#9 of Mystery Savior

I awoke the next morning hurting a bit more then yesterday, but a lot less then Saturday. I imagine that having to move around all day made it hurt worse. Even so, I was still able to go to school.

I looked at myself in the mirror to know what other people would be seeing when they saw me. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought it was. It mostly looked like I had gotten dark patches on my fur. The only thing that would be impossible to confuse is my black eye. It seemed to have gotten darker over the weekend. I gingerly touched it, and it hurt a bit worse then the rest of the body, probably because it isn't a part of my body that I move that often.

Before I went to school, I made sure to pass by a convenient store on the way to buy a lanyard for my home key. That way if this ever happens again, heaven forbid, then I won't be slowed down by having to reach in my backpack for the key. The cashier gave me a look of pity while he rang me up, but he didn't say anything.

The first thing that I had planned to do as soon as I got to school was go to Mr. Aktaion's office to ask if I could get some more time on my project. I made sure to bring the destroyed project with me, so I could prove that I had actually been working on it. I wanted as much leverage in my favor as I could have while asking my biology teacher for a favor. He is very strict whenever it comes to due dates; I don't even think that I've heard of him letting an assignment be turned in 10 minutes after he had called for the class to turn it in.

I was rehearsing the speech that I was planning to give him when I suddenly ran into someone. Unfortunately, with my bruises, it felt like running into a brick wall.

"Sorry about that," said a familiar voice.

I looked up, and saw that it was Rendall who I had ran into. I blushed so violently that, combined with the bruises; I imagined that I looked like my fur had been dipped in food coloring. "I-it's ok," I stuttered 'God, Beowulf! Pull yourself together,' I mentally scolded. "I actually wasn't paying attention to where I was going."

He helped me up, and then thoroughly looked me over. "Yikes! That must hurt," he said, pointing to my shiner.

"Only when it's touched," I said in what I hope was a nonchalant tone.

"I was actually just thinking about you," Rendall said.

"Really? What about?' I asked, trying to both keep over excitement out of my voice and dealing with my heart skipping a beat at the same time.

"Well, what do you plan to do about those guys who had beaten you up? Are you going to the principal about it?" he asked.

I sighed deeply. "What's the use?" I asked "Telling the principal will only make them even angrier at me, which will only cause more violence. Besides, I didn't get a chance to see who they were. They punched me in both eyes so that the only thing I could see were stars."

"I saw them," said Rendall with a slight growl in his tone. "It was Loki, Fenris, and Enyo."

I groaned. Of course, out of all of the people that would have done it, it had to be those three. Loki was the quarterback of our football team. He fit the exact stereotype of a jock perfectly; athletic, fowl-tempered, and dumber than the movie Napoleon Dynamite. Loki's only just smart enough to be the leader, but he doesn't have anything on both Fenris and Enyo when it comes to size. They're roughly the size of mountains on steriods.

"Even more of a reason to not tell the principal," I said. "They'll just make my life even more of a living hell."

"You've got to tell someone about it!" exclaimed Rendall. "Those bastards can not get away for what they did."

"Look!" I shouted, suddenly angry. "Even if those jerks are put on suspension, or even sent to some detention facility where they undoubtedly belong, there are still hundreds of other guys who will be willing to take their place!"

I immediately regretted blowing up on him. Rendall stared at me, shocked. "I'm sorry, I'm just a little stressed. This is the first time that I've ever been beat up."

"No, you're right," he said. "Honestly, you were lucky last time. I'm just glad that I was there to help you."

"Why were you there, anyways?" I asked. I remembered that he had never really answered the question when my mom had asked him.

Sure enough, the same look that he had when my mom asked it appeared on his face again. "I've got to go. I'm late for wrestling practice."

As I watched him walk away, I started wondering to myself, 'Do we even have a wrestling team?' I sighed, wondering if I would ever get a straight answer out of him. What could it possibly that he was hiding? Is he some kind of superhero or something? I mentally made a note to ask the principal about the wrestling team. I still have to talk to Mr. Aktaion.
