Respecting The Alpha
A short story for all the wolves out there.
I quietly rested under my favourite tree, keeping to myself after the unsuccessful hunt. My pack and I spent most of the night on the trail of a herd of deer, but alas, it was not meant to be. It was the third unsuccessful hunt, and it was starting to affect the morale of the pack.
I closed my eyes and lay back, resting to conserve my energy for the next hunt. A soft sound caught my attention. I perked my ears and swiveled them forward. I let out a low rumble of warning; my pack knew better than to disturb me when I wanted to be alone.
The replying yip caught my ears, followed by a soft voice. "I.. I'm sorry, Alpha. I know you don't want to be bothered, but.." I opened my eyes and looked upon my pack mate. I had to hold back a smile. Although I wanted to be alone, I was quite fond of this pup. Well, not so much a pup anymore, but he'd always be a pup to me. He looked at me with a shy expression, his posture slouched over and his tail tucked between his legs. "I brought.. I brought something for you."
That caught my attention. I sat up with my back against the tree trunk. "Come closer, pup. Show me what you've got there." I spoke in a gentle tone to him. Sometimes he could be a little skittish, but I wanted him to know that I wanted his company. The smaller wolf came forward with his paws hidden behind his back. I sniffed the air a little, and caught the scent of meat.
Timidly, the pup presented me with his gift. It was indeed meat, and a rather good chunk too, still on a sturdy bone. I couldn't help but lick my lips. After three failed hunts and a week since the last real meal, I was hungry. "I was saving this, Alpha." the smaller wolf said. "You should have it.. Because you're the alpha.." He gave me a shaky smile as he said that.
I could help but smile at him. I reached out and took the offered meat. Giving it a once over and a sniff, I could see it was from the last kill. The pup watched me with bright eyes, searching for my approval of the gift. I nodded to him, and began eating. Not only had he managed to grab a choice piece of the kill, but he then managed to keep it away from the rest of the pack, and now he was giving it to me. True, it was my right to pick and choose at the kill first, and anything cached for later. Instead, the pup had presented it to me rather than keeping it horded for himself.
I patted the ground next to me, then resumed eating. My pack mate slowly came closer and sat down next to me. I ate rather messily, and quickly polished off the meat on the bone. I began to gnaw at it, to get at the marrow inside, when I had a thought. I stopped, and handed the bone to the pup. "Here. You should have the rest, pup."
His ears perked up in surprised, and he looked at me with a bit of disbelief. He said nothing, just looked at me, then the bone. He seemed almost afraid to take it, so I put it into his paws. "Go on, take it. It was yours to begin with." He nodded quietly, and then began to gnaw hungrily.
As I watched him crush the bone in his jaws, I couldn't help but smile. He wasn't the biggest member of my pack. In truth, he was a rather low ranking member, but I noticed things in him that the rest of the pack didn't see. He was cunning. He was an excellent tracker. He was also adept at keeping hidden. If he could keep his wits about him, he'd become a higher ranking pack member in no time.
He finished with the bone and cast the remnants aside. His tail wagged happily, and he leaned over and pressed his nose to my neck. He sniffed around for a bit, and then licked at my chin in a respectful manner. I smiled and gave him a content rumble as I gave him an approving lick back. He then rested his head on my shoulder and sighed.
"Th.. Thank you Alpha."
I reached over and gave him a hug and a friendly nuzzle. "Thank you for sharing your cache, pup." I replied.
He smiled brightly and then licked at my cheek again. I would be lying if I said I wasn't fond of this wolf. I wrapped my arm around him and slid down against the tree trunk and resumed my previous lounging. The pup let out a soft happy bark, and curled up next to me with his head on my chest.
With my hunger sated for the time being, I closed my eyes and began to nap. I don't know how long I was out for, but I awoke to a warm sensation on my sheath. With my two hungers sated for now, a quick nap would help me feel refreshed and ready for the evening's hunt.
