#5 of Great Tales of Antaris: The Lady of Luck

Lady of Luck 5

Thunk, the blade sliced into the ground next to Peter's head a scant centimetre from his skull. The blade was ornamental and greatly jewelled but no assassins' weapon then the assassin spoke "You have killed three of the Lord's sons; he bids you good health and prays you keep this blade as a token of his honour" then the assassin stepped out of the tent and melted into the night.

"Damn it all to hell" Peter breathed as he saw the blade sparkling next to his head

"Count yourself lucky he didn't just kill you for the honour" Dawn said

"Well you control my luck don't you so I won't have bad luck anymore right? So he wouldn't have killed me" Peter asked

"Yes I am your luck and as long as you do exactly as I say your luck will love you" Dawn said testily

"So what the hell was that just about?" Peter asked still freaked out

"Were you not listening or are you just dumb?" Dawn said

"I had just about enough of that" Peter said coolly

"Sorry dear that was a bit mean wasn't it?" Dawn apologised "Basically you killed three of their ruler's sons, now in most cultures you would have been killed on sight but in the Genthre culture you are considered a great warrior to do so and they generally are the best assassins so it doesn't happen very often. So now none will try to kill you because they think you will kill them easily and so their Lord has no choice but to honour you, though if he sees you he probably will kill you"

"Right" Peter said "So the assassins won't bother us again?" he asked hopefully

"Fairly unlikely unless they have an older brother but its more likely the Genthre have left Shadow so he will probably send his men after us now" Dawn said

"What are his men?" Peter asked apprehensively

"Oh you know things like gryphons, Minotaurs, centaurs and other things like that" Dawn said offhandedly

Peter ran his hands through his hair which had grown filthy during his time in Antaris "So how far is it to where ever you want us to go and how long will it take?"

"Not more than about two months" Dawn replied

"How long do you think it will be before your brother's servants find us?" Peter asked

"They won't try to find us they will just watch the towns they're fairly stupid except for the centaurs so if we avoid the towns we should have an easy time until we hit the mountains." Dawn said moving to pack up the camp

Dawn was right, neither Peter nor she ever sighted any of her brother's servants on their way to the mountains now as they approached her brother Sokl's temple town she warned Peter of what to expect

"The people in Sokl's temple town are strange" Dawn said slowly

"What do mean?" Peter asked

"Well to put it this way they believe his the absolute, the only God even though he openly tells them of Shadow and me, so they are rather strange and absolutely devout so no matter what any one says or does DON'T react or things might get violent" Dawn warned

"So keep away from the fanatics" Peter said simply

"Yes that might be the best way to put it, oh and what ever you do don't offend my brother's high priest. He is one hell of a warrior and has numerous enchanted weapons so we want to go a long way to keep from offending him but if you get on his good side he might teach you a thing or two about swordplay and magic in combat" Dawn said

"Now there is a chance that we will meet Sokl again if you do ignore what ever they tell you to do and say that you only obey me" Dawn said firmly

"Won't that start a lot of fights?" Peter asked

"Quite probably but Sokl isn't going to steal you away from me" Dawn said

The someone walked out of the shadows "Oh how touching your already up"

Peter spun and grabbed his sword ready to fight

"Oh don't worry I am not here to kill you" the voice said "I am here to invite you to the Lord Sokl's ceremony"

Dawn's eyes widened as she saw the speaker "This is the High Priest I was telling you about Peter put the sword away" she said "I wouldn't have expected a visit from you this far from my brother's temple"

"The Lord informed me you were coming with company" the High Priest said looking at Peter with distaste

"I hope your friend recognises who the one true God is" the High Priest continued

"Of course" Peter said smirking "She stands about two meters from you right now"

The High Priest turned and walked of in a huff, Dawn tried without much success to conceal her laughter. Dawn couldn't contain it any more when the Priest was about meters away from the camp she burst out laughing, her laughter like silver bells, ringing across the forest.

Dawn finally got her laughter under control about five minutes later then her face turned serious "You do realise that you just made a fairly powerful enemy, don't you"

"It was worth it" Peter said "His Priestliness was just a little to impressed with his own holiness"

Dawn and Peter finished packing up the camp and moved off towards the temple town of Sokl which was rumoured to be the largest in land if not the safest in terms of lack of crime. The temple town had a particularly unpleasant way of executing law breakers, it was to throw them into fighting pits with horrific monsters until they eventually were killed which might take months if they were unlucky.

The term magnificent held little power in the Temple Town, the town soared into the air with buildings ornate and powerful reaching upwards towards the sky but one building towered above them all. A veritable floating fortress, the temple was huge and it didn't touch the ground, it literally hovered above the ground connected to the earth only by the stairways that led the huge doors of the temple.

"My brother was always making a show" Dawn said indifferently as she gazed upon the temple town

"Well he certainly knows what he is doing with his town. How does the temple float?" Peter asked curiously

"Simple answer, he bends the rules of gravity, if the stairs broke the temple would float away into the air and it would be mighty hard to get down again" Dawn explained

"Well he got my attention, for the moment" Peter said surveying the town beneath them which was far more akin to a city than town. It reached across the land for miles and must have been the largest town/city of its time even in the human side of the world.

