#9 of Tales of Azoria

Captured from an unknown ruler that took over an entire kingdom. Azuri finds himself being unaffected by the mind controller. He luckily escapes and now needs to find a way to free his friend, which in return allows him to meet another dragon along the way. Although, he finds out that she's a bit of an aggressive dragon with an urge to kill.

Azuri found himself behind bars of a very rusty and run down prison. From what he remembered when they took him there, it appeared to be in the far back of the palace, possibly underground. There were no windows looking in or out, so he was left with just small lanterns hanging off the ceiling above. It was the only form of light that allowed him to see his surroundings. He was chained up to the wall with very rusty chains that were beginning to have moss growing on them. Apparently the guards didn't care about it as they just left him there.

Azuri tried using his teeth to pull apart the chains or cut them in half. Though, he remembered how dull his teeth were and that they couldn't cut through anything too thick. As he tugged on them, he felt one of his teeth crack a little, instantly wincing and whining as he pulled away, Raising his claw up to his mouth and holding it in gently as he cried out in pain. That was a stupid idea. He thought to himself with slight irritation. Azuri was about to use his venom, when the door of the cellar opened up and revealed the dark silhouette of Boss Biss.

He walked over to the cell and looked down toward Azuri with a menacing grin. "Well well, little Florian now stuck in a cell with no escape. I wonder what he might be thinking. . ." It seemed like he was mocking him now. Azuri's eyebrows curved inward in rage as he stared up at him.

"What do you want with me? Why am I here? I didn't do anything to you!" Boss Biss chuckled under his breath, still with the creepy grin.

"You possess something that interests me, I've told you this before." He goes over to the cell door and unlocks it, before opening it and walking inside. He was pure meters away from Azuri, still a tower of height compared to him. "I want to understand why I can't see through your mind."

"I don't even understand what you are talking about! Let me go! I'll leave and never come back!"

Boss Biss shook his head and chuckled darkly again.

"I'm afraid I can't, and even if I wanted to, you'd come back for him." His head turned toward the cell door, where Azuri noticed a familiar glow. That's when he recognized the familiar face and outline of Uhrwerk, with a blank expression on his face. "Now that would be troublesome for someone who I can't control trying to warn other tribes. That would uncover my entire plan." He said as he let Uhrwerk walk up beside him. His expression was still blank, and was staring straight into Azuri's eyes. He didn't seem to say anything either, but Azuri knew something was wrong.

"Wh-what did you do to him? Release him!" Azuri cried out, standing up on all fours and trying to get over to Uhrwerk. Unfortunately he couldn't reach Uhrwerk as the chains stopped him from getting any closer. "Release him now! He doesn't deserve this!"

Boss Biss chuckled down at Azuri, watching him squirm and struggle to free himself from the chains. He then turned toward Uhrwerk with a menacing smile. "You can go now, I think he's got the point." Uhrwerk glanced at him, then Azuri before heading out the cell door. Once Azuri and BossBiss's eyes met, Azuri could still feel his eyes penetrating his soul. The red glowing illuminating from them made Azuri shiver down his spine. "Enjoy your stay young one, because I'm going to have lots of fun fighting you out later."

"Not if I do this!" The venom was throwing through his teeth and tongue as he spit out venom from his mouth. It landed onto BossBiss's cheek, but it only sizzled out and did nothing to his scales. Azuri's eyes widened at the sight. Why didn't it work? No dragon was immune to Florian venom. BossBiss's expression faded to disappointment as he raised a claw up to his cheek and wiped off the spit.

"Nice. . ." He says to himself with an unimpressed expression, then starts to walk out of the cell. "I'll be back for you later, runt. Don't do anything stupid, you hear?" Azuri couldn't promise that at this point. Seeing Uhrwerk, sucha young dragon like himself who had no family, be controlled by another dragon... That made Azuri growl in anger as his eyes met with the chains wrapped around his claws. Then he heard a clang from the cell walls, and saw a Stellarian dragon coming over with a tray of food. They slid it over to him on the floor, then walked out. Possibly going to return to him to give it back. Which means, he needs to hurry and escape while he had the chance.

