Lone Wolf - Part 2

"What do you mean he left?" Laren questioned Lira. "He just...left. I don't know, he just darted off without a word," she responded hastily. Laren was growing more and more antsy. Felan shouldn't have just left like that; it was against the law of the pack. "He didn't tell you anything?" Laren asked. Lira shook her head no. Laren sighed and sat down on the chair in her hut. What would she need to do? A scout party could look for him, but even if they found him, he probably wouldn't come back easily. She was worried, but something else made her think. Why did the pack need him? Other than having a nice chew toy to relieve stress on, Felan didn't really have a use. But he was part of the pack, and it was Laren's duty to keep the pack together.

"We'll assemble a scouting party to search for him. The day is still young, and he probably hasn't gotten too far," she said. Laren stood up and walked out of her hut, with Lira following close behind. "Go, call the scouts to the fire," she said to Lira, who nodded and ran off. The snow on the ground crunched beneath Laren's feet as she walked over to the fire and looked at the metal plate that was on its edge. Its edges were blackened, but it didn't seem too damaged. In the middle of the plate read 'Shila'. It was the name of Felan's mother. "Oh Felan, what have you done," Laren mumbled.

Elsewhere, Agra, leader of the Cliff-fanged pack, as well as his scouts, was out doing some hunting in the snowy forest. Hunting was a favored sport of Agra, as it gave him something more to do than sit around and give orders like that lazy Alpha Laren. Agra and his scouts jumped from tree to tree, the icy wind on their backs as they stalked a nice sized doe they had spotted. Agra tightened his grip on his oak bow, and pulled an arrow out of his satchel. He got a good sight of his prey, and prepared to fire. He pulled the string back, and took a good, deep breath to steady the shot. Right when he was about to fire, however, the doe darted off and a silver wolf ran by. Agra muttered a swear and watched the wolf as he stopped for a break. At first glance, Agra thought it was one of his scouts. However, when he took a closer look, he noticed that it looked like the omega of the other pack. What was this little wolf doing this far out and alone? Agra's curiosity was beginning to show. He turned to his scouts and whispered, "Follow him, find out what he's doing." The scouts nodded, and turned their attention to the resting wolf. He was sitting underneath a frozen tree, panting. He must have been running for a while.

He didn't stay for long though; he was soon up and running. Agra motioned his scouts to follow the silver wolf, and they did with the utmost haste. They followed silently, and watched as the wolf seemed to have a sense of freedom. He seemed happy, which also confused Agra. This wolf must have had something good happen recently. Agra was continuously intrigued by the situation. Since when was their omega happy? The few times Agra had seen him, the wolf seemed depressed. Of course, as Agra watched, new ideas came to mind. What if the omega was alone now? It would make sense, seeing as he was suddenly happy. If he was, then he would make easy prey. If he was captured, then the information about the other pack would be his. Then, once he outlived his usefulness, he could be used as leverage against his pack for land or hunting rights. Agra grinned, and followed the omega throughout the day.

Twilight soon fell, and the omega began slowing down. He had run all he could run for the day. This was the perfect opportunity for Agra. He waited, watching from the trees, silently. The omega was showing fear on his face now as the dim light hit him. Even more ideas came to Agra. The omega soon curled into a ball and went into an obviously hard sleep. Agra turned to his scout and whispered an order, and with a nod, the scout pulled up a blowgun to his muzzle and fired, hitting the sleeping omega right on the butt.

Agra turned and said, "Good shot. Okay, I want two to carry him. Let's all head back to the village, and when we arrive, give him to me." The scouts nodded again, and leapt down from the snowy trees. Agra followed, and walked over the the omega. His tongue drooped out of his open muzzle as he was picked up by two scouts and carried off. Agra and his scouting party began the trek to their pack's village. With the approach of night, the winds worsened. An oncoming storm was made obvious by the dark clouds that were approaching from the cliffs. Agra hastened his pace as to reach his village before the blizzard hit. He and his scout team ran up the small trail that led up the cliffs and into their part of the woods.

After a small while of running, they finally made it to the village. There was a fire going on in the middle, where the whole pack had gathered around and had begun feasting. Huts were centralized around the fire, though Agra's hut, as well as the priestess's, was noticeably larger. The whole pack had shifted their attention from food to the new silver wolf that was being carried in by the scouting party. They watched as Agra took him from the scouts and walked into his hut without grabbing any food. Curiosity was shared by all of them now.

