#2 of Animalands Lore

Back story about two of the Guardian Tails supporting characters.

There are millions of anthros in this world, and they all walk a different road in life. Some raise a family and work steady jobs to keep them fed. Others broaden their horizons through traveling. I've seen and met many of these fine anthros and they had a lot of stories to share. Conversing with all these anthros is part of my job, you could say. I am a mercenary. I travel all over the West Continent and sell my services. Sometimes I go on hunts against feral creatures, other times I act as a bodyguard. I'm not too picky, selling my sword arm is how I make ends meet. My name is Paul. I'm a Leopard warrior, and I am at your service.

I live in the City of Phoenix, a capital city of Arizona Nation, but before that, my family and I used to live in the East Continent; Particularly in the continent of Africa. For a time I enjoyed living in the vast savannahs and learning to fight from my Father. As I got older, however, I grew bored of how peaceful it used to be. Just as when I was wanting some excitement in my life, we got warnings of a civil war happening Northeast. After keeping up with current events, we made the decision to move to the West Continent for safety. That's when I decided I was ready to live on my own. I was 24 years old when I left. After wandering the realm for two months, I found myself in Phoenix and grew fond of the beautiful statues depicting the majestic avion. That's when I decided to settle here.

Transitioning from a simple village to a large scale city was tough to adjust at first. The streets were packed with anthros walking among the crowd to their destination. I got lost frequently because of buildings looking similar to each other at first. The most aggravating is the occasional fights I get pulled into by rude thugs. Thanks to my Dad's training, I acted in self defense and taught those thugs a lesson. One day, a black panther named Tenebrae, who is a mercenary, saw one of my fights. I thought I was going to get in trouble, but thankfully he understood that I was just defending myself. What happened next surprised me.

I was taken to a barracks where the mercenaries gather for work, intel gathering, and to coordinate with the police since they work next door. That's where I met Tarrek Giordano, the Colonel. He and Tenebrae were impressed by the recent handling of those thugs and offered me a job as a mercenary. I was in need of a job, so I accepted their offer without a second thought. They gave me an official uniform, a weapon of my choice, a license, and start-up funds. It felt pretty good to have something fortunate happen after wandering for so long. Now I can finally settle down and put my training to good use.

For the next three months, I got hired frequently by the citizens. I slayed feral creatures in the outskirts of the city, I captured outlaws and bandits, and I settled arguments between bickering anthros. I've done such a good job that I grew a fanbase on the internet. It's pretty entertaining seeing my pictures edited into memes on social media. One that particularly caught my intrigue is when someone asked if I was interested in wrestling. They commented that I have a strong body that looked perfect for wrestling. After doing research on wrestling, I grew fascinated by the sport. I'm in a good spot to enjoy a hobby, so I decided to give it a try.

I started going to a gym, a facility for anthros to go in and sign up to use various equipment for exercise and muscle building. Tenebrae gave me some advice on what workouts I should do for building muscle and endurance. I'm already pretty strong thanks to my Father's training, but I am not opposed to building more muscle. From then on, I dedicated myself to a weight lifting routine and consumed more meat and carbs. This was much different than training in Africa, and I liked it. What could make this better is if I had someone to train with, but who?

(This is told from Benjamin's perspective.)

Before I worked for the mercenaries, I was a simple tiger. I have lived in Phoenix since I was a tiny cub. I love to eat, fight, and compete in wrestling. I'm Benjamin. I used to be a scrawny tiger until my Pa introduced me to the awesome world of wrestling. My Ma took me to watch one of his matches live in the stadium. He fought a large, hefty gorilla that loved to show off his strength. My Pa just laughed and fought him head on with great courage. They performed amazing grapples, attacks, and slammed each other to the floor. It lasted for a while until my Pa finally pinned the gorilla down.

That night, I practically praised him for his strength and begged him to sign me up for wrestling classes. I'll never forget both of their laughs and smiling faces. They encouraged me to wrestle as long as it was something that I wanted. I assured them that it is what I wanted, and I committed from middle school all the way to college. I worked hard, ate a lot, and built a strong burly body. I impressed a lot of men and women with my physique. In fact, I was given some modeling jobs to wear clothes and swimsuits for magazines. I didn't have too but the boost in self confidence is nice.

I'm 25 years old now and I've built a successful wrestling career. I got mostly second and third place in tournaments. Sometimes fourth, but I know one day that I will get first place. I am a strong tiger! I can't possibly not get first place! There is a tournament in Phoenix in two weeks, so I went to the gym to do some extra training. I did bicep curls, pull ups, squats, and bench presses. I want to get bigger, even if my belly gets rounder. After an hour of training, I let out a content sigh and wiped sweat off my brow. While I do that, I overhear a conversation behind me. A leopard and a wolf are talking about something that caught my ear.

"I'm looking forward to the wrestling tournament. It'll be my first time competing." Said the leopard.

My first thought was, "This guy is competing?" I remain still and listen to the leopard walking back to the locker room. I'm not normally a curious cat, but for some reason I couldn't get him out of my mind. After doing some stretching, I decided to go to the locker room and finish my work out for the day.

I go in and see the leopard undressing in front of his locker. His body looked pumped from working out and sweat dripped down his back and chest. For some reason, my heart was pounding hard, and my throat felt dry. I try to ignore it and walk up to him. I didn't understand why at the time, but I had an urge to speak to him. "Hey, leopard!"