He looked down at the chains and wrapped his mouth around it. He started pouring the venom onto the metal and let it burn through it. He listened to it sizzle, then he heard it cling off and fall to the floor. He started doing the same to the rest of the chains, until he was completely free. Unfortunately the cuffs were still wrapped around his wrists, but Azuri didn't mind because he was free to move around now. He cloaked himself invisible and stood beside the cell door, waiting patiently for the guard to return.

Several minutes passed before they returned and gasped in terror. Instead of calling out for backup, he rushes over and unlocks the cell door, stepping inside. He begins to examine the cell for clues of Azuri. He got behind the guard and grabbed their head, slamming the side of his neck and head against the bars. This caused the guard to get knocked out completely and fall to the floor unconscious. He looked down at him in guilt and whispered out loud, "S-sorry. . . You'll forgive me later." Azuri started checking on them and found keys beneath his wings. Once he took them and walked out of the cell, he quietly left the cellar while still cloaked invisible.

  1. He found himself in another hallway that had multiple other rooms with cells in them. He quietly and slowly walked down the hallway, peeping through some of the rooms and finding empty rooms. This place should be filled to the brim with prisoners, what happened to them? Then, Azuri heard two guards coming closer to him from around the corner on his left. He stood completely still and waited patiently, slowing his breathing. Another two Stellarian guards had turned down his hallway, mid-conversation with each other. He slid over to the side in complete silence as he watched them walk past him. Once they were several meters away, he began running down the hallway

He turned down the corner where the guards came from, finding a spiral staircase leading up and out of the cellar. He slid up the stairs cautiously before coming to the doorway that led into the cellar. He opened it up and stepped through, finding himself inside a large open room with pillars along the middle of the room. This didn't appear to be the throne room because there was no red carpet, throne, or guards inside it. Azuri was confused about where he was now. He didn't know the layout of the palace by memory, so there was a chance he could get lost. The size of the palace surely didn't help that fact either.

What Azuri did find was a pair of menacing stone statues at the end of the room where the escape was supposed to be. Azuri kind of felt like he was in the opposite of a throne room, but what would that be called? He didn't know, and clearly didn't care anymore. Boss Biss did something to Uhrwerk and was keeping him somewhere, possibly close by. He needed to find him and find a way to stop the effects of whatever Uhrwerk was under. He hoped the poor Luminian was okay. Azuri could tell just from Uhrwerk's expressions that he had nobody else. He felt guilty for leaving him alone in the dining room, he wouldn't have been discovered by BossBiss and controlled with no escape. Damnit Azuri, he heard his mom tell him in his thoughts, you know better than to be trusting a Luminian.

Shut up mom. He replied to her in his thoughts. You'll see that he's not as bad as you think he is. Azuri searched the room until he found a doorway leading to another part of the palace. He flew over to it and discovered that it was another flight of stairs. Feeling a little relieved that this would finally take him to Uhrwerk, he started heading up the stairs while cloaked completely invisible until he got to a door that led to the large theater room. He was on the first floor, now he just needed to find Uhrwerk and take him with him.

Azuri walked through the large doorway that led out to a garden of flowers. He saw the view of the ocean ahead and the field reaching close to the shore. Dragons of various species were going through the grass and checking the plants. As he examined his surroundings, he eventually found Uhrwerk running through the garden with a happy grin. He appeared to be with two other unfamiliar dragons that Azuri didn't know. Okay, I think this BossBiss guy is either messing with me, or this is a dream.

That didn't look like the Uhrwerk he knew yesterday or earlier that day. It was like he lost all memories of what happened and was now living the happiest day of his life. What the heck is going on around here? He thought to himself.

Azuri looked around for any sign of BossBiss, before running toward Uhrwerk and the two other dragons. Once he got close enough to them, he pulled Uhrwerk with him to the side and uncloaked himself. "Uhrwerk! What are you doing?!"

He didn't react in a frightened state, instead he was panicking. "Let me go! I don't even know who you are!" This caught Azuri off guard, but he tried to use his claws to stop his flailing. The two other dragons approach them both with curiosity and concern.

"Hey!" One of them shouted, "Let him go! He doesn't know you, freak!" They tried to push and pull Azuri off of them, but he refused to let go of Uhrwerk.