Agra soon came out of his hut and walked over to the fire. He sat on a chair that was made especially for him, and grabbed a piece of meat from the selection. He took a bite of it and said, "The wolf you all saw, that was the Red pack's omega. I know it is odd..." He paused to take another bite of his meat, "...but I want him to be treated with respect. He will be staying with us for some time, so get used to his presence. If he misbehaves, I will be the one to punish him, understood?" He received a 'yes sir' from the pack. "Good," he finished. He wanted the omega to be treated with respect so that he would be more helpful. The omega was free now, and if Agra continued to give him that freedom, maybe he could get the wolf to change his allegiances. He shrugged, and continued feasting on his slab of meat.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry. We just didn't find him," the lead scout told Laren. She sighed, and said, "At least you tried. Tomorrow, try again. For now, go, rest. We have run out of daylight." She looked up at the dark sky and saw the black clouds rolling in. A storm was coming; Felan would defiantly have trouble if he didn't build shelter soon. Laren began to feel guilt weighing down on her as she realized that the poor wolf probably didn't stand a chance on his own. She looked down at the meat she had in front of her, and then at the pack, as they ate around the fire, all talking of Felan. Snow had stopped falling, but winds were picking up as the pack ate. Laren found that her appetite was gone now. She set down her food and walked away from the circle. She went to her hut, and was greeted by warm air as she opened the door. Closing it behind her, she walked over to her mattress and laid down. She was worried about Felan. She needed to get him back to the pack soon; his life may depend on it. She rolled on her side as confusion and worry continued to weigh her down. She sighed, and tried to get some sleep. She would resume finding a solution in the morning. She was just too tired now.

Felan woke in a daze. He felt like he had been hit with a rock, or stomped on by an ogre. He couldn't even tell where he was. The last thing he remembered was falling asleep underneath a dead tree in the icy forest. He sat up, and looked at what he was laying on. It was a mattress, and he seemed to be inside of a large hut. He shook his head and stood up. Surveying his surroundings, he found that he had never seen this place before. He did however find another wolf that was sleeping on a separate mattress. Felan walked over to him, and was shocked when he found out who it was. It was Agra, from the Cliff-fanged pack! Felan turned and ran to the door of the hut. He pulled it open and was hit in the face by a blizzard. He slammed the door shut, and turned around to find another way out. In doing so, he woke up Agra.

"What are you doing?" Agra asked, "There's a blizzard going on outside stupid!"Felan's heart skipped a beat as fear took hold of his body. He froze up, unable to move due to pure fear. Agra didn't attack him, though. Instead, he sat up and patted a spot next to him, motioning for Felan to come sit down. He did, afraid of the consequences that would occur if he did not. He sat down, shaking, as Agra stretched and yawned. "So, what's your name," Agra asked.

"It's Felan," he replied nervously. He cautiously sat down next to Agra. "Good name," Agra said, yawning again. "So, what brought you to my part of the woods?" he asked. Felan didn't respond immediately; he was still too scared. Agra was fierce, and to lose his life just after gaining his freedom... "Hello?" Agra waved his hand in front of Felan's blank stare.

"Huh, oh, I, uh, left. They were being...mean," he cautiously replied. Agra nodded slowly, and scooted over towards Felan. "So, you're a lone wolf then," he asked. Felan nodded, and scooted away from Agra. There was a sleepy silence that hung over the place, and the only noise came from the blizzard that was attacking the village. Agra looked at Felan, and smiled a kind smile. "Well, you are more than welcome to stay with us. You will find that respect is a right here," he said. Felan was quiet, but shocked. Instead of taking him prisoner, Agra was offering a home and respect. It was just too weird.

Felan had to think about this. Agra was being oddly nice, which meant he wanted something. But there was food and shelter here, as well as protection. "I'll give it a shot," Felan eventually said. Agra's face lit up as he said, "Great! You will have food and shelter, as well as being treated as one of the pack. Nilu, our omega, will house you. Her hut is just as big as the others, though it is the last one to the right. She's excited to have company, so I think you two will get along great." Agra smirked and made a humping motion. "So, when will I move in?" Felan asked, trying to stray from the upcoming topic. "Just as soon as the blizzard clears, which shouldn't be too much longer," Agra replied.

Felan nodded and looked around Agra's hut. He couldn't see much, as Agra hadn't lit his candles yet. But as soon as he did, the hut lit up. It was a large hut, with some tables and chairs. It was only one room, but it was well decorated with ornaments. In the corner, there was a statue of a she-wolf in what appeared to be robes of some sort. She was probably the idol of the pack. There were two beds, and each had wooden backing to them. They were against opposite corners, with a table by each. The door was where it would be expected; on a wall. The hut was certainly extravagant; Felan wondered if Laren's hut was like this too.

Felan shrugged and turned his attention to Agra. "I'm going to lie down and sleep through the storm. You should do the same," Agra said. Felan just nodded again, and walked over to his bed. Lying down, he wondered how everyone back at his pack was doing. Did they miss him? Did they try to find him? What if they DID find him? He sighed, and rolled on his side, falling asleep easily.

"I don't know, it just doesn't feel right without the whole pack," Laren said. The blizzard outside was picking up, and was easily heard. It didn't, however, drown Accalia's voice as she said, "That's because the pack is a family. When one dies or leaves, one of the family is gone. This is, of course, his fault." She pointed at Zen. The white wolf immediately objected. "How is it my fault? It's his fault. He's the one that left," he said. Laren walked up to Zen and gave him a good slap. "You destroyed something with great sentimental value. That can be quite soul crushing," Accalia said, her black fur remaining smooth as she spoke. "It is actually your fault."