I watch his ears twitch. He puts his gym bag down and turns towards me. "Can I help you?" He said in a calm tone.

"I heard you are joining the wrestling tournament in the city. Is that true?"

"Yes. It looked fun, so I signed up. I've been training for it these past few weeks."

I furrowed my eyebrows at him. If this guy is competing, then he is my rival! I decided to try and intimidate him. "You're small for a wrestler. I'm a wrestler, and I am large!" I growl and flex my arm muscles in front of him. He raised an eyebrow and stared at me. Then, to my surprise, he imitated me. He flexed his arms, matching my pose.

"Huh? You aren't scared?"

He shook his head. I let out a huff and do another flex on him, showing off my buff pecs. He mimicked that pose too. I was starting to get annoyed, so I did multiple flexes on him, showing off my triceps, my traps, my lats, my biceps again, and then my thighs. He imitated all of my poses! I stared at him and saw his bulging biceps while he stared at mine. I felt hot just watching him, so I let out an annoyed groan and ruffed my own hair. "What are we doing!? I'm so confused!"

The leopard laughs while putting a towel around his neck. "My apologies. I read that some guys in the locker rooms often show off their muscles to gauge each other's progress. I thought that's what we were doing.

"No it wasn't! I was scaring you! You're my rival!"

"A rival?" He crossed his arms while glancing at me from head to toe. "Ooooh I understand. Well, you didn't scare me, but you have an impressive body. I enjoyed the show."

I did not expect that from him. My eyes widen and I scratch my cheek. "Really? You liked it? I don't have a six pack like you though."

"Nothing wrong with having a big gut." He said while shrugging. "You still look impressive." I've gotten compliments from guys before, but his really made my cheeks red. Before I realized it, I took off my tank top in front of him, exposing my belly. He smiled and gave me a satisfied nod. "See? You are an astounding tiger with a strong body. I look forward to facing you in wrestling."

"Uhh. Y-you too! I'm Benjamin!"

"And I'm Paul. It's nice to meet you."

He offered a handshake, so I raised my paw and gave him a firm shake. After that, we left each other alone so we could get dressed and go home. This guy. I didn't want this to be the last time we talked before we wrestled, so I asked him if we could exchange contact info- and he said yes! That night, I couldn't stop thinking about him. His calm tone, his soft smile, his sexy body. I think I finally found a guy I really really like. I wonder if he feels the same way? I hope things work out between us.

(This is told from Paul's perspective.)

I sometimes think back to the day Benjamin and I first met and I can't help but laugh. I genuinely did think he wanted my opinion on his gains, so I gave him my honest judgment. What I didn't tell him was how cute he was. When he asked to exchange contact info, I was happy. We talked every day, sharing little things about each other and getting coffee before I went to work. When I told him I was a mercenary, he asked if he could be my partner. He is very strong, so his strength could be very helpful in protecting the city. Despite his simple mindedness, he proved to be a capable ally after two weeks of work.

As for the wrestling tournament we competed in, We never fought each other, but he did win the entire thing. We celebrated at the bar and even signed autographs for some of the bartenders. After that, we took a walk in the evening and stopped by one of the Phoenix statues. That was when Benjamin started to feel shy around me. I grew curious, so I had to ask. "Are you alright, Benjamin?"

"Paul. Umm... I think I won, because you inspired me."

"I did?"

"Yeah. You are so cool, you help me stay calm, and you are a great gym buddy. I..." He audibly gulped and hid his face behind his gold trophy. "I really like you."

I let out a gasp and my tail started to wag. I try to keep my composure by running my paw down my arm. "This is a surprise. Uhh..." Before I continued, he lowered his trophy and leaned towards me.

"I gotta know, Paul! How do you feel about me!?"

He stares at me with dilated eyes and biting his lips. I almost let out a chuckle, but if he heard that, he might take it the wrong way. So, I smiled and put my paw on his shoulder. "I think you are really cute, and I like you too. That day we met, I barely knew you and I still thought you were cute."

He continued to make me smile when he grinned from cheek to cheek. His tail was also wagging. "Paul!" He put his trophy down and gave me a tight hug. "Can we be mates, please? I love being with you, and I want to get closer with you!"

There was no way I could say no. I let out a soft laugh and hugged him back. "Nothing would make me happier."

He let me go, raised both his paws, and let out a cheer. Everyone started to stare at us, but I could hear them go, 'awe', so I wasn't too embarrassed. He stares back at me with a smile, so I get on my toes and kiss him on the cheek. He kisses me back before picking up his trophy. "May I walk you home?" He asked.

I nod and hold his hand. Although I lost the tournament, I felt like I won a prize of my own, Ben's heart. From here on out, we got a place together, worked as a mercenary duo, and trained together for wrestling tournaments- this time as a tag team.

That is how Benjamin and I got together. I was telling Tenebrae this the day before he left for Salvia village. He was curious about us for a while and I figured it was time I satisfy his curiosity. He said that this mission was going to have him gone for a few days. Guess we won't be hanging out for a while. Don't worry, Tenebrae. Benjamin and I will handle protecting the city while you're gone.

And that's our backstory.