"What has gotten into you?!" Azuri cried out as he used a lot of force to pull Uhrwerk away from the other two dragons. He noticed that dragons around them stopped what they were doing to watch the scene. "What in all of Lanta did BossBiss do to you?"

Uhrwerk shook his head and continued fighting Azuri's grasp. "What are you talking about? I've always been like this, I don't know who you are!" He cried out again. "Help! He won't let me go!"

"Arg! Gosh dang it." Azuri nearly cursed under his breath as he watched dragons begin approaching them. Azuri had to finally let go of Uhrwerk, which he stepped several meters away from Azuri.

"What is going on here?" One of the dragons asked in concern.

"I don't know! I don't even know this dragon, he just started pulling me away from my friends and saying weird stuff." The dragon looked over to Azuri with a face that said, "Is that true?" Azuri couldn't speak anymore. First BossBiss was talking about not being able to get into his head, the next is Uhrwerk acting strange. He wasn't this talkative when they got here, was he? No. Azuri told himself in his head. I think this must be some kind of mind control he's pulling. That explains why things are so strange all of a sudden. The reason he's acting weird and why BossBiss said the things that he said earlier.

But how? He asked himself. No dragon in history has been able to mind control their victims. But if that's really the case, then why couldn't he control Azuri? Was he immune to him? Thoughts started rushing through his head as he tried to comprehend the reality he found himself in. Things were moving too fast for him to recognize if the reality he knew before was real, or if he was living in the reality now. But why could he remember Uhrwerk and his mom and the fact he and Uhrwerk came here? Uhrwerk was saying that he couldn't, but Azuri could. What is BossBiss doing to Uhrwerk and these poor dragons that they don't realize is happening?

Azuri noticed himself staring at Uhrwerk's worried expression. Then he started looking at the rest of the dragons that were not crowding around them. If Uhrwerk is being mind controlled, maybe there is some way to free him. The problem is, I can't do it right now while everyone is looking. Azuri cloaks his entire body to vanish from the crowd and begin running away from the scene as fast as he could. The other dragons made awe noises at the sight of Azuri vanishing. Some of them attempt to search around for Azuri, mumbling to themselves in annoyance.

Azuri rushed back to the palace and walked inside before turning around and looking back to Uhrwerk. He watched as Uhrwerk joined back to the other two dragons and began talking to them. Then, they returned back to what they were doing before Azuri interrupted them. Just watching Uhrwerk run around with them with the happiest expression made Azuri feel conflicted. He looks happy, but I know deep down that he still isn't. This is all fake laughter and happiness. Azuri thinks to himself as he watches. If I wanted to free him and get him out of here, what would be the best way of doing that?

That's when he thought of an idea that might work. He should try to get Uhrwerk asleep and take him away. Though, how would he manage to take such a large winged dragon? He's probably twice the weight of Azuri, which means he wouldn't be able to carry him. Azuri knew the herb that made dragons fall asleep when putting it under their noses. He could get one right now if he really wanted to, but the plan of getting him out of here without being seen is expected to fall apart quickly, especially with so many dragons nearby watching the surroundings.

Azuri then thought of another herb that theoretically could suppress the mind control. The herb usually only suppresses things like anxiety or fear, but it could work for mind control too because of the way it interferes with the mind. Florians call it the, "Californian drug." Azuri kind of chuckled at that name because he didn't understand what it meant or how they made that name. Regardless, Azuri felt like the drug was the best possible option for him without dragging Uhrwerk out of there. The only question was, what is the closest place to get one?

Azuri knew that this place didn't have any, despite the gorgeous garden. Since he couldn't find any nearby, it looked like he was going to have to find some from a nearby forest. He uses his wings to lift himself off the ground and into the air, flying off from the palace and away from the ocean and heading south. It didn't take him long to find a forest that might be suitable for the herb. He scouts around the forest with his head fully facing toward the ground. He wasn't looking where he was going as he was too focused on finding the herb in his mind.

