Artem the feral wolf

Chapter one- Life on an ever changing path

"Well, here goes nothing," a young feral wolf named Artem said to himself. The young wolf's father was a dire wolf and Artem and his siblings was larger than other wolf cubs. Being only five weeks old Artem stood 18 inches at the shoulders and wieghed nearly 50 pounds. The last few weeks had caused him to burn off all of his baby fat and it was being replaced with lean muscle. Artem's dark black fur that covered his entire was striped with dark shades of gray, and was a great camouflage for the wolfpup. Enabling him to hide himself easily. His dark green eyes only hinted at the intelligence that few others would ever know that he had. From his hiding spot on a ridge just above a clearing Artem could see his target clearly. An adolscent shewolf sitting by a tree drawing marks on a notepad. But, she wasn't a feral like him. She walked upright, had clothes on that covered most of her fur, and did a million other things that confused him to no end. His mother, Dina, was very clear to him and his five littermates to stay far from the tamed furs. "They're lost from nature, to much like the humans that nearly destroyed our world",he could hear her soft words echo inside his head. Dina was an average sized gray wolf with soft gray fur and pure amber eyes. She spent nearly all of her time with the pups. Nursing them was a chore that Dina loved, until the pups sharp canine teeth started to grow in. Although she missed the intimacy of nursing her pups she was glad that they quickly took to the red meat that there father brought to them. The father Sergey, a pure black dire wolf, was more than twice the size of his mate. Sergey spent much of his time out hunting for the six growing pups and his mate. Dina beamed with pride having such a successful hunter as a mate. Sergey was a skilled tracker and was strong enough to bring down large prey like moose on his own. The massive dire wolf's over all success rate was high enough to have fresh meat for his family almost on a daily basis. This was great because his pups where larger than typical wolf pups and was growing in size by nearly a pound every day. Dina would watch over them carefully while they wrestled and played the games she had taught them. Dina knew that while games like hide and seek, tug of war, and mousehunter were fun, they taught them the very basics of survival. She would also teach her pups the wisdom that her mother had taught her. And Artem loved it when his father had time to tell the stories of the great pack. A time before the humans brought there weapons and poison and had nearly wiped out the feral wolves. Artem quickly shut his eyes to try to stop his mind from bringing back the most painful memory in his short life.

Two weeks ago he had wandered from the den to find his favorite stick, that his brother Lev had hid the night before. Lev had silver fur with black points and was the same size as Artem, being the two largest pups of the litter. And the two wrestled each other constantly. This time it was for a large branch that Artem had found the first time they left the den to play. At the time of the branches discovery only Artems maw was big enough to carry the branch that was twice as long as the pup. And he loved teasing his siblings with it by offering to play tug a war with it. But that evening, just before their father would normaly arrive with a fresh kill, Lev grabbed onto the stick and ripped it free from Atrem and ran into the darkness. "Artem!" Dinas voice stopped Artem in midstride. "Where is your brother Lev?" she enquired of her son walking over to stand above her pup. "He took my stick and ran into the forest", the excited pup responded. "Lev come back to the den", the shewolf called after her pup. "And bring my stick back!", Artem added hastily. Lev came into sight just when Dina was about to send Artem to the den and track the pup down herself. Lev returned with his nose held high and tail waging."Where's my stick", Artem shouted as he moved to tackle his brother. Dina nipped at the two to show that she had quite enough, and chased them back up to the den with their tails tucked. Dina paused at the entrance looking into the darkness. Being a wolf Dina's nightvision and hearing was excellent, but she could not see or hear any sign of her mate Sergey. "Three days",she thought to herself as she turned to go into the den. Glancing back up at the moon Dina prayed aloud,"Moon mother light my Sergeys path home." Inside the den chaos ruled as four of the wolfpups cheered on while Artem and Lev wrestled. Dina stopped to look at her family. Six pups in all, three sons three daughters. And a complete pawfull to handle. She just knew that all of them would grow big and strong like their father was. And would help bring strength back to their kind and restore the feral wolfs dwindling numbers. She stood over her pups and they quickly stopped playing to nurse. Dina felt a familiar sharp pain as one overeager pup bit down to hard. "Vadik! No biting" The silver backed pup eased up on his grip. "Sorry mom" Vadik barely let go to apologize and continued to suckle. She only guessed that it was Vadik who had nipped her, he was always the most hungry of her pups. Dina had very little milk to give them since she was weaning them, and the only meat that was left in the den was to dried for the pups to eat. So Dina ate the meat and than regurgitated for them. After they had filled tummys the pups layed down together to sleep. Artem could hear the smallest of his siblings,a shewolf named Miko ask their mother,"When will dad come back?" "Oh young one he'll be back before you grow another inch",Dina's replay was soft and very calming for her pups. Dina looked down at her little Miko. She looked just like her father but had a white star on her chest. And was the most thoughtful of her pups. Always at her siblings side to cheer them up if they just lost a game. Dina than began to sing her favorite lullaby, one that her mother had taught her, until all of them slept.

