#4 of The Broken

The Broken

Cold was the only thing the young man remembered as he fell through the darkness. It was like he had found himself at the bottom of the sea, nothing but weightlessness, cold and blackness. Fear gripped his heart preventing him from calling out in nothing more than a shrill windy whine. Holding his breath for fear of drowning only lasted for a few minutes before he gasped accepting the inevitable.

To his surprise his lungs were filled with air and opening his eyes he saw himself standing upon a great lit stained glass window. Looking to the design he saw a young brown haired man with his eyes closed. Kyten's eyes opened wider as he soon realized the clothing on the man matched his own. Running a hand through his long matching brown hair panic began to take him again as he started to remember the moments before the fall.

It was a normal day in his home town of Tanyo. The small town was on the edge of the sea and the weather was always pleasant thanks to its tropical location. In the summer at times the heat could be unbearable but the ocean was always there for that. Kyten sat on the wall bordering the beach smiling broadly out at the sea. He always felt free out there in the waves. Weightless and free he felt like he could fly.

People were enjoying the waves and the rather pleasant breeze coming from the water, it was a perfect day. Kyten had no intention of going into the water today just to watch the people come and go and feel the wind in his hair.

"Hey Ky! What's up man," asked a familiar young man with black hair. He was about the same height of Kyten if not slightly taller. His eyes were a welcoming blue and his smile was infectious. Today he was just in his swimming trunks of black.

"Hey Pierce! I wasn't expecting you around here today. I thought you would be out and about with Andrea," Replied Kyten as he hopped off the wall and reached into his pocket to pull free a candy bar before tossing it to his friend.

Pierce caught the candy and smirked a bit at the reply. He chuckled slightly putting a hand through his hair a bit sheepishly, "Yeah... Well I should be but hey I thought you know... My friend Kyten is all alone today and could probably use a bud."

Kyten laughed slightly and shook his head as he spoke, "You really shouldn't blow your girlfriend off for me like that. She's bound to be angry."

"Oh I'm not that angry. He's a free spirit and I know I can't hold him down. Besides I knew he would come here for you Ky," Replied a voice behind the men making them freeze up.

The woman chuckled and walked around the two before looking up at them with her odd grey eyes. She giggled a little as her red hair waved in the breeze forcing her to wave it out of her face with the back of her hand. She smiled sweetly and gave them both a hug before nodding, "So what's the plan boys?"

Kyten smirked a little a slight glitter in his green eyes before shrugging, "I wasn't planning anything myself. So umm... we could grab a bite to eat I guess."

Pierce nodded and smiled again, "Right! Off to the burger shack!"

"Like it was his plan all along," Replied Andrea with a giggle and a roll of her eyes. She grabbed Pierce's arm as the three headed off onto the cobblestone streets of their home town.

The town itself was very costal in design with its latin influenced architecture making it feel warm and tropical even when the winds from the sea were bitter and cold. The people were happy and smiles weren't hard to find. A friendly face was always a few feet away.

The three friends found their way to the palm frond umbrella covered tables just as a man in a black robe ran out of the establishment followed by the owner yelling after the man, "Stop Thief!"

Kyten looked to Pierce a bit surprised at the idea of the thief in Tanyo. Pierce was all action as usual and didn't miss a beat running after the man in black. Kyten knew he would never hear the end of it if he didn't go to help and so seeing the street his friend and the man in black ran down he ran down a nearby alley hoping he could cut them off.

He was unfortunately right in his assumption. As he turned the corner into the street he saw the man in black running directly at him as the glow of red eyes pierced the darkness of the hood and a smirk was shown in the crimson din. The man rushed forward at impossible speeds grabbing Kyten by the collar and throwing him into a wall.

Kyten tried to call out in pain but his lungs found no air in them. He slumped to the ground clutching his chest as Pierce ran by only to be thrown back next to Kyten. The man in black stopped and turned as he threw his arm out and a strange twirling light appeared in his hand only to form itself into a bizzare weapon. It was covered in sharpened teeth with one long scythe blade. The whole thing looked to be made of bone shaped together into a twisted abomination.

