The Crash

The gray minivan was speeding down the road in a heavy thunderstorm the driver not caring about the danger in his rush to get away from his past, the funeral still fresh in his memory. The black casket was still floating in front of his eyes despite being buried in the ground for almost a month. He was tired of waking up everyday and everywhere he looked seeing another reminder of what he'd lost, tired of everyone telling him it would get better with time, that the pain would fade. Three days ago he'd decided he'd had enough. Grabbing a bunch of clothes, his desktop computer, his DVD collection and piling it in his van he'd taken off stopping by his bank to empty his accounts not even giving a slight glance back.

Now here he was Halfway across the country and still running the pain somehow getting worse with more distance gained. It didn't matter as long as he kept going, kept running. He was on some back roads somewhere in northern Missouri on a highway marked 169 heading in a generally northeastern direction. He didn't really care where the roads went as long as they went away from his past. He had just passed over the Platte River and a small creek and was going through a couple curves pressing 80mph when it happened. Time seemed to slow down as three lightning bolts struck the same spots on the road in front of him. The electricity from the lightning bolts arced across the road leaving a strange shimmering in the air right above the road. Having no way of stopping he just kept going not even slowing down passing through it finding himself in a heavy blizzard. The sudden change in weather startled him causing him to jerk the wheel and slam on the brakes right as he was going into a curve. But as he was traveling on a solid sheet of ice the only thing that happened was the wheels locked up and he skidded completely out of control. The last thing he saw was a large snow bank that he was heading for before everything went black.