That's when he bumped into another dragon that appeared to be a bright yellow scaled dragon. He uncloaked and looked up at the dragon in front of him. They appeared to be as young as him based on their size. Azuri rubbed his head and regained control of his wings. When Azuri closely examined the dragon in front of him, he realized that it was a female Vaermesian dragon. She rubbed her forehead as she looked into Azuri's eyes. "Oh! Sorry about that! I didn't see you there, literally." She appeared to be carrying something in one of her claws that Azuri couldn't see easily. She hid it behind one of her wings as her eyes met with Azuri's.

"I'm sorry as well, I got distracted from flying." Azuri looked back down to the trees below, but still couldn't find any clear indications of the herb anymore.

"Distracted from what? What are you looking at?" Azuri wondered if he should tell her. Maybe she could help him find what he was looking for. Though, she might ask why he needs it. If he tells her, she might think he's insane. Should he tell her? Or would that be a mistake? At the same time though, Azuri needed help from any dragon that hasn't been controlled by BossBiss yet. This might help relieve the tension he just went through.

"Do you know where I can find the Californian drug? I need it for uh. . ." Should he think of an excuse? What should he even tell her? Before he could find an excuse, she surprisingly blurted out without waiting for him to finish.

"Oh! I know, we have plenty back at my place, though I was just about to head toward Stellaris to see what all the fuss is about." Oh shit, that's not good. Another victim falling into the trap. I need to tell her now.

"I wouldn't recommend going there if I was you, at least not at this moment."

Her expression grew confused.

"What do you mean? What's happening?"

Azuri turned around and started looking back toward the direction of Stellaris. He could see it just upon his horizon with a menacing red aurora around it. When he turned back to her, he sighed deeply.

"Tell me where the Californian drug is, and I'll explain it to you on the way." Her face lit up a bit as she nodded to him. Turning around and starting to fly back to the desert up ahead, Azuri quickly flew up right beside her, beginning to explain to her about the chaos that he just went through. Her expression showed fear and a bit of amazement. It was crazy to think a dragon would think the experience was amazing, but he didn't let it bother him. As they flew toward the desert, he saw the kingdom of Vaermia. Unlike the Fuegolis palace, this one didn't have a tall and large palace. Instead, it just looked like a giant city from up above. No particular towers or military buildings that he could see.

At first, he wondered if this was even the place until the Vaermesian dragon started diving down toward a clearing in the street. Azuri followed her and landed beside her, looking around at other Vaermesians who were minding their own business. She looked around for a second, before gesturing for Azuri to follow her. He did so, despite being a little hesitant now. She led him to a building that was laid up against the city's walls. It had a doorway with no door and only curtains that could be pulled in to block the sunlight. Azuri felt like he was in one of those older medieval villages. When he walked inside, he was met with the smell of perfume from across the room.

"Mom, we have a visitor!" The Vaermesian called out, but they heard no reply. She turned to Azuri. "You can just sit there on the couch while I grab mom's drug."

"She takes drugs?" Azuri asked in slight surprise.

"Yeaah, she's a bit addicted. She always says that it's to die down the guilt she has from her past." Azuri actually felt this way too close to home. Azuri's father used to be addicted to the Californian drug too, though for some reason his mom never told him to stop or anything like that. He usually did it away from the house and Azuri, he always said it was so he, "Wasn't being a terrible father." Azuri kind of felt like if any dragon at all was taking it, they were bad influences. Particularly since his father was only with him for two years before leaving, he didn't really get the chance to see him high on it. If he did, they would be very faded in his memory.

Azuri sat down on the couch and waited for the Vaermesian to grab the drug from her mother. He looked around the room at the lack of decor. The only decor in the room was a small wooden sculpture of a dragon sitting on the kitchen counter. Azuri couldn't tell what dragon it was, but he figured it must've been another Vaermesian. The Vaermesian dragon returned with a small baggie with little pieces of herb inside. Azuri recognized it immediately, and took it from her with a smile. "Thank you!" He was about to walk out and leave, when he felt her claw grab his leg.

"Wait, I want to come with you." Azuri turned to her in confusion.

"Really? Even after what I just told you?" She nodded her head, still a large smile on her face. "But why? It's dangerous to go there."

"Then, why are you going back there?" Azuri felt a little ashamed at leaving Uhrwerk back at the palace. He felt even more guilty deciding to use a drug to release him from mind control. He had no other options to go with though, this was the only way. What else was he supposed to do? Force him to listen to Azuri and try to get him to remember his memories? He was pretty sure BossBiss wouldn't make it that easy to release him.

