in a lightning storm (As she stated a few nights back). With her mother totally against the idea, Kristy decided to seek out some kind of employment somewhere in town to earn enough money to purchase her own DS. There were three problems with that and all of which seemed to only push back her plans. The first was the fact that there were no more regular DS's in stock since Nintendo decided to update the handheld device to the DSi, which meant that the price had gone up another fifty dollars on top of what it'd cost to buy a regular DS light, the second was that all the current versions of the Pokemon game were out of stock at all the electronic gaming stores around town, and finally due to the economic crunch nobody was hiring for employees as well as everyone was looking for work. So before she could solve the first two problems, she needed to solve the third and that proved a little uneasy/easy to solve. It all came down to the fact that she needed a job and that the best place to kill a few of her problems with as few stones, was to work at the local Game Zone where they sold the DSi's and the Pokemon games. She knew the owner/manager fairly well as he'd often pass her in the halls of the school that they went to, as he would often try and ask her out on a date. 'I can't believe how many times he's asked me out. It has to be going on ten times already. Can't a guy take a hint? When a girl says no, she means no.' She giggled a little at how stupid the situation was but then stopped when she really started thinking about her problems. If she were to put in her application in there, there would be no doubt that he'd instantly snatch it up and hire her, but there was also the possibility that he'd try and black mail her into having a date with her 'for' a position there. That thought sent a shiver slowly down the back of her spine. She looked back up at the cloud and shook her head. 'Big brother would know of a way to use his own blackmail against him. Come on big brother, tell me what you'd do in a situation like this.' She thought as she saw him smile. It was at that moment that the wind shifted slightly and it looked like he was holding something up to his face. "What in the world? It looks like he's holding... That's it!" She yelled out with a smile as she recognized what the could was holding up to it's face. "Thanks a lot big brother. You've saved me and, potentially yourself, a lot of trouble." With that said she quickly ran home and grabbed the device that she'd seen her brother holding up in the clouds. * * *

(Flash Forward)

  • * * "Now let me get this strait Brendon. In order for me to work at the Game Zone, your going to blackmail me into having a few dates with you for a stocking position." Kristy said/asked as she sat across from Brendon as he held up his Starbucks coffee cup to his lips and took a very slow and pleasant drink from it as she enjoyed the foamy taste of her favorite drink there. "I wouldn't call it blackmail, per-say. I like to think of it as an, exchange." He placed down his coffee, reached across the table, and placed a hand over hers. "You see, we both get something we want. You get to get a job at the store where I work, so that you can buy that DSi that I know that you want, and I finally get a date with you. I think that that's a fair enough exchange." Kristy pulled away her hands from under his and snarled a bit at him. "Come now Kristy. You and I both know that nobody else is hiring right now, and, I'm the only person in town who can also get you that version of Pokemon that you want to badly." "But what about all the other employees at the Game Zone? I thought you were fully staffed. How are you going to employ me when you've already got so many people working for you already?" She asked as she looked at him and leaned a little more over the table, inadvertently showing off a little cleavage. Brendon smiled as he took a nice long look at her bust through the low cut top as he pretended to be taking a long drink from his coffee. "Not a problem. I'll just fire one of my employees there and then hire you to replace him." He reached on over, pulled out a napkin from one of the dispensers at the table, and dotted at his slightly bloody nose. "One of the perks of being a manager. I can fire anybody, any...time...I....want." That's when Kristy leaned back into her chair and gave him an exact copy of her big brothers goofy grins. "That's all I needed to hear." She said as she reached down below the table and their was an audible clicking sound. "Wait a minute. What was that noise?" Brendon asked as Kristy brought up a tape recorder and smiled on over to him. "My brother was always forgetting things when he was younger, so he started carrying around this little tape recorder with him to remind himself of things that he needed to do." She then replayed the whole conversation and then pocketed the device. "I remember once, a person tried to blackmail him into doing something that he knew was wrong and he just so happened to have his tape recorder on him that day." She got up out of her chair and placed both her hands on the table. "I think your Field manager will be very interested in hearing this." She stated as she brought up the device to her lips and gave it a quick kiss. Brendon quickly leapt to his feet with a very frightened look in his eyes and reached out to her as she turned and started to walk away. "Now wait just a minute. We can come to some sort of arrangement." Kristy stopped walking, turned to look over her shoulder, and scowled over at him. "Like what? You offer me a job at the Game Zone?" She turned the rest of the way around and placed her fists on her hips. "I don't think so. In order for me to work there, your going to have to fire someone there and I don't want that. It would probably be someone I know. I'm going to go strait to your boss and hand over this tape." She said in an angry voice then paused for a bit as Brendon's face started to go pail. "Who knows. Your boss may just give me a job in order to avoid a nasty lawsuit that you just put your company into." She walked on over and pushed him back into his chair. "You should've thought about this a lot more. I would've found a way to get you back for this and then gotten you fired from that job eventually." She started walking towards the exit but stopped right before the doors. "Be thankful it was me who's doing this. My brother would've taken you out back somewhere and beaten you to a pulp for trying to blackmail me." As she left the coffee shop she could almost swear that she heard the sound of someone falling down to their knees and start to cry. * * *