Pointing the thing at the two men he grinned as a ball of light was forming at the tip pointed at Pierce's chest. Kyten didn't think he just leapt as a thin beam of light shot through the air and struck him in the chest.

Kyten looked over the stained glass as a crack formed and then a large part of the platform shattered making him stumble backwards as he clutched his chest in pain. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he screamed for help in the black.

"Troubles will find their way to you, but you must remain strong..."

The words weren't spoken but more thought on their own. Kyten looked about panting as he shouted, "who's there!?"

"Be brave broken heart and you may once again be whole."

Impossible light filled the black around him and Kyten had to shield his eyes to prevent damage. He felt hard stone against his back and opening his eyes he found himself with his back against a statue's base. Looking up he saw a man in a flowing robe and a book in his hand pointing out over the horizon.

Kyten stood up quickly and looked about baffled as to where he was. He ran his hands over himself to make sure everything was right but no matter how much he tried to assure himself that everything was alright he couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. He saw a plate on the statue and read quietly to himself, "Ansem the wise?"

Looking about he saw a busy city square with few people paying him any attention. Confused and disoriented Kyten tried to take a few steps but fell to a knee as he clutched his chest and started to pant again. He felt a hand on his back and a friendly voice spoke, "Something wrong there friend?"

Looking up Kyten was greeted by the face of a blue and white wolf with purple hair. His eyes went wide and he let out a surprised yawlp as he was with his back to the statue again. He put up his hands trying to defend himself as the wolf frowned slightly and spoke, "Well that's not very nice..."

The wolf stood on two legs with a brown leather jacket and white t shirt beneath. A rather unremarkable set of blue jeans covered his legs as he crossed his arms and shook his head.

"Y..Wh... I have to be dreaming," Said Kyten as he held his face in his hands. That was the kindest explanation for all that had happened to him today from the man in black to the darkness and now talking animal people.

The wolf shook his head solemnly as he frowned and offered his hand to help the man up, "It's happening again then. Hey what's your name? I'm Irvine."

Kyten opened his eyes and seeing that everything was the same and now people were staring. He took the hand and let Irvine help him up as he spoke, "I... I'm Kyten. Where am I?"

Irvine nodded slowly looking into the man's green eyes with his own purple ones curiously. The wolf offered a shoulder to help the man walk before speaking, "These are the sorts of things best talked about in quiet places away from prying eyes Kyten. Come along and I'll tell you anything you need to know okay?"

Kyten was suspicious and so didn't take the offered shoulder but agreed to follow the wolf to a nearby building. It appeared to be a tavern where they both sat in a dark corner. Irvine was kind enough to buy them food with a bizarre sort of diamond piece of gold. Little did Kyten know that all his reactions were being registered by the wolf letting him know that this man really had no idea of where he was.

"So Kyten... tell me of your home. Where are you from," Asked Irvine curiously with a quirked brow.

Kyten looked down at the table and frowned as he spoke, "It's called Tanyo... It was a coastal town of only a few thousand people. Tropical and warm all year round even if the wind blows cold. I... There was a man in black. He stole something from the burger shop and Pierce and I ran off after him. He... he had some sort of weapon."

Irvine nodded slowly as he reached into his jacket and pulled out a pad of paper and a pen setting them in front of Kyten, "Can you draw it for me?"

Kyten picked up the pen and slowly began to draw out the weapon as best he remembered it, and as well as his unpracticed hand could. Irvine frowned as he saw the weapon shaking his head slowly, "Keyblade..."

Kyten looked up and shook his head, "I don't know what it is... But he shot me with it."

The lupine looked up quickly at the mention of being shot by a keyblade and his eyes went wide. He shook his head slowly before speaking, "You have to be mistaken Kyten. No one survives a keyblade blast the way you are."

The brown haired man touched his chest and frowned, "I didn't imagine it. He was going to shoot Pierce and I jumped in the way. I felt the beam hit my chest and then I found myself in a black place with a stained glass window. A part of it shattered."

Irvine looked amazed before taking the pad and pen back and sitting back, "That's... That's amazing. You are the only one I know of who has ever survived without becoming a heartless and nobody."

"A what?"