"Well I'm sorry, okay," Zen said with no sincerity. "You can tell that to Felan's corpse when we pull it out of six feet of snow tomorrow!" Laren snapped. Zen opened his mouth to speak, but shut it before a sound could escape. He knew Laren was right. He sunk down and remained quiet. The candles flickered as Laren turned from the subservient beta to the priestess. "Well, what should we do?" she asked. Accalia looked at Laren straight in her blue eyes and said, "Find him."

Agra was ecstatic. His plans were unfolding perfectly. He tossed and turned in his bed, trying not to wake the now sleeping Felan. If things kept going the way he wanted, then many possibilities would open. He smiled to himself as he turned again. The blizzard was cooling down, and the sun would rise soon. Still, Agra could not sleep. He was looking forward to see how the day would unfold. His smile grew as he went over his plan once again in his head.

Felan sat up groggily. He yawned, still a bit tired. His heart skipped a beat as he saw his surroundings. But his mind eventually caught up with his body, and he calmed down. He stood up and noticed that Agra was not in his bed. Felan shrugged and walked over to the door of the hut, pausing when he got there. It could be a trap; half of the pack's hunters could be waiting outside, ready to sack Felan right as he left. He slowly pushed on the door, and peered out the small crack he made. He was greeted with cold air that hit him right in the eye. He slammed the door shut and put his paw over his eye. That really stung. He stood where he was for a few seconds, waiting for the stinging to wear off. It did after a while, and he opened the door again, this time all the way, ready to dash off if it was necessary. It wasn't, as he soon found out. The pack was awake, but no one tried to attack him, which was surprising, considering he made an easy target.

Felan walked out of the hut and looked around. He was surprised to see that the decorations for the solstice festival were still up after the blizzard. The Cliff-fanged pack must be very good at what they do. He walked to the central fire, where he was given a nice slab of meat that looked cooked and well seasoned. His mouth became an ocean as he looked at the steak that was given to him. "Felan!" he heard, snapping him out of his food-induced trance. He looked around, and found that is was Agra that was calling his name. He was seated on a chair, as well as a grey wolf to the left of him, and a black wolf to his right. He walked over to them, and kneeled on the snowy ground when he approached.

The black wolf giggled when she saw Felan kneel. "You don't have to kneel. Here you are not an omega, but a guest, and you will be treated as such," Agra said. Felan blushed as he stood up. "Aw, don't laugh at the poor guy," the grey wolf said. "Hi, I'm Galin, the beta," he said, extending his paw. Felan shook it, and turned to the black wolf when she said, "And I'm Alni, the priestess." He shook her paw before he looked at Agra. "See her?" Agra asked, pointing at a silver wolf who was eating across from the fire. "She is Nilu. I figured that since you were an omega, you and she could relate. She's who you're staying with, and she'll be showing you around. Why don't you go eat with her, she seems lonely." Felan nodded and turned to Nilu. He walked over to her, leaving footprints in the snow behind him.

"Hi," he said. "I'm Felan." Nilu jumped and dropped her meat, and started choking on a large part that she was chewing on. "Oh my god!" Felan exclaimed as Nilu hacked. He dropped his meat and got behind Nilu. He put his fists on her stomach and started performing the heimlich maneuver on her, which was the old wolven word for 'saving one from death from disembowelment'. It was odd, but it was the accepted word for saving someone from choking. Nilu spat out the piece of meat onto the ground, and became limp for a second. Felan caught her, and helped her sit down. While she was catching her breath, Felan noticed that Agra was giving him a thumbs up.

"I am so sorry," Felan said. "It's alright. I was lost in my own thought, so much so that you scared me," Nilu said. She bent down and picked up her meat, and began eating again. Felan did the same. "So, you're Felan," Nilu said, her mouth full of food. Felan replied, "Yep. And you're Nilu, right?" She nodded and swallowed her food. She didn't take another bite though; instead, she started laughing. Felan was confused. Normally wolves didn't laugh after choking. "That was fun. Thanks for saving me," she said. "Oh, uh, no problem," Felan said, still slightly thrown off. "So, tell me about you. Like, how did you end up here?" Nilu inquired.

Felan told her about the pack, his harmonica, and the rest as they ate. Things were going good for Felan. He was eating at the same time as others, Nilu was pretty cool and they got to spend time together, and he had a place to call home temporarily. Yes, Felan was content.

"Laren's sending us far," one of the scouts said. "Yeah, why would we even need to go into enemy territory anyways?" another asked. "Quiet," whispered the leader. He needed them to shush because they were approaching the village of the Cliff-fanged pack. "This way," he whispered, giving a hand signal for his party to follow him. The shuffled from bush to bush until they got a good scene of the village. They were shocked at what they saw. Felan was sitting down around the fire, talking to another wolf, eating some meat. "Traitor," he whispered. "Damn, we need to report this to Laren right away. That traitor must get what he deserves."