(Flash Forward)

  • * * "I still can't believe that they gave me his position as a reward for not bringing all this to the local cops." She giggled a little and started whistling a merry little tune. "Maybe it does pay to fight corruption in the work place." She was now laughing pretty hard as she remembered the day that that had happened and the look upon his face when they appointed her the new store manager. After a fairly long walk back home she opened the door to their family house to be first greeted by the smell of her mom's home cooking. 'Mom must be working on something special for dinner or something.' "Mom, I'm home." She said aloud after she'd closed and locked the door behind her. "In the kitchen dear." Her mother said which Kristy make her way on over to as she set her purse down on the counter. She saw the her mother was working at the stove with her back turned towards her. Making a little noise with her shoes, as not to scare her mother and get her burned, she walked over and gave her mom a kiss on the cheek. "Welcome home Kristy. How's my new manager doing?" Kristy walked over to the table, pulled out a chair, and sat down in it facing her mother. "A little worn out," She let out a sigh and slumped a little bit in the chair. "Had this one customer today that wanted to get a refund for a game that he'd nearly destroyed. He hadn't even had the game for two whole days before he came back in, wanting to be reimbursed for the thing." "Did you give him the refund?" Her mom asked as she turned and started to wipe her hands clean with a hand towel. "No. The problem was that the disk was totally destroyed mom." She took a long slow breath as she recalled the incident. "There is no way that that could've happened by accident. Even if the machine had eaten up the disk, like he claimed, those scratches were all over the place and not in a single circle like line like those of the previous complaints that'd come from those machines." "Still sweetheart. The disk couldn't be used any longer and..." She stopped in mid sentence as Kristy held up her hand. "I know what your going to say mom, and I completely understand that a manager has to do whatever it takes to keep the customer happy, but this was, different." She stopped in her story as she saw her mom turn towards the stove, dial down the burners, then take up a seat next to her to hear the reason why she'd refused the refund. "A friend of mine from school did the same trick. He had a game from a long time ago and it was his favorite. Over time, the game became a bit overused and started to get a bit beat up and eventually it wouldn't work at all. So he came up with this scam to fool the manager of the local game store." She saw her mother nod to her to continue the story. "What he did was, he went on over to the game zone, bought the exact same game, then returned a few days later with the ruined game, and demanded a refund for the ruined game." She stopped in mid story to see that her mother had a bit of a confused look on her face. "In short, he just got the game for free once it was all over with." Her mom's eyes went wide a bit in realization and a smirk slowly appeared at the corner of her mouth. "I must say, that that right there is a pretty sneaky thing to do, but..." "But what?" "But what if this new customer was telling the truth? What if that game really was damaged by something and all he wanted was a refund. He would be really mad and probably called into your district manager to complain." Kristy let out a bit of a giggle and then nodded to her mother. "That may have been the case, if it weren't for the fact that he'd stuck the game into it's old box and inside that box was a slip of paper for the sale of the original game several years ago. Plus, the fact that that box had an insignia on it from a local movie rental place down the mountain was a dead giveaway of what he was trying to do." She started to laugh at that and she saw her mother shortly join her a little after-words. "He just tried to get a refund for a movie rental game from us. What an idiot. Did he really think that we wouldn't notice the insignia of a movie store on the box as well as on the disk?" With that, the two had a good long laugh at the kids expense/foolishness, then settled down to idle chatter as her mother served up their dinner of a salad with a bit of pasta. About half way through the dinner, Kristy stopped eating and started to push around her pasta a bit. "What's the matter sweaty. Lost your apatite?" Kristy put her fork down and took a long sigh. "Not really mom. Just remembering how much big brother loves pasta...and..." Tears started to leak down her face, then she placed both her hands over her eyes and began to bawl. A few days later, she walked triumphantly out of the Game Zone after her shift holding her new game and DSi. "After all that work, I've finally gotten my own DSi. Now I can go on ahead and talk with big brother again." Throwing the boxes and internal junk from the box into the trash, she quickly put the game into the system and booted it up. * * *