Irvine nodded slowly before sitting forward, "The worlds are besieged by monsters Kyten. I'm afraid you've come too far now to be allowed ignorance. This is Radiant Garden, a world we have recovered from them. These creatures of darkness are men and women who have surrendered their hearts to the darkest of all emotions. Hate, hopelessness, despair... these things brought the darkness out of their hearts and made them into heartless. However the hearts of those who fight them can be stolen and turn them into heartless as well."

Kyten looked down at himself as a tear ran down his cheek. He reached up feeling the salty water between his fingers and looked surprised at the reaction. He didn't feel the need to cry but still the tear fell.

"Are you okay? Well... considering you've been through a lot," Asked the lupine concerned.

"I... I'm fine... I don't know why I did that," Said Kyten a bit worried. He wanted to ignore it for now and so asked, "What about Nobody's?"

"Ahh... that is what is left behind, a more intelligent creature than a heartless that operates off of pure and cold logic. They have no emotion and are by far the more dangerous of the bunch. They kill without emotion and collect hearts perhaps in the belief that with them one day they will have their own back," Replied Irvine with a sigh.

Kyten frowned and shook his head, "Why did I end up here? I don't understand."

"I don't either Kyten. Some say sometimes people are simply chosen to know the truth. Other times it's forced on them. Now I'm not very good with magic but I know someone who is. They might have a better insight as to what is up with you. We should go and meet him as soon as you get some food in you," Replied Irvine.

Their food arrived and Kyten was quite thankful for it as he was hungry. He ate as fast as his body could allow drinking plenty of water when he went a little too fast. Irvine smiled slightly at this and when they were finished he led his new companion out into the streets once more.

"We are headed to the water gardens. Be prepared to see things that in your world would be impossible. Know that there are creatures from many worlds here and things you've probably never seen before. Just stay calm and don't call attention to yourself."

Kyten nodded slowly as they began to make their way through the streets of the town. The man from Tanyo found his agreement harder to honor than he thought it would be. He saw more walking talking animals as well as other bizarre things. Magic was a foreign concept to him and there was plenty of it flowing all over.

When they reached the water gardens he simply had his breath taken away. From the glass floors showing the thousands of fish below to the fountains suspended in the air though the most notable figure was the hybrid floating about in one of the fountains speaking to a group of teenagers. While the white creature had a kind smile he felt a great fear as he approached it.

The creature looked much like Irvine on the top though his ears were much larger than the wolf's with a narrower snout. Irvine stopped and let his friend finish with the teens so turning to Kyten with a nod, "This is Witch. He's sort of a hybrid... Fennec and fish."

"My hearing hasn't weakened with age Irvine. I'm a Siren newcomer... oh how very interesting. Run along children today's lesson is over. I have to research now," Replied the creature in what sounded like at least 5 different voices all of them having a sing song feel to them.

Irvine smirked and nodded to the Siren with a chuckle, "Of course. Witch this is Kyten."

Witch nodded as with a powerful flip of his mermaid like tail he was airborne and floating about them with a light hum. He looked over Kyten curiously before nodding, "Your heart is broken Kyten... how did this come about?"

Kyten was amazed at this fennec merman floating about in the air like it was made of water and shocked beyond words. Irvine was kind enough to fill the silence, "Kyten here took a keyblade blast meant for his friend."

Witch nodded as he sniffed a few times, "I could smell the magic about him but never did I believe it to be true. You are quite unique Kyten. I don't believe we have ever seen someone with a... hmm... broken heart... before. I'm afraid I don't know how to mend one. This is a new problem. I assume you will have some emotional issues."

"That would explain the crying," Said Kyten as he looked down at his hands before frowning a bit more, "I can't live like this..."

Irvine put a hand on the human's shoulder and nodded, "We have to help him Witch. His world... it was him."

Witch quirked a brow and settled down in front of Kyten much like one would expect a naga to sit with its tail trailed out behind them. He rubbed his chin a few times before nodding, "You've been attacked by a creature made of some of the deepest and darkest evil I've ever set eyes upon Kyten dear. A dangerous foe and you stood up to him, you're either very brave or quite foolish. Probably a little of both."

Irvine shook his head, "There was no way for him to know Witch... We have bigger problems now anyway. If he's back then we need to find everyone again to get ready for his assault. He won't be far behind."

