I looked around and noticed that whoever had been beating me up had completely disappeared. I looked up at my savior again. "Thank you," I mumbled. I tried to rack my brain to try to remember his name, but I couldn't think of it to save my life.

Probably thinking that my confusion is even worse then it was, he said "I'm Rendall. We have gym together. I asked you if you needed help carrying your unfinished project home."

At the mention of my project, my mind started working again. 'Crap! My project! Where'd it go?' I thought to myself. I sat up and tried to look around, but stars started popping in front of my eyes, and I started feeling nauseous. I took a deep breath to prevent myself from hurling in front of this incredibly cute wolf, whose eyes were now on me with a worried look in them. They were an electric blue that made me think of a warm day on the beach.

I couldn't help but smile while looking into those eyes. I was probably staring at them for about half a minute before I realized that I was doing it. I tried to hide my blush, but I'm not sure how well I did. I suddenly remembered what I was doing before I got lost in his eyes, and asked him, "You haven't seen my project, have you?"

The worry on his face turned to sorrow. "I did see it. Well, what's left of it." His frown deepened, and he reached for something from behind him. What he pulled towards me was my diorama of the DNA of a certain species, only it looked like it had been dropped and stepped on several times.

"Fudge!" I exclaimed. "There's no way that I'll be able to redo this project by when it's due!"

I looked over and noticed that Rendall was chuckling.

"What's so funny?" I asked furiously.

"Sorry, I've just never heard anyone use the word 'fudge' as a replacement for a cuss word."

"Well, if you haven't figured it out by now, I'm not exactly normal," I said, torn between being mad at him and amused.

"Come on," Rendall said. "Let's get you to your house."

"I don't think that I would be able to make it." I said. I felt the beginning of several bruises, and what I'm going to guess will soon be a black eye. It was hurting me just to move my head.

"Here, I'll help you," said Rendall. He put my arm around his shoulder and helped me to my feet. "Which way do you live?"

I leaned on him while giving directions to my house; I could feel heat emanating from him, which was somehow comforting, even though fall had just barely begun. I could also tell that he had very broad shoulders, because my arm barely reached to the other side of his shoulder. In what seemed like moments, we were at my house.

He unlocked and opened the door for me, then led me to the couch. I suddenly felt glad that I had decided to start doing my chores before I went to school; I remember that the house was an utter disaster this morning.

"Where's your kitchen?" Rendall asked, looking around. Confused, I pointed towards the kitchen. Before I could ask him what he was getting, he disappeared behind the wall that separates the kitchen and the living room. After a few minutes, he came back with a washcloth that looked like it had been covered in ice.

"Here," he said, gingerly placing the washcloth on my eye. "Hold that there." I did as he said, and for a while, we sat there in quiet.

"Would you like anything for a snack?" I asked him. I hadn't had lunch, but I was in no mood to eat anything.

He smiled, and replied, "Not if you're planning on getting it."

At that moment, my mom arrived home from work. As soon as she walked in the door, she took one look at me and dropped her purse.

"Oh hunny, what happened to you?" She said while running straight towards me.

"A couple of guys from the football team started to beat me up." I said. "It was at least three against one. I would still probably be lying down there if it weren't for Rendall." I waved my hand towards him.

My mom suddenly noticed that there was another guy in the room. She then ran straight over to him and hugged him tightly. "Oh, thank you so much!" she said, on what sounded like the verge of tears. "I don't even want to think about what would have happened if you weren't there."

I rolled my eyes at my mom's theatrics. I can usually go toe to toe with her whenever it comes to melodrama, but when it comes to another guy that I liked, than it was a bit embarrassing.

The theatrics made me realize something. "Why were you there?" It wasn't like I wasn't grateful, it's just that usually on my walk home, I never ran into anyone.

His face suddenly took on an emotion that I couldn't exactly read. "I just happened to be at the right place at the right time." I noticed that he didn't look at me whenever he said that.

As quickly as the emotion had gone on his face, it had disappeared. Then, he said, "I'm sorry, but I've got to go. My dad will be expecting me home soon, and I don't want to be late."

"Wait," my mom said. "At least take these home made cookies as a thank you gift." She produced a plastic plate full of cookies that seemed to big for the purse that they were in.

Rendall took them, and said, "Thank you," then went on his way.

That night, I dreamt of a tall, cute, muscular wolf saving me from countless dangers. After all the dangers had passed, the wolf took me in his arms and we kissed. Despite waking up from the pain every time I moved, it was the best night sleep that I could ever remember getting.