(TIME LAPSE)

  • * * It'd been several weeks between the time when she'd gotten her DSi and things were progressing fairly smoothly within the game. "Now that I've got my team up to a decent level, I should be able to try to talk with my brother again." With a happy tune and a smile on her lips, she clocked out for the day and quickly went on over to the hospital that her brother was staying at. The only problem with that was that when she got to the coma word, the whole place was in a panic. Doctors were running about the whole place and nurses were screaming one thing or another, but that all paled in comparison as she saw that they were all running around her big brothers bed, and the curtains were pulled around it. "I don't understand it. Once second he's fine...then the next, he starts having internal bleeding. We've got to get him to the ER as soon as possible." Someone said in a fearful tone as more and more people started to rush about the room. It was only a moment later that the curtain was pulled back and she saw what the whole fuss was about. Her older brother looked to be bleeding out from his mouth as well as out of his tear ducts in his eyes. She had seen her brothers eyes after they'd changed to that horrifying color, but to actually see him crying blood...that was just plain creepy. "OUT OF THE WAY!" Someone yelled which caused her to jump, then quickly move out of the way as they wheeled her brother out of the room and down the hall. She watched dumbfounded at the whole scene. This was definitely not something that she was expecting when she'd decided to come and see her brother that day. As if almost by fates, funny sense of humor, her new DSi fell out of her hands and banged upon the floor, causing her to jump once more. This seemed to bring her back into reality as she quickly started to look around the room and take all that'd just happened in. 'Wait a minute, what's going on here? I just came on over to check up on my big brother and here I find out that he's...' Her mental thought quickly caught in her mind as she started to see the bigger picture and quickly rushed on over to where her brother's DS was. After searching around for it for a little while she eventually found it laying against the wall, with the power cord barely plugged in. the red light was on and she could see that the red light on the DS was slowly beginning to fade out. 'Oh no!' She quickly reached into where the cord connected to the DS and pushed it all the way back into the thing. The light quickly got brighter and she took a long sigh of relief. "They must not of seen that the power on his DS was almost dead," She said aloud as she slowly took a long breath and smiled to herself. "Though now that it's plugged back into the power outlet, he should be just fine." * * *

(Shortly After)

  • * * The doctors slowly wheeled the large young man back into the coma ward, pushed his bed back into position that they'd just pulled him out of, and hooked him back into all his machines that were next to his bed. The boy looked as if most of the color in his face had been drained out, but that was slowly fading as he was now getting a steady supply of blood from an overly large bag hanging on a hook that was suspended over his head. "Damn this kid. He just loves to keep us on our toes." Someone said as the last of the heart rate attachments were attached to the boys chest and everyone had stepped away. "That's because you didn't listen to what I had to say the last time I was here." Kristy said which got the few people who brought her brother back into the room to look at her with either a raised eyebrow or a huff. "I said that he needed to have his DS continuously hooked into a power supply or something bad might happen." Kristy walked back on over and held up her brothers DS to show them that the Red light of the DS. "This thing was almost out of power and it nearly shut off." A few of the people around the bed began to talk amongst themselves until one of them separated from the others and walked on over to take a closer look at her and the DS that she was still holding up. "Are you saying that, this thing has some sort of connection to this young mans health?" "Furthermore," Someone else cut in before she could answer the first mans question. "What do you think your doing down here in the coma ward young lady. This place is reserved for close relations or..." "I'm his younger sister." She finished for the other/older man as she gave him a sneer. "As for the first question, before I was so rudely interrupted, I believe so." She walked on over to the bed and placed a hand on her brothers shoulder. "This same thing happened a while back," She paused a bit as she took a bit of a breath and nodded down to her brother. "He was in really bad shape one day that me and my mom had come to visit. I noticed that his DS was running low on power and plugged it in, because I wanted to make sure that if he woke up that he'd have his DS to play right away." She looked back at the men. "When I'd plugged in his DS, he slowly started to get better and the doctors had no clue as to why or how it'd happened." All the doctors/nurses/ and a few other people who were looking in from the door did multiple double takes between the body and then back to the young girl. Many of which really only had one thing on their minds, 'Was this girl right?'