"Well let's cause some major religious rethinking" Dawn said gaily as she began to walk down the hill towards the Temple Town

"Your brother wont appreciate that" Peter laughed smiling as he walked beside her

As they walked into the temple town Peter noticed that something was wrong "Dawn where are the people?" Peter asked

"You're right something's wrong even if it was a festival there would be someone doing business" Dawn said as they walked through the empty streets, searching for some sign of life

"How can the people of an entire town this size vanish so completely without leaving any sign of their going" Peter asked

Peter got sick of walking through the streets and went to a door and kicked it in, the sight that greeted him could be best described as grisly. "Well I guess we know what happened here" Dawn said silently as she saw the bodies

"Let's get to your brother's temple and get the fuck out of here...." Peter said voice trailing of as he remembered something. Peter swore as he remember that carrion birds will never take to the dead of the battlefield if the army still holds the field, basically put the enemy was still here.

"Dawn" Peter said tersely "The enemy is still in the town, we need a way out of here fast"

"Shit" Dawn breathed "The closest way out is back the way we came"

"Well we have to take it" Peter said "The longer we are here the more likely the enemy we will find us"

"Oh we have already found you" the High Priest said emerging from the shadows

"How....? " Dawn started

"Simple really, just an illusion" the High Priest said, then he appeared to melt skin rolling across his bones as they shifted forming a gryphon

"Didn't expect that did you?" the gryphon asked "Your brother was so intent watching for a frontal attack he never noticed the change in his High Priest and now it's to late. Soon our Lord shall kill the deceiver Sokl and end his power once and for all"

Dawn's eyes widened "That's insane if Shadow kills Sokl then the illusion that hides us from the humans will fail they'll know we exist"

"Wait I thought Gods couldn't kill each other" Peter said

"Normally they can't but Sokl will be incredibly weak from the death of his High Priest and followers it is entirely possible that Shadow could kill Sokl" Dawn said

"But if the illusion fails then the Antaris wars will start" Peter said

"Exactly it will be the beginning of the end" Dawn whispered

"We have to stop it" Peter shouted drawing his sword and slamming it between the armour plates of the gryphon, the sword cleaving straight to its heart dropping the creature instantly.

"Let's go" Dawn said quickly as Peter searched the gryphon's body and found an enchanted blade, "Nice" Dawn said "now lets go before more come"

Peter and Dawn raced through the city, blades drawn ready to face an enemy but not crossbows. The windows on the sides of the street kicked open to reveal gryphon's holding massive crossbows ready to fire, "Oh fuck" Peter swore as he darted behind as pillar as the bolts rained down around him and Dawn.

Dawn leant out to send a spell at the archers and as she did a bolt slammed into her shoulder sending spinning to impact the ground hard. Peter let out a roar as he saw Dawn fall dragging her to safety he walked out and cast the only destructive spell he knew with all his hate behind it.

Flame roared out from Peter engulfing the buildings in a halo of flame cooking the gryphons alive as they desperately tried to escape the burning buildings, one burst free soaring into the air one wing on fire only to have the wing crumple to send it tumbling back into the inferno.

Peter slumped in the street drained from the spell of fire but remembered Dawn's injuries and dragged himself over to her lifted her over his shoulder grunted as he took her weight and then set off trying to escape the burning town.

Peter approached the site of their previous camp with a great deal of caution but was to drained and worried to care about attackers, he quickly set up a fire and put on of his daggers into the fire to heat it. He looked at the bolt in Dawn's shoulder, he swore as he saw the assassin's grove in the bolts (a small grove in dagger and arrows filled with lethal poison) as well as the reverse barbs in the bolt trapping the bolt in her.

Peter pulled his blade from the fire and snapped the bolt leaving only a small length protruding from her, Peter saw where the barbs where and used the red-hot dagger to cut the barbs out at the same time sterilizing the wound of poison hopefully preventing a worse poisoning.

It took two days for Dawn to regain consciousness and it was approaching night when you could see the flames from the fire spell still burning in the temple town, as Peter got up to check Dawn's wound she asked him "What is that glow over the hill?"

"Well when you got hit I dragged you into safety then walked out into the street and used a massive fire spell, the enemy haven't managed to quell the blaze or aren't trying so the town is still burning" he said

A sad look came over Dawn's eyes and Peter hugged her till it left "It was truly a great city" she said in a melancholy tone, "How long have I been out?" Dawn asked

"Two days" Peter said and braced himself for the response

Dawn didn't explode as he expected her to at the delay to their race to save Sokl but instead all she said was "Thank you for saving me"

"Any time" Peter said happily

"Oh shut up" Dawn said laughter coming to her eyes

Peter rolled over to her and kissed her on the lips, Dawn felt herself get hot as she returned the kiss with passion but groaned as pained lanced through her shoulder.

"Damn it" Dawn groaned as her shoulder burned with pain

"Oh well I guess I'll just have to wait till your better" Peter said containing her desire

Dawn moaned "Well you just got me all horny for nothing then"

"No I didn't say that" Peter said slyly as he sild down her body and gave her slit and wide lick making Dawn moan with pleasure as Peter continued to torture her with long slow licks across her slit.

"Feeling better?" Peter asked as Dawn gave a particularly loud moan and clutched at his head pushing his face towards her pussy, Peter encouraged by her responses began to lick furiously at her lips pushing Dawn closer to the edge as his tongue penetrated her cunt making her pant harder as she approached pleasure.

Peter placed his lips on Dawn's clit and lightly nipped it sending Dawn over the edge, howling as she came, cumming on Peter's muzzle drenching his face with her cum, Peter lapped the juices off Dawn's thighs and his face and then kissed Dawn again his tongue twisting around hers, Dawn realized she could taste herself on Peter's tongue and it wasn't unpleasant as Peter continued to caress her body. Suddenly Dawn felt very tired and gave a massive yawn; Peter admitted that he felt tired to and that cuddled together with the tent open staring out into the glorious sunset.