Kyten was just letting them talk as he starred at his hands trying to absorb all that has happened in the past few hours. He was quite surprised when he saw a black creature appear in his hands with a strange sharp and jagged symbol on its face where eyes should be. It tilted it's head almost curiously as it looked up at kyten before leaping free and into the water.

Irvine and Witch turned at the sound looking at Kyten curiously. Kyten just stood there not really sure what to say about what he had just witnessed. He thought he was going crazy anyway.

"You okay friend," Asked Irvine before the water behind them erupted into a huge black leviathan serpent. Leaning over them it let out a bellowing roar making Witch and Irvine stumble while Kyten fell right into the water.

His eyes went wide as the serpent dived and swam directly for him. He put up his hands only to feel himself be pushed aside. Opening his eyes he saw Witch in his real element. Agile and free in the water the fluid actually bent to the siren's command as he threw both arms out and Kyten's eyes went wide again as he saw the same swirling light.

The white creature was soon holding a pair of blades. One was white and had almost a harp like look to it while the black one felt wrong and out of place. The human felt his insides squirm powerfully as he looked at the black and red blade and found himself forced to look away as if he might actually throw up.

He felt a hand on his collar pulling him free from the water as Irvine shook his head quickly, "Get out of here Kyten! We'll handle this thing!"

The human got to his feet but the serpent let out another roar as its tail smashed the entrance to the water gardens and they were all trapped inside with it. It appeared to be letting out a black fluid from cuts in its body and growing more and more desperate.

"Irvine the keyblades aren't working! Try your's," Shouted Witch as he floated back in the waters and closed his eyes crossing the blades across his chest. The sound that emanated was the most beautiful thing Kyten had ever heard. He was almost hypnotized by it as he lay on the fragile glass pathway.

The Lupine threw his arm out but the keyblade didn't form as Witch and he look on in amazement as the serpent began to dance like it were charmed. Witch didn't skip a beat as he continued to sing while Irvine went to Kyten.

"Let's get out of here before this stops working. Kyten? Hey... you there," Asked Irvine as he shook Kyten and he came out of his trance. The serpent as well seemed to be shaken from its trance and was angrier than ever. It dove into the glass shattering it and sending Kyten and Irvine into the water.

Irvine was smashed back into Witch with a flick of the serpent's tail which coiled around Kyten pulling him up into its coils. It seemed almost gentle with the human as it held him close and roared at its attackers in the water.

Everyone went still as the serpent coddled Kyten slightly above the surface of the water. Irvine and Witch looked to each other confused before Witch spoke, "How... curious. Kyten are you okay?"

Kyten was panicked as he lay in the beast's coils but as he heard the voice and realized that he wasn't in danger he yelped back, "Y...Yes."

"What the hell is going on here," Shouted Irvine in reply.

Kyten remembered the little black creature and nodded, "I... I think I made this thing..."

"Then unmake it," Shouted Irvine as he was struggling to tread water to a nearby stone where he pulled himself out of the water.

Kyten looked up at the creature and frowned slightly, "I... I don't know how!"

Witch kept his distance as he spoke back, "Think of what you did when you made it. You need to do the opposite."

Kyten looked back up trying to remember as he thought about Pierce being alone with the man that had done this to him. He shook his head thinking about the moments he had with Andrea and Pierce before, when he had been happy.

The serpent began to shrink down until Kyten was floating on his back in the water with the little black thing on his chest. It sunk into it and was gone making Kyten put his hands on his chest fearful as the thing was inside him somewhere.

Witch swam over quickly taking Kyten into his arms and depositing him on the rock next to Irvine as they all remained quiet for some time. None of the three really had anything to say or any idea of what to do in this situation.

The human looked at his hands with fear as the destruction all around them was his fault. He swallowed hard obviously terrified.

Witch put a hand on his leg and shook his head slowly, "None of that. We can't have you accidentally bringing that... thing... out again. If it's negativity that brings it then you need to try your best to not think about things like that."

The three spent some time still catching their breath near the rock. They would be there for some time before they would be saved by the rescue crews removing the stones from the entrance to the water gardens.