"Like I told you before, I'm taking the herb to my friend to free him from BossBiss's mind control."

"That's not what I meant." She said, "Why are you deciding to go back there despite the danger? Why should it be different for me? Wouldn't it be better to take someone else with you just in case?" Azuri thought to himself for a second about what she said. Is it better to be alone in a dangerous situation? Or was it better to have another dragon there with you? It was a good question because Azuri didn't know how to respond to her. He opened his mouth to say something, but only closed it shortly afterwards when he couldn't speak. "If you have no answer to that, then I'm coming with you," she quickly turned around and started searching through multiple cabinets, "and I've got just the thing to sneak in without being seen."

Azuri watched her dig through piles of things, before eventually pulling out a bracelet. Azuri was confused at the sight of the bracelet. "A bracelet? What is that for?" She chuckled to herself as she put the bracelet over her wrist and instantly turned invisible with no sign of where she went. "Woah!" Azuri turned to his thermal vision, and saw the Vaermesian's heat radiating in front of him. "That's so cool!" Azuri said in awe.

She took the bracelet off, letting Azuri flip back to his regular vision. "I found this at a shop that was selling it for a pretty expensive price. When I asked them why it was so expensive, they said it had magical properties." She handed it over to Azuri to examine it closer. "Even though I was saving up my coins for a better education downtown, I wanted to get it and try it out. Ever since I found out that it could do this, I've been dying to test it." Azuri handed it back to her.

"I'm assuming that's your true reason you wanted to come with me?"

She shook her head. "Actually, I have a lot of reasons to go with you. Though, it would take me about three scrolls to write them all down." Azuri couldn't help but laugh. For some reason, she was very amusing to talk to. Though, only because of her very charming personality illuminating off of her words. She took the bracelet and placed it beneath her wings and then walked over to her bedroom that was nearby her mothers. When she came back, she was carrying a sword in her other claw. "Might as well take this too."

"A sword? What do you need that for?" She rolled her eyes as she put it behind her wings to hold them.

"To protect us? I've killed dragons before, I can protect you from anybody who dares try to kill us." Azuri was shocked by this. She killed dragons? Who in the world trains their daughter to kill? He thought to himself in shock. She looks about the same age as him too, which surprised him even more. He couldn't tell if the parents were in the wrong or if she always wanted to know how to fight for herself. Though, he could tell that Sandstorm was overly hyped about openly admitting to herself about killing other dragons. In a way, it was slightly concerning.

"You're going to have to explain yourself about what that means, because I don't believe you killed anybody before." She just chuckled at him with a very delighted smile. It kind of gave Azuri chills just looking at her face. He kind of wanted to know more about her, but at the same time he was a bit nervous to ask. Could she just be making that up to comfort him? Not that it was comforting to know that a literal eight year old dragon was willing to stab someone to death. He wondered how much more evil she would get by the time she turned twenty. "Before we go, may I ask for your name?" Azuri asks her.

"My name is Sandstorm." She said with a delighted smile.

"Nice to meet you, let's get going to the Stellaris palace before they do something horrible to my friend." She stops him with a claw. "I think you should first take those off." She pointed down to the cuffs wrapped around his claws. "Don't worry, I got something for that."

"Did I seriously cloak myself with these still on?" She laughed as she went over to the cabinets and pulled out bobby pins. "You should be lucky that nobody caught onto it, otherwise they'd be following you." Oh shoot, what if I was being followed? It took a few minutes for her to unlock them and take them off. "There you go, completely free now." She then started to imitate a guard with a deep voice. "I hope you learned your lesson, you little wanker!" She giggled shortly afterwards before putting the bobby pins away. Azuri chuckled as he rubbed his wrists where the cuffs were.

"Alright, I think we should go now." She nodded before putting the sword in one claw, then wrapping the bracelet in the other. She went invisible, which made Azuri turn to his thermal vision. They eventually left the house and started flying off toward Stellaris palace. Don't worry Uhrwerk, I'm coming to save you, I just need you to wait a little bit longer.