Thinking about what his mother had said last night Artem had finally found the stick his brother hid, some 200 yards from the small cave he was raised in. Being only 3 weeks old at the time this was the furthest he had ever been from the den. And desided to head back before his mother caught him so far away. But, loud shots range out and the feral wolf pup froze, and quicky dropped to the ground. Frozen in fear, Artem strained his small ears trying to hear his mothers voice. He waited until the sun had moved to the far side of the sky. When he could bring himself to crawl back to the cave, the most terrible sight meet his eyes. Several skinned corpes the size of his brothers and sisters, and one the size of his mother, was littered on the earthen floor. Their faces were twisted in now silent screams of agony. The poacher had not wasted any time on the family and took the prized pelts and had fled hours ago. Then, like a rock falling from the sky, the smell of the gore hit him. Breaking Artem free of the shock and allowing him to run as far and fast as he could.

A sharp hungar pain in his stomach broke him free from the the terrible images. A loud growl that seemed to shake his body soon followed. He had been only able to catch mice while on his own. What was once a fun game to play was his only means of survival for the past two weeks. Artem looked down at his prey to make sure that she didn't leave while his mind wandered. He had spotted the tame shewolf earlier that day, and was hiding a few feet from her walking path when he noticed the scent of meat coming from her backpack. Artem than stalked her for the rest of the morning, until she finally stopped to rest next to a large tree. As she sat the wolfess removed the backpack that held the wonderful smell and placed it on the ground. She sighed softly, removing a notebook and pencil from the bag and began to draw a delicate fern growing near her feet. After about ten minutes of waiting for a chance at the backpack luck finally smiled on Artem. Her pencil dropped from her hand and a short snore followed. "Shes taking a nap!" Wasting no time Artem slid down the ridge into the clearing. He slowly approached the napping figure, watching her closely. "Its just like hide and seek," Artem thought to himself as he approached her. The smell from the bag made him drool a little as he inched ever closer. The tame shewolf looked very much like his sister Zoya. A delicate white fur dominated her body with markings that looked like a playful imp had rubbed charcoal on her face and marked few random spots before flying away. The tame shewolf's body shape was different though. Her hind legs are longer than her front legs allowing her to walk upright. And her paws had thumbs, which allowed the shewolf to easily hold things. Being a feral wolf Artem walked on all four paws, and had no thumbs at all like his ancestors. But Artem quickly banished the thoughts from his head, not wanting to reconjure the images of his siblings in their last moments. "Besides, shes been tamed I can smell 'human' on her." Artem reached out and grabbed the bag with his fangs slowly tugging it away from its sleeping owner.

Lisa napped gently leaning up against a large tree in a clearing. She was short for her kind and very petite, only standing 5' 6" and weighing 115 pounds. Her small breasts came in later than her friends had. Lisa really didn't mind though, her best friend Amy a slightly taller red fox, had managed to grow a pair of double D's and had to fight off the leering gazes of the boys at the school. And her boyfriend Ryan would always let her know that she just perfect, no matter what she looked like. Lisa was certain that this was the spot Ryan had sent to her. They had arranged to meet for a picnic in the forest last night over the phone. Ryan spent a great deal of time in the forest, mostly because his father is the forest ranger and game warden. And he knew alot of really cool places off of the approved trails. The map that Ryan texted her that morning had lead her to this clearing, but she expected her boyfriend to have been there already.

While Lisa rested she thought about the pictures she had sketched of him during school and how mad her dad was when he found them. "He doesn't have a pedigree," he shouted at her."No half shepherd, half rottweiler, half doberman, half ," her father paused only slighty to breathe,"half... whatever else his whore mother found. Is going to get within 100 foot my daughter!" She could only run to her room shouting, "You don't even know him!" Before slamming the door so hard it shook the house. After sobbing into her pillow for a short while she opened the sketch book, turning to the page that caused the argument."He is a german shepherd/akita mix", Lisa said to herself. "And 100 percent perfect." She traced the muscles on the picture imagining that her boy was right in front of her. Ryan was 18, only a single year older than the shewolf. His face, inner ears and a small diamond on the base of his tail was black, but the softest light brown fur covered the rest of his body. Ryan was the best linebacker in the history of the school and worked constantly to keep himself at top physical condition. And being 6' 2" and 250 pounds he had a lot to work with. Where Ryan excelled on the field he struggled in the classroom, but that's how she got to meet him. 4 weeks ago, while standing in front of her locker, her best friend Amy spotted him walking towards them. "Oh my god, he is so cute," the red fox whispered. But the real surprise was when he stopped in front of them and looked straight at Lisa. "Um hi, your Lisa right?", the large canine asked rubbing his paw over the back of his neck. "Yeah, I'm Lisa." She answered, quickly looking over at her equally dumbstruck friend. "Well, I saw your name on the list of student tutors." Ryan shifted his gaze when he realised that he was staring and continued, "And I was hoping you could help me out." Ryan looked back to her for an answer, only to see Lisa staring at him. Amy came to her rescue by kicking her ankle. "OUCH! YES!"she shouted, surprised by the sudden kick. "Okay, thanks." The bell rang, sending the students to their classes. Ryan and Lisa grumbled at the interruption. "I'll see you later than." Ryan continued with a smile

It wasn't long after that meeting the two began dating. But after her father saw that picture she drew last week, it became harder to see him. It was a nude picture of Ryan she had drew. Lisa caught him in the shower after a late practice. A smile crept across her face as she recalled the startled look on his face when he stepped out of the shower in only a towel. "What are you doing here?" He couldn't believe that she was standing right in front of him. Lisa looked up at his face and back down at the towel. "Let me see it Ryan." His jaw dropped and he began to fumble the towel in his paws." He looked up at her, "may be this isn't such a good idea." His sentence was interrupted when Lisa pulled her halter top off and threw it at him. Ryan's hands instinctively snapped his paws up, catching the small white garment. The unattended towel fell to the ground followed by the shirt. "Wow! Ryan you've been holding out on me." Ryan shifted his feet as he watched Lisa stare at his crotch. His member was still its sheath and his furry orbs swayed beneth, but he liked that Lisa was impressed. Lisa looked up at Ryan and began to open her sketchbook," Let me draw you Ryan." Ryan didn't know what to say, his jaw just hung open as he tried to come up with a response. "Maybe if I could see ... the rest of you Lisa. I could relax a little." Lisa giggled at the request and removed her silk bra tossing it on the growing pile at Ryan's feet, her inner ears began to redden when she saw the tip of Ryan's member began to poke out of his sheath. Lisa turned around, bending over slightly, and hooked her shorts and panties with her thumbs pulling them down to her knees. Lisa looked over her should at Ryan. One of his paws moved down to his shaft and he began to lightly rub it, coaxing it futher from his sheath, and nodded for her to continue. She smiled and winked seductivly and finished removing the rest of her garments, leaving only the tip of her fluffy tail to cover her most delicate spot. Ryan whimpered as Lisa began to turn in a slow circle, pulling the tip of her tail away from herself, wagging it slowly as she turned back to face him. "So can I draw you Ryan?" Ryan was transfixed by the soft fur that parted at her nether lips, an intoxicating smell began to wash over him. His member stuck out a full 12 inches and he began to walk over to her. But Lisa just shook her head, "If you you let me draw you, I'll take... care of you." Ryan whimpered and looked at her with pleading eyes. He just wanted to pick up the small shewolf and mate with her right there. But she had a determined smile on her face, this shewolf was going to get what she wanted first, not after. "Okay Lisa." He stepped back to the wall, his arms over his head, paws resting on the back of his head.

Lisa was brought out of her daydream when her backpack was pulled out from under her hand. She opened her eyes to see a wide-eyed feral wolf cub, with her backpack in his mouth, standing only two feet in front of her. A surge of panic went up her spine as the the cub turned to run with her bag. "No! My phone," Lisa shouted leaping at the cub before he could get to far. But her closing paws only found soft pup fur that pulled free from the little thief. Lisa was now sprawled forward, her face in the dirt with only two pawfulls of fluff to reward her. The feral wolf cub turned to run with his prize, not wasting anytime that the failed attack had given him. "Ha!" Artem laughed to himself, " Any pup knows that you can't bite the fluffy stuff!" But Artems victory was short lived as he tripped over the backpack. The unnatural object was not stiff like the bones and sticks he was used to playing with and had folded over itself as the pup turned to run. Lisa lurched forward and managed to grab the straps on the bag before Artem could recover. Lisa tried to stand, but Artem's paws found the earth first and he pulled as hard as muslces allowed him to. This sent Lisa's muzzle straight into the hard dirt. Her eyes began to water as she felt the world spin around her. The fact that a cub had such strength is what truly stunned Lisa. But she managed to wrap her paw around the strap as the cub resumed the tug a war. Lisa looked up at the snarling cub and meet his gaze, his eyes was dark green and shone with a desperation that she had never seen before. Lisa than tasted a trickle of blood coming from her nose. "Well, lets see how you like this trick." Lisa said aloud as she pulled as hard as she could on her bag and than quickly released, hoping to send the cub flying backward. Artem was more than ready for this trick, and he also had a trick of his own. Luba, the youngest of the cubs, was the first to discover this feat and used it alot while at play. Artem recalled her soft silver fur that was spackled with a rusty brown color. She was the toughest of the cubs, though Artem would never tell her that. Luba had sent Artem tail over ears several times while playing with the old bones that was scattered around the den, much to the enjoyment of the other cubs, before he devised his counter. When he felt the tell tail sign of the sudden pull Artem lept at his sister knocking her off balance and tackling her in the same move. But, instead of grappling his sister Artem realized that he just leapt into the arms of the surprised shewolf. "Oh no", Lisa had barely time to think, let alone react as the cub came flying at her instead of away from her. She quickly let go of her backpack as the cub landed on her. Not wanting to pull more fur from the cub Lisa instead tried to wrap her arms around the wriggling pup. Which, as Lisa would soon find out, is the last thing you should do when encountering a wild animal. Panic gripped Artem and he bit down hard on the shewolf's arm as she tried to trap him. Lisa howled with pain as fangs sliced into her arm, causing her to release the tiny ball of fury that was now on her chest. Lisa threw her arms over head trying to hide her face and throat from any further attacks the feral wolf might unleash. Instead of continuing a risky attack on the shewolf that was more twice his size Artem decided to make a run for it. Slowing only long enough to grab the bag that held his prize. Gripping the pack at the center Artem's jaw found Lisa's cell phone that was inside and gripped it tightly as he continued his escape. The small pup ran up the ridge that he was watching her from earlier, and was about to clear a log at the top, when a hard vibration gripped is jaw. The cell phone had sprang to life. "A bee!?" Artem yelped and let the bag lose sending him off balance and into the rotten log instead of over it.

Lisa could only watch as the cub ran way into the forest with the backpack that held her cellphone. "No", Lisa whimpered holding her throbbing arm that was bleeding heavily. "What if I didn't read the map right? I could be lost." But the cub missed the last jump and tumbled back down the ridge, with the massive log that he failed to clear rolling after him. A load crash and painful yelp was the only sounds Lisa heard as she saw the log land on the cub. After a few moments trying to absorb what had happened Lisa heard strained cries coming from under the log. Forgetting her own pain Lisa rushed to the log to see the pup that had fought her so bravely. She was afraid of what may be under the log. But she knew she had to do something to help. To her relief the log had only pinned the cubs left hind leg instead of crushing him completely. Artem craned his neck to see the tamed shewolf looking down at him. He immediatly tried to run but only felt a sharp pain in his trapped leg. As darkness came in around him and the pain in his leg throbbed Artem had just enough strength to sing the lullaby that he heard his mother sang the night he last saw his family alive.
